Welcome to my Class! today i will be explaining many things about competitive battling!
*whips a desk with a ruler* YOU WILL LEARN IT AND YOU WILL LIKE IT >=O
but seriously....
this is pretty much for people who are just getting into competitive battling, or need to read rules, find out what's usually banned or just need some tips.
I'll start with the most basic of the basics!
learn it, love it, breathe it, eat it etc. Topic 1: Tiers basically, tiers are a bunch of categories used to sort pokemon based on their power/usefulness. they are divided into:
Uber
OU (over used)
BL (borderline)
UU (under used)
NU (never used)
NFE (not fully evolved) this is a list of EVERY pokemon up to SS/HG categorized in this format
http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/black and white are all currently in limbo, meaning pretty much nothing has been decided, only the most uber of all ubers on the list are still uber, the rest are debatable.
all of the titles are pretty self explanatory. Ubers are more than likely going to be banned in competitive play unless stated.
Next, i will be talking about....Clauses!these are rules set up by the players for a more fair and competitive battling environment. they are as followed
Sleep Clause: You cannot put two of your opponent's Pokemon to sleep at the same time. (Rest not applicable)
Evasion Clause: No moves that INCREASE evasion such as Double Team and Minimize may be used. Things like Sand-Attack, mud-slap and Sand Veil are still legal.
Species Clause: No two of the same Pokemon may be used on one team.
One Hit KO Clause: One hit knock out moves such as(but not limited to) Horn Drill or Sheer Cold are not to be used.
Uber Clause No Uber Pokemon are allowed. These Pokemon include:
-Mewtwo
-Mew
-Ho-oh
- Lugia
- Kyogre
- Groudon
- Rayquaza
- Deoxys (all forms)
- Dialga
- Palkia
- Giratina (both forms)
- Shaymin (sky form)
- Darkrai
- Arceus
- Manaphy
- Wobbuffet
- Salamence
Item Clause 4 or more Pokemon cannot hold the same item in your party (the max is 3) with the exception of the choice items and focus sashes(one each per team) One choice scarf, one choice band ect.
---The item Soul Dew is banned.---
Selfdestruct Clause The moves Selfdestruct, Explosion, Perish Song, Destiny Bond, or any other such move may not be used if both players only have 1 remaining Pokemon. If a player uses one of those moves under this condition, they automatically lose.
Top screen clause:this one is for black and white only, since you are able to see your opponent's pokemon on the top screen in online battles before the battle.
this clause means you have to cover your top screen before the battle starts.
Next, EV training! this might get complicated~ get ready for thisEV training is killing specific pokemon the gain Effort values. an Effort Value is a point awarded to any pokemon that kills another. for example, i have a wurmple, this wurmple kills a wurmple, it gains ONE hp EV.
for every 4 EVs your pokemon gets in ANY stat, it will increase by 1. for example, my wurmple kills 4 other wurmples, it gains 1 hp. if it had 14 hp, it'll have 15 hp now.
every pokemon is programmed to get a maximum of 510 EVs,and 255 is the max for ANY stat
the math part of EV training is dividing everything by four. Example, your wurmple wants strong attack and HP. if you kill 255 shuppets, you'll get 255 attack EVs. 255 whismers = 255 HP. you'll notice that if you divide 255 by 4 you'll have 3 useless points in both Attack and HP, so you're missing out of 6 points here that can be used to boost another stat by 1. so the main idea, plan your pokemon, map out your EVs and remember, DIVIDE ALL EVs BY FOUR and that's how much your stat will be boosted by.
this is just some crazy pokemon lingo, this explains many things when you read a veteran's post about sweepers walls phazers etc. this also helps decide what pokemon you should have in a party and how you will make them.on with the lingo!Sweeper: this category branches off into 3 different kinds of sweeper. physical, Mixed and special.
a
physical sweeper is a pokemon that is FAST and STRONG with physical attacks.
wevile is a great example of a physical sweeper. it has VERY high attack and VERY high speed.
a
special sweeper is similar to a physical one, but for special attack.
alakazam is a great example of a special sweeper. it's VERY fast and VERY strong in special attack.
a
mixed sweeper is one that is VERY fast, and good in both attack and special attack. a few examples are infernape, houndoom, and jirachi.
Wall: a wall is a pokemon that can take hits, it's a pokemon with high HP, SP.def and def. it branches off into the same categories as a sweeper, but with defenses instead. Shuckle, umbreon and bastiodon are all
mixed walls. blissey is a
special wall and skarmory is a
physical wall. these are some examples.
Annoyer: a pokemon that is specifically made to piss off your opponent.
these sets usually include moves that prevent your opponent from doing anything,or setting them back a turn by removing buffs like dragon dance. moves that are set into this category are: taunt, hypnosis, encore, attract etc.
Hazer: a pokemon that uses haze to clear all stat changes. enough said, this is simple
Phazer: short for pseudo hazer, basically it's the same concept as haze but using moves like roar to send your opponent's pokemon back which removes their buffs.
Hax:a term used when something very unlikely happens and you're all like "WTF IS THIS!? HAX!!"
knowing many pokemon can help you out A LOT, for example you're not gonna want to send out an alakazam on a blissey. it's suicide. all pokemon are organized into these categories for a reason, if you want a physical alakazam, you're not gonna go any where with it cuz it's attack stat is horrible.
this is about team building, I won't go in depth, because this varies between trainer's preferences, this will work as a skeleton i supposea good team is more than likely to have:
1 physical sweeper
1 special sweeper
1 mixed sweeper
1 physical wall
1 special wall
1 wild card (erufuun B/W pokemon XD)
nuff said?
this one is easy i know XD a few tips for the walls, you can use it as a defensive core, skarmbliss for example is a famous one, if your opponent sends out a physical sweeper, skarmory comes out, they switch to a special sweeper, you set up rocks.you switch to blissey, they use flame thrower, you take nothing, they switch, you use thunder wave on what ever comes out, they will keep switching and they'll be vulnerable to your attacks. and there you go ^_^
and finally....
Type coverage!this is VERY straight forward, simple and rather TM consuming XD
basically, you mix weaknesses with some of the lingo taught above. for example, you have an alakazam which is a SPECIAL SWEEPER, he knows focus blast, psychic, grass knot, and hidden power ice.<--- which are special moves
you're fighting weivile, he's ice/dark type, so focus blast is 4x effective, since he's a physical sweeper, he WILL NOT survive unless it misses.
on the other hand, if you're fighting an umbreon, it's only 2x effective, and since he's a mixed wall HE WILL LIVE most of the time.... basically what i'm saying is learn a few common strategies and find out what pokemon are frail or bulky.
now for offence, you want your pokemon to have AS MUCH coverage as possible, so you can hit things well. there are some combinations that will NO MATTER WHAT hit anything for neutral to super effective damage,
these combos are
Quakedge (earthquake and stone edge) and
boltbeam (thunder bolt and ice beam) this is AMAZING type coverage, but this is just an example.
another topic integrated into this one is called
STAB.
No, it does not mean take a sword and stab some one with it XD
it means
Same Type Attack Bonus.
STAB ^_^ it's really easy, if you're a water pokemon and you use surf, you get a 1.5x boost to power. easy. so keep this in mind while you're making a moveset for your pokemon.
STAB moves, then the rest are coverage or support like wish/toxic etc. or any combination as you see necessary.
a few things to note: physical attacks are the ones with the spiky little bubble on them, special attacks are the circly purple ones and misc. moves are grey.
if you go to summary, and look at the moves that your pokemon have, it will be in a little rectangle, you've all seen this, you should know what i'm talking about.
~*~*~*~*~UPDATE~*~*~*~*~i knew i missed important things~ well, I shall continue ^_^
IVsiv, it stands for individual value. for every stat there is a number from 0 to 31 assigned to each stat. like EVs these boost your stat, BUT! there's a difference this time, each iv increases a stat by 1. 31 ivs means you have +31 in any stat that has them. unlike EVs you have little control over this.
when you catch, hatch, or receive a pokemon from an NPC in game, they are automatically assigned to a pokemon. there are a few items in in HG/SS that effect this however, if a parent pokemon is holding a power weight for example, it will most likely inherit the speed iv of the parent that is holding it. if neither parent's are holding "power" items (weight, brace, etc) the pokemon will inherit 3 random ivs from their parents.
I'm not too great at explaining this, so if you still don't understand, look up iv guides on google or something.
another topic:
Breeding!it may seem as simple as male pokemon, female pokemon, egg.
it could be, but if you want COMPETITIVELY BRED POKEMON, there's a lot more to it than that.
if you want a pokemon with certain moves, that's the male's doing, if the male has TM moves or level up moves, or egg moves itself, it will pass them down to the offspring. on the other hand, if you give the female an everstone, it's nature will be passed down. no matter what, the pokemon that is bred, will be the same species as the female. the pokemon can breed with anything in the same egg group, these are the egg groups
Amorphous (Indeterminate)
Bug
Dragon
Fairy
Field (Ground)
Flying
Grass
Human-Like
Mineral
Monster
None (cannot breed) - All legendaries and babies, Unown.
Water1
Water2
Water3
and ditto.
Ditto fills the part of either parent, although, if it's in the male's spot, it cannot pass on moves, but if it's the female, it will still pass a nature if it's holding an ever stone.
onto my last topic for now
HIDDEN POWERbasically it changes type and power depending on iVs, that's all, no added effects, or anything. although, it is VERY important to competitive players due to the fact that it can substitute as a coverage move of a type that normally the pokemon can't learn.
