Gigi’s bag was far lighter than usual as she headed home from Apollo’s. Her precious snowglobes were no longer around to weigh it down. The little calling voice had been silenced. Gigi had treated herself to a ridiculous gingerbread-flavoured latte with cream and brightly coloured sprinkles, but it hadn’t lifted her spirits.

It was strange, the day after Christmas, to realise that the snowglobes were really gone. Gigi had hoped they’d just been misplaced in all the to-ing and fro-ing on Christmas Day, but once everyone had gone home, she’d searched and searched. The news had said it was a big terrorist trick. All Gigi knew was that her mum hadn’t let her out of the house. There was something she’d been supposed to do, and she’d let them down.

It was snowing again. Or possibly still. Like someone kept turning the key.

Unusually despondent, coffee in hand, Gigi took the shortcut through the park, her soft humming a ghost of the snowglobes’ mournful song.

Eirlys twirled in the snow, her movements causing the folds of her skirt to fall gracefully around her as the winter sunlight caused the frozen folds to glitter.

For once the snow dancer’s heart wasn’t in the dance, her movements more of a forced wooden thing. Just the way her heart felt.

Two days ago, the shy snow dancer had felt the call of her Princess – her beautiful, wonderful Princess.

Okay so Eirlys hadn’t known of her Princess before that moment, before her call. Did not even realise that she even had a Princess. But she knew her Princess was wonderful – she had to be. She was her Princess, her Princess was wonderful and that was that!

But those nasty scary people had hurt her Princess with their strange magic and weapons and Eirlys had fled terrified, back to the park. Not looking back, not even at that awful scream.

No Eirlys had kept running until she had reached her little haven in the park and there she had stayed just in case some of the scary people were lurking around out there.

The movement caught Gigi's eye, a blue-white sparkle glimpsed through the snow-covered trees. She squinted into the bushes, tilting her head and retracing her steps, but couldn't make out anything unusual. She shook her head and continued on, prepared to dismiss it as just a bird, but no more than a few steps later she rounded a tree to find her shortcut blocked by what appeared to be a ballerina, all alone and spinning in the snow.

Gigi stepped quietly closer, not wanting to interrupt but fascinated by the ethereal girl in her floating gown. The figure's slightly stilted twirling reminded her sharply of the mechanical snowglobe dancers.

She took a long sip of her coffee, breathing in the steam, but though her head felt perfectly clear and wide awake, the dancer remained.

"Are you real?" she asked, in the soft voice reserved for wild creatures that might startle and disappear without warning.

Eirlys completed a couple more twirls before curtsying as if to an invisible audience.

Looking up as she completed the gesture, the snow dancer couldn’t help the startled squeak that escaped her throat as she realised she really did have an audience.

Well okay an audience of one, but still an audience nonetheless.

As she studied the girl nervously Eirlys wondered if one of the scary people from the square had found her.

“Who are you?” She asked at last, managing to refrain from mumbling ‘Please don’t be scary’ under her breath as she waited for an answer.

Gigi had never seen anything so graceful. Or so frightened-looking. She'd expected the girl to be annoyed at her for interrupting, or maybe just embarrassed. She looked around, in case there was an axe murderer sneaking up behind her or something, but they were alone.

"No, it's all right!" she said, holding out her free hand, wanting to reassure. "I'm Gigi, pleased to meet you! You. Um. Look cold?"

The poor thing looked practically blue. How long had she been out here, Gigi wondered. "What's your name?" she asked.

The outstretched was eyed suspiciously for a moment, but after few seconds of nothing happening, the snow dancer gave a small curtsy. The movement came off somewhat jerkily, as the dancer tried to curtsy without taking her eyes off the other.

“I don’t get cold.” a moment of silence before the dancer spoke, her voice quiet but matter of fact. Actually Eirlys liked the cold weather, especially when it snowed – loved the simple beauty of it and how it turned even the dullest surface into something almost magical.

“I’m Eirlys.” It was the other's request for a name that prompted the dancer into speech again. ”You can call me Eirlys.”

Gigi dropped her hand back to her side when the dancer glared at it, a little hurt, but she smiled again at the curtsy. It was so strange and old-fashioned. And how could she not get cold, especially dressed like that? Gigi was all rugged up and only the coffee cup was keeping her fingers from frostbite, she was sure. It must be a dancing thing, Gigi decided. Metabolism or something. Part of her wanted to believe this was some Crystal girl, with her attitude, but there was something unearthly about her that went beyond any private schooling.

"That's a pretty name," she tried. "Nice to meet you, Eirlys". She hoped she was pronouncing it right.
