Like all of the Weyrlings Mercy had been given shifts in the new greenhouse, so very much was riding on this endeavor that she was somewhat nervous about trying. I mean what if she killed all of the precious little plants she was given to work with? She'd never really been much good at making things grow... 'You will do fine mine, you listened to all the instructions' Aerith reminded her confidently.
'That's true..' Mercy replied mentally to the little while she'd left in her weyr to sleep while she worked 'Now be good and get some rest' She told her as she arrived at the transplanting station, eying the tools rather warily for a few moments before she started to gather up what she would need.

Wykla wasn't sure at first if she wanted to show up for the greenhouse effort. The original had been bad enough. She got dirty and her hair just felt awful after. Only Kameth's insistence that she needed to do it resulted in her showing up.
Seeing a familiar face, Wykla headed over to Mercy. "You here too?" Clearly, but she wasn't sure what else to say. The job was clear enough.

Mercy was glad to see someone she knew come in - at least she'd have someone she liked around to chat with while she worked. "Yep, I guess they have us all taking turns huh?' she remarked 'I've never been all that great with growing things though" She admitted as she peered at the sample she was supposed to be transplanting.
"And this stuff is just so dratted important it's making me nervous"

Wykla picked up her assigned plant. It didn't look like it was doing very well. She wondered if the riders took the plants between, perhaps that was why they were having so much trouble. It would be better to cover them and fly them straight to the Weyr.
"Sure, you can't see the Weyrwoman or Weyrleader down here getting their hands dirty can you?" She sounded rather scornful. "Besides if anything goes wrong then they can blame it on us." Wykla assumed that was why they were letting kids like herself, even if she was a dragonrider in training, to be potting plants. It really should be the farmer folks doing this.

"I take it your not to happy to be doing this" Mercy remarked as she took in her friends scornful remark. She didn't really think the weyrleaders would blame them if things went wrong - I mean they had to know by now that the plants were fickle and the greenhouses would supposedly help..though the'd yet to really prove themselves. they looked neat...but look's didn't always mean all that much.
Still none of that really seemed like the sort of thing to share with Wykla - who was so obviously not happy to be doing this. "But look on the bright side...if we manage to do this well then we can say we had an actual hand in helping the future dragons right? That has to count or something" She stated, hoping to point out the more optimistic viewpoint as she gently picked up her plant.

"No, not really." Wykla admitted. "Playing in the dirt like this has never been a favorite past time for me. It gets under my nails and in my hair. Ugh." She prodded a hole in the dirt un-enthusiastically. The plant certainly didn't look all that well. Should she plant it deeper to help support it?
The girl paused to consider her friend's statement. She did have a valid point there. This whole thing was for the dragons; wasn't it? Wykla picked up her plant a little more gently than she normally would have. She examined it closely for bugs or stuff.
"Maybe, but I still think they would have been better off getting the farmers to do this. They know plants." Wykla knew how to eat them, not grow them. She was slightly worried that she'd hurt the plant somehow in her ignorance.

Mercy laughed "It's not exactly my favorite thing in the world either" She confessed "Though I expect the boys don't care nearly as much" recalling in her youth how the hold boys had never minded getting dirty in their play. She doubted that tendency changed much as they grew.
Pressing her own hole into the little cup pot things they were supposed to place the plants into she put her weed into it and packed some dirt around it. It flopped about in a rather pathetic fashion but maybe it was just in need of some watering?
"I wonder why they don't ask farmers to help? I guess they want to keep it to the Weyr, maybe they haven't told everyone about the problem. Don't want to scare everyone or something?" Mercy really didn't have any idea and Wykla had brought up a valid point. "Guess we'll just have to trust that the know what their doing"

If the pair were to look around, they would notice that, a little way down from where they were working, three plants had managed to tip over and were now floating on their sides in the fertilizer-laced water; somebody's hard work will go to waste if they aren't righted soon!

Wykla shared a grin with Mercy. "Well boys will be boys I guess." She'd often watched the weyrboys scuffing around and getting dirt all over themselves. Then again, there were things where nothing you did could save you from getting dirty. She knew from chore experience, and dragon tending she'd learned was also one of them.
Watching the other girl, Wykla attempted to imitate her the best she could. The plant did not want to cooperate. First all the roots wouldn't go in, then it flopped over as she tried to add dirt. She gritted her teeth as she struggled with it for several long minutes. Another reason not to do this. She didn't possess the patience to struggle with them.
"The only reason I could think of is because they're busy. Doing something else, or maybe farming the weed their way." Wykla tilted her head, "I thought the news was wide spread. If the farmers were asked to try and grow the weeds like we were, then they'd have to know."
An exasperated sigh escaped her when she finally got the plant to behave the way she wanted. Boreal had been much easier to train than this sharding thing. Giving herself a moment to calm down she took a look around the room. Her eyes scanning noticed an oddity. Level plants all lined up created a relatively flat expanse, but she noticed a notch.
"Hey, did some plants get moved over there?" She pointed with a dirty finger.
(o.o I hope I did that right. XD )

"There is much truth in that statement" Mercy agreed with a laugh, though honestly all the boys she'd met so far at the Weyr didn't seem all that bad , granted she hadn't met many of them, at least not long enough to form a lasting opinion anyways.
Her plan still looked a bit sad an pathetic..but most of the new samples did, Mercy supposed they were just one of those types which didn't like to be moved around - some of the herbs useful in medicine were like that though sadly she'd never explored that side of the medical fields to really know.
"I suppose so" Mercy shrugged, she didn't really know honestly how wide spread the news was - she had just been taking a stab in the dark about why they might not be helping here at the Weyr. "At least a farmcrafter to oversee the effort might have been nice I suppose..make sure we're not screwing it up or something"
Glancing in the direction Wykla was pointing Mercy furrowed her brow slightly before placing her own plant in its designated spot in the water "They shouldn't of been I don't think, unless those ones died or something and they took them out" She told her before heading in that direction to look "No...some of them fell over" She reported reaching in to right them again and hoping they hadn't already been ruined "Good spotting!"

Wykla was glad she was a girl. It had its advantages. She gave her myst weed plant a couple final adjustments before sticking it into the water. There, her chore was done. It was a relief. The young girl looked forward to going out and joining her dragon and flits in the sun.
"Mmmmmm, well I guess we fumble through on our own." Now that the torture was over, Wykla was glad she'd helped to plant. There was something satisfying, or maybe soothing, in watching the plants bobble there. "Glad its over. Thanks for working with me Mercy."
"If they're going to do this, they should be more careful." Wykla flushed a little as her friend complimented her. "Ah, it was just chance. Glad they didn't go to waste. I bet some dragonrider would have been furious to know his or her plants died of drowning." She brushed her hands off on her pants. A bath was definitely called for when she left.

The mystweed plants which had been so kindly righted bobbed around happily with water dripping from their leaves; it looked as though somebody else's hard work had been saved!

"Imagine so, I know i would be" Mercy agreed as she eyed the plants a final time to make sure they weren't going to tip over again before brushing the dirt from her hands and nodding "No problem - was certainly more enjoyable then doing it by myself" She told her with a smile before feeling Aerith stir in her sleep.
"And right on time I think - feels like Aerith is waking, she'll likely need some oiling or something" she remarked "And Sunny not far behind typically" she added as she rejoined Wykla. "Imagine I'll see you later then, maybe next time we can do something a bit more enjoyable"

She nodded, glad the chore was finally done. It did seem easier with company. A mental check with Kameth showed he was still asleep. Good, she had enough time to get clean herself.
"I'll look forward to that." Wykla grinned. "See you at dinner." The girl watched her friend head in one direction, before going her own way.
