Ishekhesi had had a strange few days. It seemed like every time he turned around, a cub turned up that wanted to become a shifter. And they wanted to learn how to be a shifter from him.

It was bad enough dealing with cubs- he didn't know the first thing about cubs. At all. He had never had any (as far as he knew). They all seemed awfully tiny.

And then all of them seemed to want him to teach them. What happened to their dads and moms? Why were all these cubs coming to him?

Relaxing in the sun, he looked down the valley. The smallet cub yet was walking toward him . . . and yes, he stopped in front of him.

"I suppose you want to be a shifter, too?"

Egil was trotting along, minding his own business, considering going to terrorize a group of lizards that kept venturing in on pride territory when he saw a HUGE green lion relaxing in the sun beside the path. It looked like that lion his big, ugly sister was constantly following around and watching move rocks.

When the green lion asked about being a shifter, Egil looked at him with eyes full of scorn.

"Why would I want to be a Shifter and spend the rest of my life here? And what's wrong with your voice? You're not very scary, how are you supposed to protect the pride's lands?"

Ishekhesi was slightly taken aback by the little cub's . . forwardness? He seemed like an angry little thing, but he couldn't be more then a few months old. Why would he be so upset at the idea of living with the Shrinekeepers forever? Sure, they were a new pride, and not very large yet, but they were doing good work. And it was safe here.

"I talk like this because my throat was injured. And I'm not a guard - I'm a Shifter. This is a nice place. It's safe. Why wouldn't you want to spend your life in the pride? It's a big, dangerous world out there."

"Maybe because I'm not a cowardly lump like everyone else around here is," Egil groused. "My dad was a warrior and I'm going to be one, too, no matter what my mom or my sisters say. And he'll feel like a fool for leaving me behind when he took all of my brothers, because I'll be the strongest of all."

Egil had very little fighting experience - the only one he ever fought with was his sister, and, as ferocious as they got, his sister was not the same as fighting for real. He did not let that stand in his way though. Whenever he found his father, he would be impressive and strong, and his brothers would fall before him. He was sure of it.

"It's not cowardly to settle down and live peacefully and want to worship the gods, cub," Ishekhesi said. This little one was so eager to go out into the world and fight, and he had probably never been past the pride's borders. He had no idea what he would be facing out there - all alone.

Ishekhesi did, but he wasn't sure how he could tell the cub what was really out there. Or if the cub would even listen.

"Do you even know how to fight? Have you faced many lions? Do you know what can happen to you if you lose?"

"My dad was a warrior! I have fighting in my blood."

Egil wasn't about to tell the old lion that the only real fight he had ever been in - aside from chasing lizards - was with his rather bigger sister, and he had come off the worse for it.

"Besides there are a lot of lions out there. I'm sure I can refine my skill on them before I get to where I am going. You don't know anything about it."

"Do you know how my voice got like this, young buck? I know I told you I was injured, but there is more to it then that. I used to fight. A lot. All the time. Until I met a lion who was bigger and badder then me. And he almost killed me, and he took my roar. I know a lot about fighting. It just causes pain - especially when you just want to show off."

Ishekhesi shook his head.
"I can see I'm not impressive enough to make you change your mind. But you've been warned, little one."

There was not enough room in the world for the scorn Egil felt for the shifter. He was a failed fighter, and expected his own weakness to deter Egil from fighting for the glory Egil KNEW he deserved. There was no question of this.

"My mom told me about my dad. He was a warrior. A great one. Better then you ever were. I don't need to know about your failures. I just need to know that I'm destined to be great. I don't care what happens to you, and I don't care about this pride."

Ishekhesi shook his head. There would be no talking to the younger lion - he was too sure that he knew his own mind. He knew that he understood the world in a way the old, the settled, the people who didn't thirst for what he thirsted for, could not. There was nothing Ishekhesi could do to change that mind, except to allow Egil to go and get his own experience for himself.

Egil snorted, and left the old shifter to his cowardly thoughts. He already had his plan in his mind, ready to leave the pride behind and never look back. Old lions were so out of touch, thinking they knew everything. That great lump didn't even know who his dad was. He didn't know anything about Egil. He didn't know anything, nothing at all.

Confident in his youth, Egil walked away, nursing grudges that should never have existed and imagining his glorious future.
