I really didn't get into Beast Wars until the second season. I managed to get all three seasons on DVD and enjoyed them a lot. Beast Machines was done horribly. Everything from the orange blobs explosions to the ending was just wrong.

I was never able to see Beast Machines (it never screened over here on commercial television...), but while I seriously detested it at first, Beast Wars grew on me by the second series. It was a great show, whether or not you're of the personal belief that it is a suitable successor to its G1 predecessor.

The timeline was a bit awkward, but if nothing else, they showed homage to the G1 enough to grab my attention. Surely that is worth making the series watchable. To me at least . . . sweatdrop
Personally, I liked the way the moral ambiguity was handled . . . that made for a better dramatic show. The whole organic core of Cybertron and the living/tech war was a huge downer for me though. Visuals can be ascribed to the animation style, not so much the writing in my book.

Most defintely, and well put, mate. There are plenty of arguments out there supporting the whole notion of a techno-organic Cybertron, but they're all folly as far as I'm concerned. But the ambiguous nature of the storytelling, the blurring of the line btween that which could be percieved as a simple good verses evil scenario, made for a wonderfully dramatic presentation. It's just a pity that the actual implementation of which wasn't of a superior nature...

I thought it took a lot of balls to do what the Beast Machines writer, Bob Skir did, and I believe that no matter what he did to the mythos, he didn't deserve death threats.
I never saw the complete series, including the ending. However, I thought it was interesting, and it did in fact draw from a great deal of the G1 Cartoon mythos. The Key to Vector Sigma, the Plasma Energy Chamber key, and in fact the idea of organic parts of Cybertron itself all were used in the G1 cartoon.
I agree, the 'shades of gray' in Beast Machines made it an intriguing character study if nothing else, and I enjoyed the plot twists - Thrust turning out to be Waspinator, Rhinox being Tankor.
As far as the animation goes, I don't really recall the orange blob explosions, because it's been several years, but I remember only really liking the design for Optimus Primal. I thought the others all looked rather...well, odd. Especially Cheetor. He looked like you could have snapped his legs in two with your hand. And Nightscream's hair annoyed me.

Nightscream . . . *violent shudder* I do admit that the Maximal designs were somewhat odd. Obviously they went for a speed theme with Cheetor's form. I would have thought Blackarachnia to have more of a stealthy form, though. She was just "Look at my cyber sluttiness!!!"
My favourite Maximal, however, has to be Silverbolt. His upgrade was actually well done in my opinion. The 'robot' mode has elements of oriental influence with his topknot, and the throwing daggar/feathers were a lovely touch.
Unfortunately, with the unique forms the maximals had in BM, the toys invariable sucked. Sure, there are a few that really shine, like Hammerstrike (which I renamed 'Raziel' for his emaciated robot mode), but if it wasn't vehicon, it was not a good thing for me.
The whole Tankorr/Rhinox thing is one of my highlights. Right behind Megs not just dominating the Maximals as he could have. Instead, he spent an interestingly large amount of time trying to convert the survivors. Telling them how he sees things. The one episode where he provided Rattrap with weapons in exchange for protection for one night is a prime example. (excuse the pun)
"Oh, I'm sorry . . . were you happier when my vocabulary was limited to Tankorr SMASH!!!" - Tankorr after Rhinox's awakening

Yeah, the toys were a mixed bag as far as Beast Machines went... not sure how I feel about many of them. The Vehicons were so mechanical in nature, many of them tended to remind me more of deluxe 'Machine Men' (Go-Bots) than Transformers... and the naming convention never worked for me, I must say. I really liked Night Viper, myself. And Snarl was also cool (if only they'd initially gone with his Universe colours...).

I really must still see Beast Machines even if it won't be that good. I loved Beast Wars and have the whole DVD sets, but it would be nice to see the story fully played out in BM. They have plenty of information on this page of the Wikapedia. There's even more links to other TF related info, like BW Megatron and such, etc etc.

I still lament the cancellation of Transtech, which could have really set things right once again in the extended G1 universe. sad Stupid RiD... stare

I don't really consider BM to be a continuation of BW anymore than I consider any series from RiD and beyond to be good transformers series.
Sorry, but I DID watch it, and every episode seemed to fill me with anger and malice, even though I kept watching.
It completely destroyed everything that BW had worked up to, in my opinion.

I wish BM was not a continuation of BW even thou they made it out to be one. They did leave a lot of stuff unanswered between the two.
