"Aerith please stand still" Mercy scolded the little white while she tried to oil a particularly hard to get at spot of flaky skin under her wing 'I can't help it mine, Sunny is tickling me!' Aerith responded, skittering sideways as the playful young gold flit continued to tease her.

Not that Aerith was doing all that much to prevent her, Mercy knew quite well that Aerith had only to tell the firelizard to behave and she would...but was useing the gold beast as an excuse to play herself. "Honestly you two! A bit of sun comes out and you forget how to behave" She shook her finger at both dragon and flit in good humor and set the oiling rag aside - she'd wait until Aerith got sleepy from all this play. the exercise would be good for her and the sun was feeling warmer today then it had been in days so she couldn't really blame either of them.

Kazairl had just finished his work at the runner stables, which left him now flushed and shining with sweat. He was used the harder jobs on account of his unusual size and accompanying strength, and the turns of Candidacy work had marked him. He was tautly muscled (almost too lean in fact) beneath his loose-fitting tunic and pants, but he was also clear-eyed, focused, and steady of mind as he was of hand. He felt half like the runners he’d been working with, and while part of him wanted to sag into the cool grass and sleep, he’d known better than to let him muscles cramp that way and had set out walking. The sun was warm, but the breeze still carried the thin chill of the last few days, and by the time he spotted that little white dragon in the distance the sweat had mostly dried from him.

There had been plenty of talk about the pair in the barracks, mainly about the dragonet of course though. Whites were supposed to be neuter, and while a few boys either insisted this one had a female mindset or simply blurred the dragon’s pronoun with the rider’s, Kazairl wasn’t quite certain about what the little creature would have preferred being called. Curiosity led him closer, and when he was within easy speaking distance he gave Mercy a smirk and nodded and the dragon and firelizard at play. “A pretty pair, but they seem to be getting the best of you today.”

Mercy glanced up as Kazairl approached, she had seen him around of course though she'd never spoken to him personally. Not that such a thing ever stopped Mercy from being friendly and she beamed a smile at him for his comment "Nothing new there" She told him "They generally do, thankfully neither of them are real troublemakers...just young, else I'd forever be chasing after them" She joked.

Aerith of course had become aware of his presence and stopped paying to peer at him 'Do you know this one mine?' she asked before padding over, she still moved with the awkward moment of a hatchling and was of course still much smaller then her clutchmates...but Mercy was glad to see she at least had her balance now for the most part and didn't tumble about when she moved 'No, I don't...but I'm sure he's a good sort' Mercy assured her white who continued looking at Kazairl dubiously before giving him a welcoming chirp which Sunny echoed as he alighted on the whites back.

"I'm afraid I don't recall your name - though I've seen you around" Mercy confessed 'but I'm Mercy and this is Aerith and Sunny" She introduced the white dragon and gold flit"

Kazairl tilted his head at the approaching dragonet. It – she – (he had decided to default the white’s gender to its rider’s unless he was corrected), was such a small thing. All atypicals were small when they hatched, but this one looked even smaller somehow, and infinitely more fragile, though that might have been his imagination at work. Shards, even the golden flitt seemed more robust and full of vitality than the gentle-looking dragon.

“I’m Kazairl,” he said and, flashing a winning smile, gave a sweeping bow the to complementary gold and white pair. “A pleasure to meet you both. And I know your name of course,” he continued, cocking his head to Mercy. “The weyr’s all abuzz about you and Aerith. Quite a dramatic Impression and all.”

Mercy blushed slightly - she had of course overheard some of the rumors going about, some of them she wasn't very keen on - like the ones involving Benden and while Aerith certainly was special Mercy firmly believed she was in the end just the same as any other dragon, smaller and paler...but a dragon none the less and she didn't want to any extra attention just because her dragon happened to hatch white. Aerith on the other hand was completely unruffled by the added attention 'They will see we are like the others in time mine' she assured Mercy.

"It's a pleasure to formally meet you Kazairl" Mercy said, he seemed like a nice enough sort - he certainly had a pretty smile. "I guess she wasn't really expected" Mercy agreed "I know I certainly wasn't expecting to impress by that point" Of course pretty much all the candidates had likely felt the same by then, hope tended to falter as the available eggs dwindled down.

'Which just proves how silly it is to loose hope' Proclaimed Aerith in such a firm tone that Mercy had to smile a bit "Aerith reminds me that that just proves one should never stop hoping"

Hah! A pretty little blush there! Kazairl smirked slightly wider and tried to refrain from teasing her further about the spectacle they’d made on the sands. There was nothing to be ashamed of about the exceptional Impression in his opinion, but he didn’t want to heckle her too badly. She seemed a soft sort.

“She’s right, of course,” he said, inclining his head slightly to the dragon in deference. “You should have expected. Shards, I did, and I still do. I’ll get my dragon someday, and your and yours will best the rest of the weyr. Know your place, girl.” He laughed at his own bold statement, and there wasn’t a trace of sarcasm in his voice.

Aerith chirped an agreement with Kazairl's statements, he might be a bit bold but at least he was bold about the right type of things, Mercy could learn to be a bit bolder from time to time...but of course that was her job to see too and she'd certainly attempt to do so.

"I expect you will at that" Mercy remarked as she took in his confidence about the whole matter, with that type of confidence she imagined it would only be a matter of time before a hatchling chose him - sure she didn't have the most experience in the world with hatchings, she'd only been to two of them but from what she'd observed the confident types generally did pretty well. Maybe he'd even get a bronze 'we shall have to watch and see at the next hatching' Aerith added as she caught wind of Mercy's thoughts. 'I guess we will won't we?' And there didn't seem to be much of a question about them making it there either - sure at the beginning lots of people had wondered if they would make it, but most of those looks had dissipated as time had gone on.

Still she was a bit foggy on the whole 'role' thing, where exactly in the pecking order did a white rider fall? It was something she figured they would find out as time went on and she being Mercy and hardly being the type to keep such thoughts to herself decided to share this thought with Kazairl. "As long as they let us try we'll certainly give it our best shot" She told him "Though to be honest I'm not sure exactly where our place is precisely, most of the other colors even the rares ones have worked out pretty good niches in the Weyr but I guess there has't been a white in so long that I don't think anyone really knows what to do with us, mostly they just worry because she's small"

Kaz nodded thoughtfully, pondering. It was true: the white was an oddity now, popular to discuss and worry about in the weyr, but how much smaller would she stay than the other dragons, and would she develop healthily? More, the pair’s duties could differ based on their ability, and where would that place them? “Well she’ll grow,” he said, dismissing that problem with a shrug. “So long as she’s healthy she’ll reach whatever length she’s meant to, and I’m sure you’re capable of caring for her. As for what to do with the two of you, that might be your greatest fortune. You can find what you’re both good at and adapt yourselves to it without as much critique. You can succeed just as well as any other pairing without any competition for comparison.”

'He makes a good point' Aerith remarked with a whirl of pleasure in her eyes 'It is nice to think we shall be able to find what we do best without simply being placed where others think we should be' She told her rider, bumping Mercys hand lightly.

Mercy hadn't really thought of it like that before and absently scratched Aerith's head at the questing bump while she thought about it. 'it is a nice thought' she admitted to the little dragon before responding to Kaz. "She'll grow" mercy agreed "and I hadn't really thought about everything else in that way before, Aerith likes the thought of finding our own way anyways" she commented with a small chuckle "She's an independent little beast sometimes" She stated with a fond tickle of the whites eye ridges.

Given his confident nature Mercy was finding herself more and more surprised that he hadn't managed to impress yet - surely it wouldn't be too much longer she told herself..some bronze or sturdy brown would snap him up as a suitable rider for sure.
