Shade was moving faster than the wind.
At least, that was what it felt like to the toddler as he rushed through the crowded streets of Durem, laughing as if he were doing something that regular people didn't do every day. He paid no mind to the fact that his guardian was currently trying to catch up to him, yelling and begging for him to come back to her - all that mattered was the fact that he was running.
And it was bloody well FUN.
The toddler squealed with delight, ducking through the legs of a woman with a large skirt and earning a shocked shriek in response. The boy didn't seem to care though as he scurried down the sidewalk, bolting around a corner. It was then that his run was brought to a sudden and abrupt stop. That stop being caused by the legs of some person. The young impling slammed into the limbs and let out a yelp of pain, stumbling back a few steps. For a moment, he stared in shock, not registering what had just happened - then, he seemed to realize that his face was stinging, and began to wail loudly. It seemed as though he wasn't having much fun anymore suddenly.

Kai hadn't been expecting to be bowled over by a baby today. No, he'd been expecting to do a little shopping, maybe buy his landlady something nice for her birthday so she'd be less inclined to kick him out, and if he had enough money, grab something for lunch at that cafe down the street.
But, no. Here he was, trying to keep his balance, and not topple over onto the baby that had slammed into him like a runaway freight train. He wasn't very big, and he couldn't have been walking for long. But he certainly packed a punch. He hissed, and was looking around for whoever OWNED the little thing, when it started to cry.
"Ah! No, shh, it's okay. You're alright!" He said, quickly scooping him up and rocking him. "See? No harm done! You're alright. PLEASE stop crying...!' He begged, bouncing him on his hip. He didn't need their guardian, or that cop on the corner, to think he'd done something to make this kid cry!

Unfortunately for the young man, Shade didn't look as though he were going to stop crying any time soon - this may have been the combination of his stinging face and the fact that he'd just realized that he couldn't see Megg anymore. Luckily for him, the young woman in person soon made an appearance as the young man began bouncing Shade on his knee, and immediately reached out to pluck the bawling child from his hands.
"I am SO sorry!" she said, eyes wide as she began bouncing the baby in her arms. "He got away from me while I was putting my bag on." Megg gave he young man a sheepish look before she turned her gaze to the fussy infant in her arms, rocking him gently in an attempt to calm him. "Shhh, shhh, you're okay; not so fun anymore, eh?" Shade whimpered and sniffled, but seemed to be calming down as Megg spoke to him.
"Sno'e..." The baby whined, looking up at Megg with his big, golden eyes. "Wan' Sno'e?" The young woman seemed to know who 'Sno'e' was, as she quickly produced a bright blue elephant, which Shade began to cuddle as soon as he laid eyes on it. Once she was certain that he wasn't going to start screaming bloody murder again, Megg looked back to the young man that Shade had crashed into, a embarrassed look still on her face.
"S-Sorry again. Are you okay? He didn't knock you over, did he?" Really, Shade had become such a handful since he'd started learning to walk. How was it that babies were so fast? Their legs weren't even that long! It was ridiculous!

Kai was surprised to see a rather pretty young woman run up to take the baby-thing away from him, who she quickly calmed in her arms, and coerced into silence with a bright blue elephant. Certainly, it was the strangest thing he'd seen all day. It took a moment for him to realize that she was talking to him, and when he did realize it, it took a moment more for his brain to catch up to what was being said, and the fact that he needed to respond.
"Oh! No, he didn't knock me down." He threw her a grin, patting his leg. "Almost, but no. I'm sure he left a nice bruise, though. Felt more like a cinderblock than a baby head. Don't worry about it." He grinned again. "Babies are a handful. You should probably keep a better eye on 'im, though. I remember when my landlady's kid started walking. Hell on legs, that was. And surprisingly fast..." He frowned, then laughed, and shook his head.
"So, no harm done. I'm just glad I caught him. He probably would have kept going for hours had I not."

He was cute; Megg noticed this, now that she got a good look at the teenager in front of her. Dark hair that was pulled back into a ponytail, piercing blue eyes, handsome face...not a bad looker at all, really. She didn't really have much experience when it came to picking men out, but even she could say that this guy was pretty freaking attractive. Perhaps she shouldn't have been paying attention to that, but she really couldn't help it.
"Well, I'm still sorry." Perhaps this guy didn't want her to 'worry about it', but she still couldn't help but feel guilty - Shade wouldn't have slammed into him if he hadn't gotten away from her. At his next comment, Megg chuckled a little, adjusting the impling in her arms. "Oh, don't I know...I can't take my eyes off of him for a second." She gave him a bit of a smile. "Thank you. I might've really gotten hurt if you hadn't."
"Mama? Mama, 'm 'ungry..." Shade whined up at the brunette, and she looked down at the pouting child. Since he'd begun talking, Megg had grown quite used to the little boy referring to her as 'Mama', and rarely noticed the looks that people gave her when Shade called her that - it may have looked strange to them, but she WAS the closest thing that he had to an actual mother, so why deprive him of such a relationship. "Wan' food!"
"Okay, okay, we'll get food." Megg grinned at her charge, then turned her gaze back to the young man before her. "Uh, are you busy? If not, maybe you could have lunch with us...I'd like to thank you properly." She wouldn't particularly mind hanging around the cute guy either - besides, she had Nigel's debit card again.

Lunch? Like Kai was one to turn down food. And, it solved the issue of maybe not having enough money to actually get some. Though, that did rise a question...
"Are you sure? I mean, you don't need to pay for me, but I'd love to have lunch with you two...." He smiled at the young woman in front of him. "I'm sorry, but you never did say your name. I'm Kai." He would have offered his hand, but hers seemed a bit full at the moment. "And you two are...?"
He did find it strange that such an odd looking creature referred to such a young girl as 'mama', but he really wasn't one to judge of odd happenings. All things considered, he was currently playing papa to a pack of half wolf huskies that had been abandoned up near his family camp. Chief, Mistress, and Bo lead his ragtag pack, as the oldest of them all, and Patch, Dolly, Sev, and Stu were the rolly polly puppies of the group. They seemed to have adopted him as their 'alpha male'. Or, so said the local vet. Much like a baby bird could imprint on a human, these dogs had 'imprinted' upon him. So, he couldn't say much about strange. He was the leader of a dog pack. Sort of.

Megg grinned and nodded in affirmation. "Oh yeah, I'm totally sure! Really, I'll pay!" She was quite insistent on it - she really did want to thank him, and what better way to do it than by buying him lunch? She'd learned from a living with Nigel that food was one of the best ways to please a man, and buying lunch wouldn't be that big of a deal. Especially since her foster father would be paying for it. The redheaded mage really did need to learn to hide his wallet.
"Oh, I'm sorry; that was rude of me." Megg gave the young man - Kai, as he was apparently called - a sheepish look before responding. "This is Shade, and my name's Meggie. It's nice to meet you, Kai." She smiled before looking to the impling in her arms. "Say hello to Kai, Shade."
"Hi..." The black-furred impling gave the young man a shy wave from his spot in Megg's arms, his arms still wrapped tightly around his precious stuffed elephant. It was like the thing was glued to his hands or something! Megg grinned down at her young charge before looking back to Kai again, gesturing for the young man to follow her.
"I know a little cafe just down the street - maybe we could go there?" The young woman had been planning on heading there with Shade anyway, so what was one extra person? It would be nice to have some company that was her own age anyway.

"If you're sure, then." Kai chuckled, slipping his hands into his pockets and looking down at Shade as he was introduced. "Well, hello there." He waved a bit, before nodding at the girl, Meggie. He wondered how she had come to have the kid. He couldn't have been hers, could he? It would take a very strange birth defect to do that to someone. He'd never seen anything like it. He was kind of cute, though, in a weird...alien-demon, sort of way.
"You mean Nibblers?" He asked, grinning at her and nodding again. "Yeah. Their food is pretty good. After you, then." He smiled, extending a hand to gesture that she should go before him.

Megg could guess what questions Kai had swimming around in his head - they were probably the same questions that everyone else got. 'He couldn't have been hers, right' or 'How could she have gotten that kid'. She'd grown quite used to getting those questioning looks from people, and could normally ignore them. They were pretty fair questions anyway. Most girls her age didn't have babies, much less fuzzy ones. Perhaps this was why she wasn't bothered by the look.
"That's the one, yeah." Megg smiled as she began walking after Kai had gestured before looking back at the young man. "Do you live close by here?" In her arms, Shade squirmed about, clearly wanting to be let down again; she wasn't about to put him down though. Not until they were in the cafe, where she could keep an eye on him. She didn't need him taking off down the sidewalk again - he could have seriously gotten hurt! "I don't think I've seen you around before."

"Actually, yeah. I do. Just a few blocks down, above Garcia's Cleaners? The old dry cleaning place. Despite what people think, it's still open. The owner is my landlady. A tiny bit loony, but she's sweet." He shrugged, grinning. "And, she doesn't mind the dogs. I'm actually surprised you haven't seen me walking them." His grin turned sheepish, and he scratched the back of his head. "It's...actually how a lot of people know me. The 'dog guy'." He could hardly be missed, after all, what with trying to reign in seven dogs on tangled leashes.
"Do you live around here? Also?" He opened the door for her as they reached it, stepping out of the way so she could walk inside.

"Garcia's Cleaners? Oh, I know where that is!" Megg grinned upon realizing that she knew where it was that Kai lived. She'd passed by it a few times during the trips to the store that she sometimes took with Kali and the babies, though she'd never really stopped to take a good look at it - they didn't have much use for a cleaners, after all. The mansion had plenty of appliances for them to use, not to mention magic if those weren't available for whatever reason. "You have dogs? What kind?" The brunette was genuinely curious - she and Nigel had never owned any pets, but she'd always wanted one. The redheaded mage hadn't wanted any around though, lest they ruin one of his experiments. It was one of those things that sucked about living with him - other than the fact that he tended to be a complete a*****e, anyway. "I don't get out much." The girl smiled at him as she adjusted Shade in her arms. "That's probably why." She didn't exactly have a huge social calender, after all - Kali was the only person her age that she normally hung out with on a regular basis, after all.
"Yeah, pretty close." Megg slipped through the door as Kai held it open for her and flashed him a thankful smile before pointing out the window of the cafe. "See that hill over there? I live in the house just up there." The only building on that hill was Zak's mansion, so it wouldn't be hard to see - who could miss the big, cliche mansion on the hill? After pointing it out, Megg went over to take a seat at one of the table, managing to worm her way past all the people - it certainly was busy today. She thought about fetching a baby chair for Shade, but then decided that it might be best to just have him sit in her lap for now - it would take forever to maneuver a baby seat over here. "Get whatever you'd like." she said with a grin, already flipping through the menu.

"I, uh...well, they're half husky. Half wolf." He opened the menu, sitting across from her. "There's seven of them. Chief, Mistress, and Bo are the eldest. Patch, Sev, Stu, and Dolly are the pups...I found them a while ago, up at camp. They're kinda...attached to me." He chose a burger, and ordered it when a very flustered waitress came, hiding his unease at the fact that she came from the Mansion. There were a lot of rumors around the city about what was up there. Ghosts. An asylum. He'd seen people going up there recently, though.
Turned out, people lived there. H-uh. And they seemed like normal people. Well, except for the fuzzy baby, but...
"So...you...live in that mansion?" He asked tentatively, leaning back in his chair. "What, uh...exactly, happens, up there?"

"Really? That's pretty cool." Megg grinned, suddenly feeling a little envious. "I've never been allowed to have pets before. My Dad said that they'd make too much of a mess." And yet Nigel had handed her off a fuzzy baby - go figure. When the waitress came over, Megg ordered herself some chicken fingers and two orders of fries - one for herself, and a smaller one for Shade. "Sounds pretty cute - and they all live in your apartment with you? Must be crowded."
Megg quickly caught onto the hesitation in Kai's voice as he asked about the mansion - if she was bothered by it, she didn't let it show. The brunette was quite accustomed to receiving that kind of tone from people regarding her home, no matter where she lived. Before living in the mansion, she and Nigel had lived in what had been considered to be the 'creepy house' by her school - the dark, gloomy looking house that had looked like it needed more work done on it than was worth it, with a few dead trees in the yard. Peeling paint, broken porch steps - yeah, it hadn't been pretty. Now, the INSIDE of the house had been clean and tidy, but the outside? Well, it had been less than desirable. The fact that Megg had never been allowed to have other kids over didn't much help either. Apparently, this had been part of a ploy on Nigel's part to make people want to stay away. It had worked quite well, really. Perhaps that was why Megg had become so good at keeping herself entertained. She had Kali at the mansion now at least, but when she was doing her training, she was usually left alone with Shade again - it got kind of lonely.
"Not much; I mostly look after Shade and play video games, and my Dad and his business partner are scientists, so they do their work in the basement." She paused for a moment and gave Kai a knowing smile. "Don't worry - they only dissect human remains every two weeks or so." She was joking, of course.

"They do make a mess. AND they're expensive. And yes, it's crowded." He grinned. "But I wouldn't have it any either way." He shook his head, and chuckled, looking up as Megg spoke again. Scientists? In the basement, of a creepy mansion? And... Human remains? "A...heh..." He coughed, trying to cover his nervous laugh. "You're...joking, right?" He flushed, embarrassed that he had to ask. But he would sleep better knowing that she was kidding about the human experiments.
