Nora knew she was going to be left alone today by the care giver. She had already arranged for Nora to be "babysat"; something which was foreign to Nora. In the orphanage she had been watched by many people at one time. This time she was being spied on by someone. Nora hid her journal in her chest at the foot of her bed, along with all of her mathematical equations she had worked out, and her theory on black holes. She made her bed and dusted her desk. She put all her pens in their proper place and organized her freshly washed clothes by color. By noon she descended the stairs and found herself just in time to be greeted by her cousin, Hank, who was apparently going to engage in the activity of "babysitting" with her. She wondered quietly to herself whether he would sit on her or not. She did so hate the idea of being sat on. She then pondered if she was a baby. No matter, she thought, I'll just say not a word to him and stay away from the furniture, then he cant possibly sit on me. The care giver was leaving, closing the door behind her and Nora felt sudden panic welling up in her throat.

A few days ago, Metz had told Hank that apparently he had another quasi-aunt, named Hunts, who had also adopted a meta, so he had another quasi cousin. And then he had found out that Aunt Hunts needed a babysitter, and Hank found himself volunteered.

He got to drive over, which was kind of cool, cause Metz had pretty much bullied the people at the MVA into understanding that he was technically only a few months old but was physically almost 18, and got him one, and was driving Metz's cranky old cruiser to and from school, and apparently to Aunt Hunts's house.

He wasn't sure what a kid that liked calculators would want to do, so he tried to keep an open mind as Aunt Hunts, who was very short, left him facing off with little Nora.

"Er - hi, Nora. Do you want some lunch?"

Nora stared up and up and up into the face of cousin Hank. "Hello. I am Nora." She blinked several times. Mouth a straight line. Her little fists behind her back, locked together. "I would enjoy some lunch, yes. I enjoy sushi." She walked into the kitchen and found the menu that was in a compartment next to the refrigerator. She filed through the various menus and found what she was looking for and took it back to Hank. "Here is the sufficient menu for the food i like." She held it out to him, just standing there waiting for him to take it.

Hank reached down, practically doubled over, and took the menu from Nora.
"Oh. I was going to make you something, but we can order out. Would you rather we make it, or do you want me to call," Hank looked at the menu. "the Three Jolly Luck Sushi Bar and Fish Take-Away and order something?"

Hank didn't remember being that small as a toddler. His cousin was teeny tiny. Then again, he probably hadn't been. He'd always been pretty big. She also spoke like a computer, but then, when he got upset he hulked out and suddenly appeared like a tattooed brute, so he wasn't the one to be picking at other's mannerisms.

"If it matters, I'm very good at cookery, so I think I'll be able to prepare your sushi to your satisfaction."

Nora stared at Hank, squinting through her little eye lids. Evaluating his suggestions of "making her sushi". She stared at him a little harder, her eyes flicked between him and the menu. "Do you think you can construct a Philadelphia Sushi roll to my satisfaction?" She rocked on her feet a bit, she was nervous about accepting food made by someone she did not really know very well. Even if he was her "cousin", whatever that was. She went over to the piano stool and sat on it. Evaluating Hank from a distance.

"Yes, Nora, I think I got it. Seaweed, sushi rice, smoked salmon, cream cheese, and avacado. Or cucumber if you prefer. We just have to make sure you guys have the ingredients around. Or go get them if you don't. And I promise I wash my hands and everything."

Hank liked making sushi; it was easy and didn't require the stove most times. He didn't want to actually cook a lot in his Aunt Hunts's house, as he'd probably overheat and he thought that would be awkward.

"Our other cousins think that I'm a pretty good cook, so I'm sure I can make a Philadelphia roll to your satisfaction. Or we can order out."

Hank didn't follow her over. He figured if she wanted to keep her distance, she could keep her distance. He didn't like to be crowded either.

Nora got off her stool by the piano and came into the kitchen. She did not want Hank rummaging through the care givers kitchen and messing the order up that she had so carefully placed everything in. Nora walked in a straight line to the fridge, opened it, and began digging through the drawers and shelves carefully. She opened a drawer on the bottom shelf of the stainless steel cooling unit and dove in head first. "You may find the cucumbers in here. There should be avocados in the refrigerator as well. We do have smoked salmon and cream cheese." Her little legs were sticking up in the air. She pulled it all out of the fridge and sat it on one of the breakfast stools, being as she could not reach the counter tops. Hank bent over and picked off of the stool, placing it on the counter as she pulled it out of the fridge. "This is seaweed. The rice is in the pantry. I shall fetch it." She shut the refrigerator and went into the pantry for the rice. She brought it out and placed it on the stool, where Hank immediately placed it on the counter top. How useful it will be one day to be tall. Nora thought, as she scrambled up onto the breakfast stool to await her lunch.

Hank decided he shouldn't just dig through the cupboards to find what he needed. Nora seemed kind of controlling over the kitchen. "Um, I'm going to need some rice vinegar, a pot, a bamboo sheet, a few sharp knives, as well. Do you want to show me where they are?"

Luckily, sushi was easy once you had all of the ingredients, but Hank was more worried about what would happen after lunch. She didn't seem like the kind of girl that would want to play or anything. Maybe he could take her to the park?

"You should be able to acquire some rice vinegar in the pantry to the left and the sufficient pot may be found beneath the propane powered range top stove on the piece of kitchen surface displayed in the middle of the kitchen. I believe the care taker refers to it as n 'island'. Bamboo sheets can be found in the pantry as well, and some sharp implements may be found on the magnetic strip by the refrigeration device." Nora said while blinking once, twice, thrice. She sighed when she was finished and rested her hands in her lap. "I hope you find everything you need." She said this as though, if Hank did not find everything he needed surely he would perish and the world itself would collapse in on itself.

As Hank started rummaging and collecting the last of his ingredients, he started talking at her.
"Why do you call your mom the caretaker?"
Water in the pot, rice in the pot, time to steam the rice.
"I mean, I call my mom Metz, but all of our cousins call their moms mom."
Water boiling, time to start slicing so everything would be ready once the rice was done.
Hank concentrated on cutting up the ingredients as he waited for Nora's reply.

Nora sighed. "She is my care taker. Not my mother. My mother, i do not know what, or who, she is. All i know is that Hunts is my care taker, and she is fine with me not referring to her as 'Mother'. That means shes not old apparently. Although names have nothing to do with age." Nora blinked and petted Bronnson who sat on her lap. She looked like a little evil overlord. "Everyone calls their Mom's mom. That is nice. I suppose i do have that luxury." She continued to pet Bronnson who stared infinitely through Hank, much the same way as Nora did, most of the time.

"I guess you're right if you only want to use "mother" as the person that carried you or gave you an egg, in which case you have no mother cause that's not really how kids like us work, as I understand it. There's a lot more hocus pocus to first line metas then for regular kids. But word's aren't like that, they can bend a lot of different ways."

Hank removed the cooked rice, and added the rice vinegar to mix and fluff for the rice, then started puttering about getting everything ready to go for the roll once the rice was cooled.

"What do you want to do after you eat lunch? Aunt Hunts didn't tell me if you had a schedule or anything."

"Words cannot bend." Nora stated. "words are what they are; perhaps, they may have different meanings at one given time. However, they cannot, and never will, bend. Bending is for things with a physical presence." She squinted and went over to the large bay window. Her tiny hands clasped behind her back, she stared out the window. "After lunch, i could show you my theorems, or we could go to the park. I have not been on a swing in some considerable time. I have recently heard of some 'whirly turny things' which sound...enjoyable." She continued to stare out the window and continued to wait patiently for her lunch. The cat coiled his way around her small legs. She didn't move.

"I know they don't really bend, Nora; it's just an expression. An example, in fact, of a word having a different meaning." Hank rolled his eyes a little. She was a smart kid, but even more serious then he had been. And that was saying something.

Hank took the cooled rice and started to assemble the philadelphia roll for Nora, finished wrapping it and served her lunch up with soy sauce. "Do you want some water or juice or anything?"

"I would like some juice." Nora hopped down off the barstool she was seated on and walked over to the refrigerator. She opened the door and pulled out a juice box that was on the lower shelf. The door shut, seemingly all on its own due to Nora's short stature, she went over to her little backpack and pulled out a small blue and yellow book. She then came back to her seat and scrambled up on it. Most unladylike...She thought to herself as she began to consume her Philadelphia roll and flip through her calculations and theorems notebook while she ate her sushi.
