Alice plucked at the strings of her bass guitar, tuning it so it sounded just right. "There it is," she said quietly as she plucked one of the strings, which let out a lovely note. The room was empty, which was a nice change of pace, compared to its usual hectic atmosphere.

If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk...

Trailing behind the girl, she pondered what she'd said earlier in the room (While memorizing the way from the dorm to the band room). 'What made you want to march the Euph? Cause you arent the most...' Well, it's not my fault I'm short and non-athletic. She'd never admit that keeping the damned instrument up had always been challenging for her. Well, at least she had gym this semester. Maybe she could build up some muscles. "So... what do you march?"

...but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

((Hehehe I'm glad we don't do marching at my school. I prolly wouldn't be able to hold up the baritone for the entire time))

~Don't make me...~
User ImagePepe ignored the question, that is, until they entered the school's humble band room. Then she pointed at the wall to the left of them, where ten sousaphones were hung on the wall. "Le sousaphone." Though, the instrument was about the same size as her, so maybe what she had said earlier about the whole euph thing was a bit...um...still not sure what to call it. "But I also play bass guitar." Almost as if reading Karen's mind about the whole muscle thing, Pepe said "Though, I could march euph if I wanted to. Last year, the section leader of the baris and euphs made them do what he called fun-ups after every rehearsal. They let me join in too! Jedi..." Wait, does she know who he is?...hm... "ah, that is, the section leader this year, said he might do that too." She smiled "I hope he does! I don't want to lose my six-pack." she said, putting air quotes around six-pack. She had abs, but they weren't a six-pack exactly.

(( I can. Erik [our section leader] would make the weaker members of the section [aka me and Jorge] put a 2 lb weight on our horns, making it the equivalent of the euph in weight...and it was on the bell [bell heavy horn = kill me now!] And he'd make us do fun-ups. ))

Alice looked at the two girls enter, chatting. She smiled a little then turned her attention back to her guitar. She wanted to make sure it sounded perfect for practice. Alice always stood on the side lines, hooked up to an amp when everyone else marched so she had always felt excluded from her brass wielding companions.

Heaving a sigh, Ria stepped into the band room and dropped her bag near the mallet instruments. Goddamn I must be carrying a bloody dead body in this wretched thing, she thought to herself. This girl came prepared; being pit captain is serious business for her. Mark, the pit instructor, had her print out some warm ups for the whole pit and told her to gather up all the new pitsters to see who's "good enough" to handle being treated like a drum corps-level front ensemble. So what was all that extra weight if she simply kept papers in her bag? Let's leave that to your imagination. While stretching out her arms, she noticed a girl tuning a bass guitar near the percussion section. Hmm a bassist. . .there seems to be a lot of those crawling around. Let's see if she's any good. Ria walked over to the girl and tipped her Slayer baseball cap to her. "Howdy. My name's Ria Mordecai and I'll be your pit captain for the season. I assume you're one of my new members."

Alice looked up at the girl, her attention taken away from her instrument. She smiled, nodding. "I'm Alice. Alice O'Hara," she said, holding out her hand. "It's nice to meet you, Ria." Alice was happy to meet her pit captain but also nervous, hoping the girl liked her and her playing.

Ria took the hand with a smile and shook it. "Charmed! My timing is impeccable actually." Before finishing her thought, she reached around and grabbed her bag. Unzipping the cloth sarcophagus, she took out some sheet music. "Your parts are one of the only ones Mark gave me. . ." She paused. "I actually haven't heard your playing yet! Hmm. . ." Ria cocked her head and contemplated for a bit. "Could you play something for me?" She knew that she was putting Alice on the spot, but her instructor was expecting her to know what level of playing the new pitsters were at. She had a good feeling about Alice, and she sat there hoping her instincts would be proven right.

~Don't make me...~
User ImagePepe heard a familiar voice. One that belonged to a very talented, and somewhat abusive -in more ones than one- Ria. It seemed like she was busy at the time being, but the moment she wasn't, look out. Pepe's roommate seemed awful quiet. She hoped that she wasn't gonna be a total bummer. If so, then...Pepe really didn't know what she was going to do.

Looking around, she noticed that a few chairs were off the chair rack. If anyone that knew her well heard the gears grinding in her head, they'd know that an idea was brewing up in that head of hers. But, she would not execute the quickly thought up plan, that is, until she found someone to assist her. Let's just say, it wasn't a one man job. For now...she would wait.

Now that she had used up most of her creative juices, she wanted to chill. Looking around, once more, Pepe noticed that one of the horn lockers was without a lock. The horn lockers were the same size as the baritone lockers: Pepe size. Opening it, she jumped inside, and sat with her back leaning against the left side of the locker, her legs up against her flat and undeveloped chest. She probably could have just sat on a chair, but what fun was that?

Alice nodded, smiling. She was nervous to perform on the spot, but knew it was essential for Ria to know her skill level. Alice just hoped she wouldn't disappoint. Making sure her bass was tuned, Alice positioned her hands and began playing. Her fingers had been strengthened through years of practice and the once painful movements were second nature. Alice looked at the sheet music and began to play the notes. She lucked out, having played this song before. It seemed that Alice went into an altered state of consciousness as her expression grew deep. A small smile grew across her face as she played the music.

Ria smiled. "Praise the lord we have a bassist who can tune and actually play." Satisfied, she took out the music her instructor gave her. "Here's your part for the intro. It may not look like much, but believe me it is REALLY important. You'll see when we get the whole pit together and start playing it." Looking at the clock, she realized that practice was going to start soon. Shoot, I should tell people to get the hell out, she thought. "Hey Alice, could you start putting chairs away and set some stuff up? I'm going to start kicking people out of the band room." She paused. "Set up the mallet instruments first since your bass is already pretty much done."

Pepe

Hearing the pit captain's words, Pepe stuck out her tongue. "Dammit Ria! I just got in here!" Regardless of her laziness, she crawled back out of the locker, and dusted herself off. "You want me to go around and let everyone know? You know, since band draws in retards and mentally challenged people like honey attracts flies..." It was true...sort of. Shoot, there was this one guy last year, during band camp, where if you asked him the time, he'd always either say 9 o'clock, 1 o'clock, or 3 o'clock, depending what the actual time was. And people believed him. It was always a knee-slapper. Sigh, good times...

Hearing a very familiar voice, Ria turned around. "Sorry to interrupt your happy-locker-me time Pepe." She stuck her tongue out at the sousaphone player. "It would be great if you kick out all of the idiots first. I can't stand looking at them. Remember the last time I had to kick morons out of the band room?" Long story short, it ended with them crying and a scolding from Belski about being "too mean." He should be scolding them for being wussy dumbasses instead, she thought to herself.

Pepe nodded. "Sure thing" she said. She remembered all too well the last time. She was pretty sure Ria hadscarred some of them for life. "Yes, that would be a bad thing to repeat. I heard they had to put one of two of your quote unquote victims in a padded cell for a bit." Walking around, she shoo'd people from out behind the lockers, and even the band moms' closet, aka the closet of Narnia, as some of them had dubbed it. When she was sure she had gotten rid of them all...cept her roommate, she said "All clear!" Then, she went up behind her roomie, and pushed her out the door, and said "I'm pretty sure winds are gonna meet at the tree of life" she paused to point at the large tree just outside of the band room. "So in other words, stay here unless I come back for you" And with that, Pepe took off so that she could let everyone else know about blah blah blah. What was blah blah blah? Don't ask me, I have no idea.

Ria smiled. "Grazie darling." She walked over to the band closet, shooed some underclassmen out of the way, and began searching for the mixer and sub. "s**t Mark needs to reconfigure everything," she muttered to herself. Then she paused. Staring at the sound board on the counter, she had a sudden revelation. "WHERE THE HELL IS MY SYNTH PLAYER?!"
