Ignis was having a rather ordinary evening, he had risen with the sun and flown a few miles away to a thick forest. He had spent the day exploring this new place before coming to rest in the shade of a large twisted oak on the banks of a churning river. He folded his legs under him and stretched his wings, intending on spending the night and returning to his eyrie in the morning. The moon was high in the sky, providing plenty of light, and he amused himself by watching the silvery minnows as they twisted and darted through the crystal clear water. His thoughts felt scattered, he was confused. Lately he had a nagging feeling that something was missing in his life, but he couldn't quite decide what it was. Ignis had always enjoyed the freedom of his solitude, he had no ties, no complications, no responsibilities. As usual he managed to suppress the feeling, choosing to ignore it rather than trying to figure out what it meant. Ignis yawned as he scanned the surrounding forest. For a moment, he thought he caught a glimpse of purest ivory right out of the corner of his eye and perhaps a glint of silver but when he turned to get a better look, it had disappeared.... Probably just a reflection of the moonlight.

User ImageJessamine stalked agitatedly back and forth around the small dent she had made next to a huge oak tree. Cradled within the roots were two luminescent baskets that nearly glowed in the moonlight. Despite looking a little worse for the wear, they seemed to be doing just fine.

She stole glances at them from the corner of her eye every now and then. Muttering under her breath, she stomped away from the massive tree and the precious cargo it watched over.

The wrap on her leg contained the only other evidence (other than the flimsy things beneath the tree) of her time with her love. 'Not my love...not anymore...' she whispered to herself in a broken voice.

Her hoof impacted something with a dull clang and she knew what it was even before she looked down. It was the knife she had thrown as far as she could. It was a reminder that she was impure...tainted...not good enough. Jess let loose a short whinny of frustration that the knife would not leave her alone. It was all its fault...

A white shape winged through the trees and landed next to the knife. The owl that had taken a liking to her landed near the knife and looked at her inquisitively.

"What are you looking at?" she muttered, "Take it AWAY!"

The owl bobbed its head, picked up the knife and winged silently away. Jessamine watched it until it was just a white speck, and finally It was gone. She cried.

Ignis started out of his reverie, Indeed, there was a white form flitting about like a ghost on the other side of the tree. It was small and lithe, with shiny tumbling locks that seemed to be of spun moonlight. She was adorned with satiny purple ribbons and frothy white lace that whispered with her agitated movements.

She seemed quite distressed, over the sloshing of the stream he could just make out bits and pieces of her words. A metallic clang made him start, and he was astonished to see a great white bird alight next to the strange mare. It seemed to understand her harsh words although Ignis felt only confusion as he watched the owl flit away again almost as quickly as it had come, this time bearing something in it's sharp talons. There were dark smudges on the owls wings and indeed there seemed to be similar dark smudges around the mares mouth and hooves. He couldn't make out their color, but the sight of them twisted his stomach.

Ignis rose carefully, trying not to make any noise. He thought the owl probably had the right idea. He felt a surge of irritation that the mare had intruded upon his solitude, but decided the best course of action would probably be to depart with as little fuss as possible. He stepped foreword hesitantly and winced as a twig snapped loudly underneath his hoof.
"Blast!" he muttered under his breath.

Jessamine jumped at the noise and spun around. She growled as well as her vocal cords would allow at the darkness in front of her. Something was there, she just new it.

A flash of orange registered to her eyes and she tensed even more. If it was HIM, she would not hesitate to protect them.

'Don't they need protection from you as well?' a small voice in the back of her mind pointed out.

"NO! I would never hurt them..." she shouted, momentarily distracted from the threat.

'You already have. Don't you remember? Just look at them, you attacked them just yesterday.' the voice pointed out, sounding oddly like her ex-lover.

She didn't look. She knew what had happened. It was one of the reasons she ordered the owl to take the knife away. It wasn't anything major, but there were rough patches on the surface of the baskets now and they looked like they had been mauled by a small animal.

"Shut up!" she told the voice rudely. It obligingly did not speak again.

Her attention suddenly zeroed in on the being approaching her once again.

"Stay away from me!" she shouted.

Ignis' crimson orbs were baffled as he gazed across the clearing at the obviously disturbed little mare. Shut up? He hadn't even said anything! What was it with the mares he had been encountering lately? He fumed silently, thinking back on the strange orange mare he had encountered the previous day. It was probably a result of their weaker constitutions he surmised with a dark look at the glowing form across from him. Inevitably their bizarre outbursts succeeded at putting him in a variety of awkward situations. To make matters worse, fate seemed quite content to continuously violate his solitude with the erratic, baffling, and thoroughly distressing activities of the weaker gender. Bracing himself for the inevitable hoopla to follow, Ignis folded his large wings and stared at her expectantly. Surprisingly instead of his temper sparking he felt a great surge of pity as he met her frenzied scarlet scrutiny. With a breathy exhale, his eyes softened.

She was quite possible the most alluring thing he had ever laid eyes on, but something about her was undeniably unsettling, he pondered that for a moment but simply could not put a hoof on it.

At her command, he froze, cautiously watching her. He felt instinctually that even his slightest movement would instantly provoke an violent and devastating attack, rather like that of a cornered animal. Her gaze was vicious, yet somehow injured. As his eyes became more adjusted to the gathering darkness he could make out the glistening smears of blood splattering her otherwise pristine coat. "Are you injured?" He questioned sharply, his words heated with a protective animosity that seemed to come out of nowhere, he didn't even know this female! "Has someone hurt you?" Ignis demanded again in a level voice as he resumed his advance, his hesitancy overwhelmed by a sudden surge of anger.

His eyes fell upon two faintly glowing baskets nestled in the gnarled roots of the tree and immediately he understood. The female was alone in a strange forest with her young, and it seemed she had been recently injured. It was not surprising that she would react in such a territorial way towards a strange stallion. But perhaps if he could convince her of his benign intentions she would allow him to guard her through the night? The urge was completely out of character for him. He simply didn't like passing time with other soquili, but deprived of the presence of her mate, he felt it was his responsibility to make the offer. It was, after all, the role of the male to provide protection. It occurred to him that it was entirely likely that the disconcerting feeling he experienced around her was due to witnessing what should be a gentle and nurturing female behaving in such a way.

He stopped again, trying to look as non-threatening as possible, a decidedly difficult task considering his imposing height. "I am Ignis" he offered in an almost gentle voice, "And I mean you no harm."

Jessamine backed away as the angeni showed himself. Dev? No. It couldn't be him. This one was much larger. Her ears laid back on her skull and she backed further, towards her baskets.

He wasn't moving closer for the moment, she calmed herself minutely. She almost laughed when he asked if someone had hurt her...no. No one had hurt her, at least not physically. She couldn't say the same for that squirrel a few hours ago though...it was most definitely hurt. Immediately she was ashamed of her appearance. If he wanted to think that the blood was hers, she would not stop him. She ignored the question.

Something about this huge stallion calmed her spirit somehow. She felt herself relax in his presence though she was still weary of the attention he seemed to be paying her baskets.

"I don't believe you...stay on that side." she demanded, moving to stand directly in front of her baskets to block them from view.

Ignis huffed rather irritably but obeyed the mare's frantic command. She was clearly unsettled and as much as he wanted to help her, he didn't want to send her off into a bout of hysterics. That would be just what he needed at a time like this, he rolled his eyes with a sarcastic twist of his mouth.

He appraised her silently for a few moments, one eyebrow delicately raised as she placed her gleaming form squarely infront of her baskets. He shook his head to clear his thoughts, she was beautiful to the point of distraction, literally, nevertheless her chillingly predatory gaze tied his stomach into knots. He was torn between wanting to bolt as far away from the clearing as possible and wanting to lose himself in her bewitching presence, her long waves of silken hair.....

What in the world was coming over him?

"Who are you?" His deep voice was uneasy, "Why are you out here alone?" Why are you covered in blood? The last unspoken question hung between them, The fact that she had rather shrewdly glossed over his question was not lost on him, and she moved gracefully, she did not seem injured at all.

Jessamine practically growled at the nearly glowing orange angeni in front of her. What business was it of HIS what she was doing out here? The only stallion she cared about had scorned her and sent her off with his spawn to raise by HERSELF. She didn't owe anyone answers.

She realized she was getting distracted by thoughts of HIM again and tried to reign them in. She got...violent when she thought of him. Her teeth itched for the familiar feeling of her cleaver.

The last time this had happened she had...gotten rough with the children.

"NO!" she yelled suddenly, shaking her head to rid herself of the thoughts. Heedless of the fact that the orange stallion still was waiting on his damnable answers.

Finally she decided he was worthy of at least her name.

"I am Jessamine. You may call me Jessamine." she said as if she hadn't just screamed a moment ago, half crazy with tangled emotions.

Ignis suppressed a grimace as something resembling a growl ripped out of the mare's throat. His temper flared at the implied challenge, but he calmed it with a deep breath. It wouldn't hurt to let her feel dominant in this situation, if that was what would allow her to feel at ease, so be it. Nevertheless it felt most unnatural to back down..... Then again, nothing about this encounter was very natural. Why should he expect the normalcy to kick in now?

"Jessamine," he repeated slowly, almost lovingly stressing each syllable as he tried out the word that put a name to this extravagant creature. Under different circumstances, he would have done everything in his power to win her favor, Ignis enjoyed a challenge, but she was clearly unsettled, and the tiny screaming voice in the back of his head wouldn't permit him to put words to the heady warmth that was bringing his blood to a slow boil...

The moment of reckoning had come. He could either quit this conversation and flee to the safe embrace of his mountain home or remain here, with her. It wasn't really a choice, he knew what he had to do. She wouldn't accept his protection willingly, he could see that now, she was doing everything but outright attacking him to let him know that he was not welcome. He would out maneuver her with sheer stubbornness then. He would have to depart in the morning, but this one night at least, Jessamine and her children would be safe.

Ignis retreated a few paces and then lay down, deliberately angling himself so he would have to pass between both her and the tree to get at the baskets. Hopefully that would put her somewhat at ease. "I think it would be best if we both tried to get some sleep Jessamine." He began in a firm voice, "I'll stay over here, and you can sleep over there. We'll be safer together than apart and this way you'll know exactly where I am at all times so you can keep an eye on me." His words were laced with wry humor but he managed to maintain a straight face and a stern gaze as he delivered his ultimatum. If she chose to leave, he would simply follow.

She shivered automatically at the way the big stallion said her name, it reminded her of him. Her eyes glazed over at a hundred remembered memories before she violently shook herself out of it. He meant nothing to her...he had dared leave her.

At the stallion's pronouncement, Jessamine was momentarily thrown for a loop. What on earth was he doing? She shuffled nervously before mentally chastising herself for it. Her ears laid back on her skull, nearly disappearing into her mane she was so agitated.

"What do you think you are doing? Get away from me!" she yelled, snorting in agitation.

A small part of her wanted to accept the protection at face value and be able to sleep with a small sense of security. It would be so nice, she thought. Since she had given birth she hadn't slept a night through. The paranoia was there constantly, what if something came in the night and hurt them or took them? She was constantly jerking awake from nightmares of waking to find her children gone or dead or slaughtered (by her own hand? a small voice mumbled in her head).

She barely acknowledged that portion of herself, the rest of her put on high alert by the actions of the angeni in front of her. (So similar...a voice whispered.)

"I don't know what your game is. I will hurt you if you come near them." she threatened in a low voice, debating leaving herself.

Ignis sighed, Nothing was ever easy when dealing with females. How tedious. He fixed her with his molten crimson orbs, and his expression was long-suffering. He knew temper and impatience would get him nowhere. But he had had just about enough of being threatened by this fiesty little mare. He was going to have to do it the hard way then. Honestly, he had been hoping she would just go to sleep, it would have been so much...simpler.....Bah.

Ignis once again rose to his feet, "Can you even begin to imagine the types of creatures that inhabit this forest Jessamine? You Need my help." He began, his voice steady, "If I intended you any harm, I would have gotten right down to business, not wasted all this time chattering" His inflection was slightly sarcastic as he fixed her with a rueful glare. "I don't particularly enjoy passing the time soothing angry females who look at me as though they want to sink their teeth into me and rip me into itty bitty pieces-"

A cold shiver raced down his spine.

"- Or anyone else for that matter!" He tacked on at the end to disguise his momentary discomfort.

He stalked closer, his fiery wings unfurling to their full span, sparks practically jumping from his eyes as he ground his teeth together in irritation. "you can't very well protect yourself and two baskets at the same time, What if there were multiple attackers? I can't in good conscious leave you here vulnerable, and I could really care less if you accept my protection willingly."

His rant had carried him very close to her now, only a few feet away, so he stopped, more out of propriety than out of any sense of self preservation. "If I was here to hurt you, I could catch you no matter how fast you ran." He stated firmly his voice deceptively mild. He emphasized his last statement with a powerful stroke of his wings, directing a gust of air straight into her face. "And as a side note, I don't appreciate being labeled as a child killer Jessamine" Ignis growled, "You need help. I'm offering myself as a substitute until the father returns."

Jessamine bristled at the tone this stallion was taking with her. She had been fine on her own so far, where did he get off telling her what she was capable of. He had just met her!

By the end of his tirade, he was only a few feet from her and she wished at that moment that Cleaver would come back with her knife...but she had sent the owl off to hide it from her. It wasn't good for the children for her to have it here. That didn't change the fact that she had a now burning desire to use it on the orange angeni in front of her at this moment.

"What do you know?" she demanded, "You know nothing of me. When the father returns? You might as well stay forever then because he's NEVER COMING BACK!"

She screamed the last part, a tear making its way down her face as she shouted the truth at a total stranger. All of a sudden the fight seemed to leave her and she sagged. Her head fell towards the ground and she heaved a quiet sob. (Its your fault...) she ignored the strange voice that kept speaking to her for the moment.

"Do what you want." she muttered, "I wont stop you."

He had wanted her to stop yelling and threatening him, but gods help him, he had never thought she would start crying! She seemed to deflate with the release of that single tear and he was left staring at a broken mare who had obviously just suffered through an indescribable loss.

As the last echo of her scream faded, they were left with a tangible silence as Ignis struggled to make sense of what she had just admitted. He couldn't simply shuck her pain off into a little corner the way he usually handled his own uncomfortable emotions. He wasn't sure what to do, his very being shuddered at the longing pain in that single sob. Ignis found that he couldn't find the words to express the emotions tangling in his chest and knotting his stomach, so he did the only other thing he could think of. It was completely out of character, to be sure, but he was touched by her vulnerability. The tough, snarly male exterior melted away.

Throwing caution to the wind, Ignis' long legs carried him foreword until he was right next to her. Her warm scent was soothing beneath the tangy reek of blood. He braced himself in case she decided to attack, but found he didn't care, any small modicum of comfort he could offer was worth rhe price she extracted in blood. Ignis leaned down and wrapped his huge wings around her, pulling her to his chest and holding her tightly in his embrace for a moment before letting go. As he backed away slowly, he caught sight of the baskets in their cradle of roots and his eyes suddenly filled with tears. The thought of any male who would abandon both his mate and his unborn children made Ignis sick. He felt deeply for these two little souls, blissfully unaware of the turmoil into which they had been born. They looked a little worse for the wear, Ignis noticed, which made him glance at the mother with faint suspicion. Perhaps this was the reason the father had left? Perhaps he had attacked his own baskets and Jessamine had forced him to leave. He decided not to broach the sensitive subject and instead retreated back to the relative safety of his side of the clearing.

"We really should rest... Its been a long night and you look exhausted."
He stated offhand, and then gazed into her eyes;
"I promise I will harm neither you nor the baskets Jessamine. I will stay with you tonight so you can sleep in peace... We can talk more in the morning.... If you desire more permanent protection, or a safe place to stay for a while....

.....

Well we can talk about that tomorrow."
He concluded awkwardly as he once again lay down.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:02 am

She stayed still as the stallion approached swiftly, not caring what his intentions were. When he brought her into an embrace, she allowed herself to be comforted a small bit. Though the embrace reminded her of another that she would never feel again, the feeling of safety she had lacked for so long now was beginning to rear its head.

"I...thank you." was all she said, finally.

The offer of perhaps a place to stay for a prolonged period...perhaps somewhere to raise her children? It was a bright point of hope for her as she lay down next to the baskets. She stole a glance at them before looking away again. This stallion offered her a safe place...but what about keeping them safe from her? She was the cause of the rough look the wicker shells currently sported and she could only pray that the beings within would not have suffered from the attack.

"I find myself believing you for some reason." she said from her position, now on the ground, "However, if you are lying I will end you."

With that last warning, she lay her head down and pretended to drift off to sleep.

Ignis bowed his head in mute acknowledgment, not trusting himself to speak past the lump in his throat. He did manage a quiet chuckle at her threat, "fair enough." He murmured.

He watched her get comfortable for a few moments and then relaxed, allowing his head to rest on his foreleg as he wrapped his wings around himself for warmth. He had meant his offer, although he had to admit, transferring this little family to the safety of his mountain home would require some seriously creative thinking on his part. He was rather surprised at how much the thought of sharing his home with them appealed to him. Although he would never admit it, he realized that he no longer felt the desire to live out the rest of his life in lonely isolation from the rest of the world. Curious how this one chance meeting could affect his worldview so profoundly.... Ignis felt the beginnings of a rough affection for Jessamine, nothing romantic, although he had to admit her visage was breathtaking. She simply wasn't the right mare for him. He couldn't say exactly how he had come to the conclusion, but he knew it was right.

Completely absorbed in his silent reverie, Ignis didn't even notice when it was that he drifted off. His deep breathing was even and his eyelids fluttered every once in a while as he twitched in his sleep.
