The same picturesque blonde reporter that brought the news of the discovery of the body of a female near the Route 8 Overpass came to life on the television screen once again in front of the County Government Complex that housed many a law enforcement agency and the thing of interest to most of the News 3 viewing community- the County Coroner’s Office. Ada Roman had been waiting on pins and needles for the last week or so for the coroner’s report on the woman whose body had been discovered by the haggard looking fisherman only days earlier. The discovery had caused a measurable spike in the ratings of the station and gave her cause to hope for her long sought after position as the lead female anchor for the News 3 morning news but also gave her cause to regret the whole sordid thing. Ada was disgusted with herself for shamelessly using the woeful end that this woman met for her own but she couldn’t keep herself from the climb to the top.
“Hello, this is Ada Roman with News 3 and we’ve got breaking news regarding the body found in the river near the Route 8 Overpass. The coroner’s office has released the identity of the victim based on physical characteristics and items found on the person at the time of the autopsy.”
Ada held up a manila packet given to her by the coroner himself to the camera before she opened it and began to read highlighted excerpts to the viewers at home.
“The female victim was identified as a Athena Dionysia Augustine, employed with World Wrestling Federation Guild. WWFG was doing a show in the area in the weeks before the body was discovered and was contacted to assist in the investigation into Ms. Augustine’s death. No further details have been released but the body was released to the family of Ms. Augustine and her remains will be interred in her home state of Alaska.”
Ada took a deep breath as she screened over the text of the report that had not been recited to the public and she could feel her stomach begin to sour and her frame begin to shake as she gazed at the horridly specific details of the demise of this unfortunate lady she’d been reporting on. She inhaled deeply before she wiped the stunned look off her face and proceeded with her duties.
“Since you, our viewers, have expressed interest in how this story unfolds, we have gathered footage from the burial in Anchorage, Alaska, for Athena Augustine. Our sister station, Action 21 News, has informed us that Ms. Augustine was buried yesterday in a private funeral ceremony attended by her immediate family and close friends and co-workers.”
It was not long after she resumed her place that one of the crew signaled that they had switched to footage obtained by a sister station of News 3 in Alaska. Ada approached the news truck and climbed inside to watch the screen as a group of men, serving as pallbearers, carried an oak coffin graced with gold handles and a gold leaf striping on the lid. The men slowly approached the grave and placed it on the stand above the opening of the grave. It was only a few seconds later that the coffin holding the remains was committed into the ground and the footage ended. Ms. Roman lifted the microphone back to where she could speak before she spoke the final words of the segment.
“My name is Ada Roman, News 3 reporter. It’s back to you, headquarters.”
