I've been playing euphonium for a couple of years now. There's only one other Euphonium player and I feel like I've been relying on him to show me how to play the piece right/how to count and take the initiative. I can count some of the time, but I still find it difficult in some situations.
When we have playing tests, I can play just fine but that's months after we get the piece. I practice quite a bit but sometimes I can't because I can't count by myself that well; when the whole band plays I can figure it out but I don't want to rely on others as much as I am now.
I feel really bad because when our BD asked us to play this measure in a song I didn't because he didn't and we both got yelled at. I feel like I'm not just letting him down, but my BD and my whole band as well. I want to be self-reliant in band, but every time I try and play the right notes I screw up because he's not playing; so I stop playing.
I'm really aggravated at how I can't just take the initiative and play, but every time I try something goes wrong. I'm at a loss for how to fix this and could use some help.

I actually do the same thing as you do except people here i guess are nicer, but usually what I'll do is instead of like relying on them, I'll listen to rhythems, and practice it once I know what it sounds like myself. I try to rely on myself alot seeing as we have 7 clarinets, and i'm independent.
Probably what you should do is practice at home, or maybe even try to get in after school and practice them maybe.
