General InformationFull Name: Hadiya Junayd Nickname: Iya (like i-yah, even though her name is had-ee-yah) Name Meaning: Hadiya - leader, guide Junayd - small army Gender: Female Age: Twenty-five Faction: AphoticAppearanceHeight/Weight: Stands at 5'6" and weighs around a hundred and sixty pounds -most of that muscle. Skin: A dusky, almost tanned tone, freckles coating her nose and cheeks. Hair: Jet black, with hints of purple in it's glossy depths. The only feminine feature she doesn't actively try to hide, Iya keeps her hair long, almost to the middle of her back. When on duty, she pins it up in an elaborate style that helps to keep it from getting ripped out of her head. (can be shown down in her official art) Eyes: Violet Wings: Purple with a few spots of a much darker purple, bordering on black. Clothing: When on duty, Iya is of course restricted to the guard's uniform of mixed leather and lightweight plate parts - all charmed by those who specialize in such things who work at her guard station. These spells help protect her, but must be renewed every two days. When off duty, she is a little more casual in her dress, opting for baggy trousers and loose men's shirts - without the ruffles, thank you very much. She'll be having none of the nonsense. But I'd really love her to be in her 'dress uniform' that she wears on special occasions. Here's a ref for the look of the jacket - the colors though, should be black and dark purple with silver trim. Her pants would be well fitting and black, and she'd have on sturdy black leather boots. Other: While being fairly muscular is something she is proud of and doesn't try to hide, her curves are almost shameful to her. She binds her chest with bandages to try to keep her breasts less noticeable, and wears baggy pants when possible to keep the curves of her hips and buttocks less apparent.

Personal Information
Magical Abilities
Sharpen - A simple charm taught to all new recruits in their first week on the job, this keeps their blades sharp as can be. It must be cast everyday, or after a fight involving the weapon occurs; the charm is a little fragile, and having steel meet steel (or flesh) tends to damage it fairly quickly.
Air Shackles - Another spell that all guards are taught, this spell helps one to capture criminals. When the spell is channeled through a conduit (usually a sword, in the case of a guard), it creates temporary 'shackles' made of air. This can trip someone who is running away or keep a flight risk in check. However, this spell must be verbalized, and without the concentrated will of the caster, fades within moments. When being used on a flight risk, often one guard will hold the spell while another interrogates the subject. This spell is, however, a little hit and miss. Younger guards often have trouble mastering sending the spell to a specific place... and have been known, on occasion, to capture an upstanding citizen rather than a criminal.
Nonmagical Talents
Sword Play - Iya is fairly talented with a sword, considering she only picked it up in her late teen years. One sign that she will one day be one of the best is the fact that her torso does not move in such a way that it will reveal her movements. She currently studies under the Captain of the Guard at her station, learning to fully master the weapon.
Brawler - No stranger to fist fights, this girl can definitely take care of herself. When it comes to hand to hand, Iya needs no instructions. While she can and often does use simple brute force, she can also be a bit zen about the whole thing. Instead of directly hitting someone, she may use their own momentum against them and help them run into a wall, for example. She's very good at twisting arms, and has no compunctions about being rough with those she deems unsavory.
Natural Leader - Iya is a leader born; she knows how to play on others strengths and weaknesses, knows where someone will shine and where they will fall, making her a good choice to delegate roles for ambushes and the like. People can sense this about her, and many guards her own age or younger are almost under her spell. People want to be in her patrol squads, and when she isn't the one in charge, leaders of these will often ask her opinions.

Quirks
Socially inept, her leadership charisma fails her utterly when she is not at work. Most of the time, she can barely manage to keep her end of the conversation up. When faced with a handsome young man that seems to enjoy her company, she turns to a block of wood, unable to interact properly at all.
Iya also has a very simple pallet. Foods that are exotic will not sit well with her, disrupting her digestion. Complex foods with many flavors are also disliked, but only because she can never seem to understand them. Everything gets mixed up, and it's just a mess taste-wise. In addition, if something looks or smells gross, she usually can't eat it and will murmur a polite 'no thank you'. Because of this, she rarely dines out, preferring to make her own meals.
When she does dine out, she is incredibly obsessive; she rearranges the whole table, inspects silverware and glasses for the tiniest specks of dust, and will play with condiment containers and the like until they are set out in a visually appealing way. This means counting them, lining them up by size or shape or color, then sometimes making a pretty little pattern if there is enough variety. She barely manages to avoid doing this when she dines at someones house or goes to a party, exerting a good deal of will. Still... sometimes she'll find herself toying with things if she gets bored.
Personality
Lawful Good - Iya believes fiercely in upholding justice, and will go to any lengths to do so. The tricky thing about this is, of course, that the actual laws of a land might not enforce justice. She occassionally finds this confusing, and doesn't know where to turn. When her moral values conflict with the law, what will she do? This trait also makes her a bit of a zelot, trying to impose the 'correct' way of behaving on others. This is done, however, not because she wishes to control them, but rather because she wishes to help them be the best they can be.
Street Smart - while book educated as all children of her station are, that is not where Iya's intelligence lies. While she can read - and read well - she doesn't do it for pleasure. She doesn't know much about history or even magic, really; these things are insubstancial, and she sees no real reason to study them. However, when it comes down to practical knowledge that will help her survive and do her job well, she's a very attentive student.
Ambitious - She knows she can do something to help her city... and she's going to do it, noble blood or not. Iya aspires to become one of the top guards in the city; watch-commander is shooting low for her. No... she dreams of being a Lord Marshal, in charge of protecting the city from lawlessness from both external and internal factors. She firmly believes that if she puts her nose to the ground and works hard, busting her bum to prove that she is worth of the task, she will be given the responsibility of caring for her city.
Stoic - Not one to wear her emotions on her face, it is often difficult for others to guess what she is feeling... or that she's feeling anything at all. It is difficult for others to track this, since she rarely shows any emotion at all, but the more feelings are churning inside of her, the more blank she becomes. Even trusted friends rarely see her do more than smile. Laughter is a thing almost unheard of... unless she's with Baqi or her father, and them only. Then she becomes an expressive, fun person.
Protective - This started in prepubescence, and has continued ever since. Iya is not protective over one person in specific. Instead, she feels it is her duty to protect the people at large, especially those who cannot defend themselves. If she sees anyone - even someone she hates - being bullied or treated unfairly, she will defend that person. This trait is given to everyone equally; no one fairy brings it out in her more than the next.

History
Hadiya was born into a middle class family that already contained three male children... and there was another boy after her. While growing up, she was surrounded by a very masculine influence. Her mother tried, really she did... but showing an interest in dolls and frilly lacy things only got the poor girl teased by her brothers. So she tended to shun anything that could be considered 'girly', wanting to be one of the guys so her brothers would play with her. Her insistence that they 'follow the rules' and 'not cheat' often caused tension between herself and her siblings, especially when she decided to 'punish' one for doing so. She never went to mom and dad, oh no... she would carry out justice herself.
Because she had such a large family full of children, Iya didn't really feel the need to seek outside friendships. Even when she was sent to school, she didn't connect with other children her age - especially not girls. Girls were no fun at all. Of course, her habit of finding out everything that everyone was doing wrong and telling on them wasn't really making other children clamor to be her friend anyway. Teachers told her over and over again that tattling was wrong... but the young girl didn't seem to grasp the concept.
As she grew, however, Iya began to realize the difference between tiny infractions that would hurt no one but the one carrying them out, and those that needed to be rectified to protect others. Thus it was that she began to wage war on bullies; by age twelve, she was getting into more fights at school than she ever had at home. A few other students (all male) came under her banner, helping her try to end the dominance of a few particularly nasty children. These few became her friends, and many of them she still keeps in contact with.
At age fifteen, Hadiya found herself once more in a fight with one of the meanest bullies in her school. Unfortunately, both children took it a little too far, and were expelled; Hadiya with a broken arm and the boy with several cracked ribs and a shattered knee-cap. It was at this point that her parents decided they needed to do something about Hadiya's constant fighting and need to protect others. Her father appealed to a friend of his who was a guard, and the man agreed to take the girl under his wing.
Instead of returning to another school, Iya became something of a fixture at her district's guard house. She watched the guards in fascination, learning the ropes, better ways to fight, the language of the streets... all sorts of things. When she turned seventeen, the Captain of the Guard decided that she should be taught the way of the sword, since it seemed she would be joining their ranks. It was all so glamorous, so wonderful. Hadiya knew she'd found her place in the world, and that she would become one of the greatest guards the city had ever had.
On joining at age twenty-one, however, her dream turned to ashes in her mouth. She realized that guards were lax inside their own borders, not keeping the best watch they could. Things that shouldn't be allowed to slip by were, and guards were bribed left and right to ignore shady dealings. The people were not being defended, and injustice seethed all around her. For a while, she went about her task as though she were a zombie, going through the motions but feeling nothing.
One day however, a thought struck her. If she managed to reach a position of power... she could change things. She could remake the guards into what they should be, turn them into a force that would do the city proud. If she was worthy of the task, if she didn't falter, if she didn't shrink away from the work involved... she could do this. And so she set about her duty with renewed vigor. She now keeps files on every member of the guards she knows; this one is corrupt, that one is a defender of peace, this other one is lazy... she keeps her records as detailed as possible so that she will be able to one day pick out the worthy from the unworthy.
((This bio is still a work in progress. Wanting heavy crits here. XD ))
Relatives Najib Junayd - Najib is a good, solid man and a wonderful provider for his family. Working in the field of crafting, he owns a store that sells wands and staves to the general populace, overseeing several apprentices. Most of the time, he crafts perfectly ordinary things in the world of the fairies... but once in a while, he will splurge on the materials and energy needed to make a truly grand piece of work. These are offered to the upper-class commoners, and one was even purchased by a noble. Working these magics, however, drains him, and he will often be stuck in bed for weeks after.
Hadiya and her father get along rather well; she's always been something of a daddy's girl. When not on duty she will sometimes go to his workshop and visit, helping him with the non-magical elements of his crafting. She prefers his company over Nasira's, and will often spend time with him and only him.
Nasira Junayd - Nasira is an open, kind woman who does her best to take care of her rather large family. She never expected to have so many; both she and Najib were only children, so they thought they'd have only one as well... surprise surprise. Because her husband is affluent enough, she was able to stay home and care for the children, doing things for them, teaching them, kissing skinned knees and checking for monsters under the bed. She is very traditional, however, and believes that this is really the only acceptable position a woman should hold; family should come before all else. She is fairly good with charms, employing many small ones throughout her home to make life a little easier. Stronger charms, however, that would impact a living thing, are beyond her.
Hadiya and her mother definitely do not see eye to eye. The older woman is constantly nagging her daughter about getting married and settling down, and giving up the rough and tumble life of a guard. Iya loves her mother, she really does... but spending too much time with the woman drives her insane. She visits only rarely, going back home for dinner on special occasions.
Baqi Junayd - Baqi is a steady, reliable man. He doesn't move quick-silver fast, and it takes time for him to formulate his thoughts... but when he speaks, people listen. The man spends much of his time at his work, where he is a spellwriter; when given time, he can come up with wonderful things. Rush him though, and it ends up a mess. He has been courting the same woman for four years now; their engagement is likely impending.
As Baqi is six years older than Hadiya, they were able to rise above a good deal of squabbling and be friends fairly early in life. He is very fond of her, and tries to protect her even while she is out protecting the world. She loves him dearly as well - he is her favorite brother. His easy way of listening often leads her to pour out her troubles into his ear, and she usually walks away feeling better. She visits him when she can, occasionally staying at his house overnight.
Zayn Junayd - Zayn is the odd duck of the family. For years, he was 'all boy', rough housing and scrapping along with the rest. Then suddenly, in his teens, he decided that he would far rather be dressing in more... well... girly fashions. He took to lace and ribbons, adding them as decorations; occasionally, he even wears dresses, though this is usually not done in public. He announced that he would not be getting married to his childhood sweetheart, ever, as he had found that men where far better companions. This nearly gave his mother a heart attack. He has become the black sheep of the family; his mother hardly speaks to him, and he tends to be off doing his own thing most of the time. He is an entertainer, employing various little charms to add wonderful special effects to his performances.
Hadiya honestly doesn't know how she feels about this brother. Her own gender confusion is furthered by his 'antics' as she calls them, and he makes her feel terribly confused. She generally only sees him on holidays, unless he comes to visit her. He is four years older than her, and when they were young, they fought quite often.
Azhar Junayd - Azhar is truly the bright star of the family. Soon after starting school, it became clear that he was of genius quality, and was sent off to boarding school on scholarship to hone his mental abilities. He came back a bit more aloof, a bit quieter, and almost a little condescending of his family's 'ignorance'. As soon as he was able, he moved from his parent's home and into a far 'better' place as the apprentice of a much wealthier man; a master charmer who is teaching the young man to follow in his footsteps. With much more magical power than the rest of the family, it is clear that he feels a little superior to them, though he tries hard to hide it. He is married to an heiress he met at boarding school; they have been together since they were sixteen. They are expecting a child, something that has reopened the channels of communication between parents and son.
Hadiya likes Azhar well enough now, and he has very nearly forgiven her for all the black eyes and scrapes she gave him as a child. His way of getting around things with his intellect used to be seen by her as 'cheating', and still is in a way. However, they have come to respect their differences, and will try to stay on neutral ground when speaking; she hates his wife, and so doesn't go to visit him often. He is another that she sees mostly during the holidays. He is three years older than her, and likes to remind her of that fact.
Kamil Junayd - Kamil is the baby of the family, and his mother's pride and joy. He is a clever young man with a gift for crafting like his father; he will likely take over the 'family business' when his father grows too old or too weary to run it. Currently, he still lives at his parent's home, and is an apprentice at his father's workshop. He doesn't have much time for the ladies at the moment; he wants to make sure he is successful and can provide for his family - and let his wife stay at home like his mother did - before he falls in love. He holds those old values as dearly as his mother does, and will very likely never fall for one of those 'independent type' females.
Hadiya and Kamil do not get along. He looks down on her for not being a proper female, and she thinks he's an idiot. He is only a year younger than her, and so she often felt as though she was fighting for her mother's attention because of him when they were small. They've given each other a lot of bruises and the like - she even broke his nose once, though it was mostly an accident. Once they reached the age of about fifteen, they pretty much cut ties with one another. Their views on life conflict, and there is a lot of sibling rivalry still between them. She sees him whenever she goes to visit her mother, but they don't really speak.

Home Sweet Home
Iya lives in a small, rather cramped apartment that is on the third floor of her building. She doesn't really like the place, but she can't afford anything better - and she'd rather die than move back in with her parents. She's made it as cozy as possible with little nick-knacks, throw rugs and pillows, a few paintings on the walls, etc. The living room area has been made more into a study than a place to mingle with friends - she never has them over anyway. At the desk along one wall, she spends a good deal of time writing out her thoughts and findings on other guards.
Femininity
Hadiy struggles terribly with the fact that she is a woman. Don't imagine for one moment that she'd rather be a man though. It's simply that she doesn't know how to act. Unwilling to head her mother's example, with only brothers and male friends, she has no female role model to look up to, no one to show her how to act. When on duty, she is simply a guard. That allows her to do her job, and do it well. However, once she gets into a social situation, doubts begin to plague her. Should she sit down, or wait for a man to help her with her chair? How does one interact with other females? What on earth do you do or say when a man seems interested in you? These questions and more tumble around in her head, making it impossible for her to function correctly.
Beyond that, she knows that she is considered very 'masculine' by other women her age. She's rough and tumble, knows how to fight, and isn't afraid to speak her mind to anyone. Some part of her wants to be a little more frilly and interested in fashion and the like... but then what about the other guards? If she began to wear makeup on the job, or stopped binding her chest, would she be taken as seriously? Is she in fact masculine, and is that why others respect her? She desperately wishes she had someone to talk these things over with.
