The mare drifted along, tugged by the evermoving underwater currents. The water here was endless, or at least as close as it got without actually seeing if it was, and colder than the underwater geysers that she spent much of her time swimming about or just resting in the warm jets. And she would have happily stayed there but for one thing. She lacked company. Skald was lonely, a fact she had finally managed to face.
She let out a stream of bubbles as she swam onwards, turning lazily and if she moved her head just a touch she could see the bubbles spiral away behind her. She rolled onto her back, and looked upwards, above her where she knew there was another world, a world she rarely bothered with. Curiosity tugged at her and swam now with a purpose, turning herself in the water and swimming upwards, up towards the surface.
When her head popped up she sniffed tentatively, tilting her head back so that she could look at the night sky. The air was crisp, the stars bright against the black and when she turned she saw a bright full moon. Skald let herself be pushed by the waves, looking around her as she did so. Listening also, at the slightest hint of danger she would vanish, diving back down into the depths.

Shaeran cut through the cool waters surrounding him easily; after all, this was the world that he had been born to. He loved the water and the environment that he called home; there was always something new to think about and to ponder, something new to discover if he dove deeper, swam farther. The only downside to the vastness of his home was that... well, running into neighbors was something of a miracle.
Thus, when he spotted the orange and black mare diving down towards his position, he startled and backpedaled a bit, unsure if he was truly seeing that which he thought he was seeing. A mare? Here? Admittedly nothing like the few others he had glimpsed in his lifetime, but then he was hardly ordinary, himself... Ah, but now was not the time to be lost in thought again. If he wanted to speak to someone for the first time in - well, he wasn't quite sure how long it had been, Shaeran had never been very good at keeping track of time - he had best not wait too long.
It wouldn't do to watch her leave without greeting her, now would it?

A shadow had passed over Skald and spooked her; later she would realise it was probably just some sort of seabird, but at the time it had caused her to duck back under, her fin-less tail propelling her in the manner of a sea snake, rippling to propel her forwards and down, heading unknowingly past the stallion who she hadn't noticed in her flight.
She paused on a ledge, coming to rest behind some coral, her hooves digging into the rock to keep herself stationary, her body and tail coming to rest in a graceful curl on the ledge itself. She sniffed again, this time checking the currents for anyone or anything nearby, and twitched her nose.
She thought she caught something and peered across from where she was perched, flicking her spike tipped tail.

Curious, the mare not only hadn't noticed him, but she seemed a bit frightened by something. Something from above, perhaps? Well, there were many strange things that lived above the surface - he had seen their shadows more than once, so Shaeran couldn't blame her for being startled. Best to be gentle, then if she was still nervous...
He swam closer, his spiked fins flaring out as he wove around the coral until he was in a spot where - if she so chose - the female could clearly see him, and he watched her with wide blue eyes. The mer wasn't quite certain how to address her; after all it had been so long since he'd spoken to another; it was possible he didn't have the ability to communicate!
... All right, so perhaps that was a bit ridiculous. Still, he wasn't really sure what to say, so he just watched. He was rather impressed (or maybe it was the loneliness talking) by the eerie quality to the kelpi's depth-dark eyes. Yes, she was quite an interesting-looking mare, and not just because she was the only one he knew of within a very large area.
Although that likely did have something to do with it.

She'd seen him approach, seen him this time but stayed where she was, her tail gently moving. She was wary but he seemed harmless enough..well he had far less in the way of spikes than she did at any rate!
Skald looked him over, slowly and quietly, noting that he was actually bigger..or longer than she was, he had a proper fin to his tail and even a mane, something that she found unusual and striking given that she was a all scales except for the fur at her two hooves.
She wondered at his silence, that he was just there in front of her without saying anything and so she broke it first, tiny bubbles forming as she spoke.
'Hello.' Nothing grand, just a simple greeting.

"Hello," Shaeran responded, the word feeling strange on his tongue. "I don't..." he paused and trailed off, curling into a more comfortable position, his fins flaring out around him as he thought of what to say here. "I don't believe I've seen you here before," he finally settled on saying, flicking his pronged fins idly - they weren't spikes, no, but they could ward off some of the more dangerous creatures that chose to bother him.
"I'm Shaeran," he said, again breaking the silence that had existed between them so constantly. Was it a stallion's loneliness that made him think that this queer kelpi - for she was a kelpi, and not a mer, despite her strange build, it was clear after a little observation - was beautiful in her strangeness? There was an exotic nature to her looks, the multiple spikes and those endlessly-dark eyes...
Bah, he was just being silly now. Social he could be, but he didn't want to frighten the poor mare away; she was the first company he'd had in ages, and drat it all if he wasn't going to be polite!

It was a good thing that Shaeran hadn't shared his inner musings that Skald was a kelpi; for a start she'd never thought of herself as anything other than a mer, and she only had two legs! She watched the motion of his fins, and looked directly at him when he gave his name, giving her own in reply.
'Skald.' she said, shifting somewhat and sending a cloud of pebbles into the water. She also caused a few little fish that had been nibbling on her scales to dart away but when she settled they returned.
'I've not see you before.' she commented. 'Then again, I see so few where I spend my time.'

Where she spent her time? Hm... well, now curiosity had bitten him, and the stallion uncurled from around his perch to swim around Skald in a circle, fins no longer as flared as they had been. "Where do you spend your time, that you never see others? Even I will cross paths with others on occasion."
Truly, he was curious - the female was so very exotic looking, did that not mean that she spent her time in exotic places? It made reasonable sense in Shaeran's mind, and he was eager to learn about new places.

Skald watched as he swam around her, tilting her head to follow him. She shifted whilst she did so and the cleaner fish swam away again.
'Deep, a sort of chasm filled with sea geysers that push out jets of very warm water.' she moved her tail, watching it for a moment before looking back at Shaeran.
'Truthfully I find these waters rather cold in comparison so I don't often venture away from my home. But likewise the warmer waters don't suit others and so I will only see anyone other than fish when I leave my home.'
