Carles stared mournfully out from under a pine tree. It was raining. He hated the rain. It made his fur stick to him, and his paws muddy. The harder it rained the muddier he got. Then he had to clean himself off and it tasted bleck!

He sighed deeply and ran a paw over one of the furs tied around his legs. The second thing he hated about rain is he risked ruining his fuzzies. He loved the different patterns on the furs. Rain would again ruin them. Carles knew he should have left them home when he went out today. However, the rain had stopped for awhile and he'd hoped it wouldn't start again.

But it had. Now the little white cub was stranded under a tree.

Normally Pefe didn't care what his family did as long as they kept themselves out of trouble. He had bigger things to worry about. It was a pity, maybe, but that was just the way the world was. The cheetah cup was occupied when his brother left home, busy tracking the voices in the trees.

Now his brother had strayed into enemy territory, and Pefe was going to fetch him. He crawled towards the tree, belly-down in the grass, ignoring the mud that besmirched his fur. Mud was good. It helped conceal your color, helped block you from their sight. Poor, stupid Carles. Didn't he know he was in terrible danger? Pefe fought back the frustration. It wasn't Carles' fault. Civilians were like that.

Reach Carles, Pefe stopped crawling and lay hunched in the grass, peering up at his brother with stern eyes. "You have to get out of here," he whispered. Like his brother, Pefe's body was festooned with strange items ... in his case, lots of mud ground into his fur to disguise it, and plenty of tangled bits of leaves, bark, and twigs.

Out of no where the voice of his brother reached his ears. The poor little cub yelped loudly and spun around. "Pefe!" he squeaked. His eyes took in his brother's very muddy state and he backed up a couple of steps. He really didn't want that stuff to get on his furs.

"Why do I have to get out? It's raining. I'll get wet, and all matted." He sounded almost pleading. "Why are you covered in mud? You better not bring all that into the den. Mom and dad would get mad." He nodded, Carles did try to look out for his siblings.

That was just like poor, bewildered Carles. Concerned about Pefe's mud and branches, as though tracking a little mud around were a serious crime when they were in the middle of a war zone. He squinted at Carles, disgruntled. Just for once, he'd like some one to pay attention to him when he tried to get them to safety. Instead Pefe was worried about his fur and his 'fuzzies'.

Civilians! If they hadn't been his family, he wouldn't have been able to stand them.

"There are enemies in the trees," Pefe whispered. "Maybe even in this one." He peered up at the branches, staring intensely straight upwards, and then shook his head. "Not yet. But maybe soon!"

He glanced over his shoulder when Pefe whispered there might be enemies. His jaw dropped as his brother mentioned them being in the trees. Really? In all the time Carles spent out here, he'd never been bothered by the trees. Look at them now in fact! Sheltering them from the rain, hardly enemies.

The white cub moved closer to his brother and put a paw on his forehead. Clearly he'd been out here too long and caught a cold. Rolling around in the mud and rain Carles wasn't surprised. "C'mon Pefe. Lets get you home and into a warm bed." He said warmly. If his brother was sick that clearly took priority over keeping his furs clean.

It was hard to keep himself from yelling at Carles when the white cub's mouth fell open like a complete slack-jawed idiot. Yes, Carles was an innocent in this terrible war, but he didn't have to be so stupid! Honestly, it was enough to make Pefe question all that he was giving up for these foolish sheepish people...

Yelling really became irresistible when Carles pawed at his forehead like a nanny. Pefe wanted to bellow at him and send him fleeing home, but he had to remain quiet or they would hear him! Damn it, Carles! Pefe made a strangling noise, shaking Carles' paw off. "Can't go to bed. Too much to do," Pefe whispered. "You go to bed, Carles." Yes, that was the place for Carles ... back home and out of his way.

Carles shook his head when his brother shook off his paw. He laid down beside his brother. No matter how weird he acted, Pefe was still his brother. "Now I can't do that. Mum would kill me if I left you out here alone." He'd started to whisper too, maybe if he did it would help Pefe feel better.

"What do we gotta do?" It was almost like a game. His butt and tail started to wiggle. Wait, maybe Pefe was playing some kind of game. A split second decision and Carles decided he could put up with his furs getting wet and muddy.

Pefe loved his family, he really did, but sometimes they could be so dense. He ground his teeth, frustrated that Carles wouldn't do as he said and run back home. Hopefully when they got older Carles wouldn't be so clingy. Hopefully none of the family would insist on being clingy. It was hard work, protecting them. Hard, thankless work.

Pefe was cautiously pleased that Carles was whispering at least, taking him even a tiny bit seriously. No one had ever offered to help him before. He frowned slightly, wondering what Carles could do to help. "Well ... we gotta keep listening for them. They're up in the trees sometimes. Sometimes, you can hear them whispering," Pefe informed Carles, whispering himself. "So we gotta keep track of them, make sure they don't come too close to home." The cub began to crawl around the base of the tree, squinting up at its branches suspiciously.

Carles was completely clueless why his brother, to him anyhow, acted so strangely. Still that didn't stop the white cub from loving him. It was just something to be tolerated.

He tilted his head listening to his brother. Admittedly he was puzzled. Never had Carles heard voices in the trees. Ever. He spent a fair amount of time out playing in the woods and the trees had never whispered to him. Watching his brother crawling around and looking up at the branches gave him a moment to think. Carles bit on his lip as he thought.

His tail twitched side to side. Should he tell Pefe that he'd never heard voices? He didn't want to loose face, but he couldn't help if he couldn't hear them. Well maybe he had heard them and just didn't realize it.

"Um, Pefe," he whispered, "what do these voices sound like? I just want to know so I don't mistake one that isn't them." That sounded like a safe enough question.

Pefe didn't pay much attention to his family, truthfully, but he was vaguely aware that Bubu heard voices. Usually she was chattering about how nice they were, so he was fairly sure she wasn't talking about Them. The idea that the rest of the family didn't hear things speaking to them would have been strange to Pefe. That idea, actually, had never occurred to him.

The family heard, but they just didn't pay attention. That was the difference between them and Pefe.

He wanted to roll his eyes at Carles' ignorance, but he decided against it. "They sound like ... well, just pay attention! If you hear people whispering in the trees, it's probably them!"

It seemed it wouldn't be hard to hear the voices Pefe was speaking of. Carles tilted his head thinking. How did he tell his brother that he'd never heard said voices? Well maybe he didn't.

The cub put on a face of intense listening. Maybe if he tried hard enough he would hear them. Several minutes passed. He started to get bored. Nothing. Not a single peep outta the trees. His hind quarters shifted restlessly.

"Well, I don't hear anyone. They must not be around. Want to go play a game of tag in the meadow?" Carles thought that getting away from the trees might help his brother. And a good game was sure to fix anything else that didn't.

Carles seemed to be struggling to listen, but Pefe really wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to his brother. He didn't really think Carles would hear anything. The white and pink cub was too loud and had too short of an attention span to really pay attention to the trees. At least, that was what Pefe thought.

The young cheetah really wasn't surprised when Carles lost interest and suggested going to play a game.

"No," he said shortly. "I'm ... busy." He shot a glance over at his brother. "Why don't you go play? I'll see you at home." He probably wouldn't be going home for some time, but he would promise anything to get Carles to give up and leave him alone.

Carles tilted his head first to one side, then the other. "But Pefe, how can you be busy when there's nothing going on here?" His tail twitched. Did his brother really think he could play tag by himself?

"Are you sure you don't want to come play with me? Just for an hour." He smiled and looked hopefully at his brother.
