Squelch! Qahwa looked down in disgust. It was not the first time that day he'd put his paw down on ground which was less than solid, but it seemed to him that this unfortunate placement was wetter than the last, and the water filling the hole seemed to have a bit of a salty scent. From these observations, he deduced that he had gone too far, and was nearing the coast of the great water. The prospect was not a pleasing one to the coffee-colored leopard.

As a rule, Qahwa made it his practice to avoid coastal regions when at all possible. Those areas which were habitable tended to be inhabited by fierce and fiesty prides of lions with astoundingly acquisitive tendencies and a prejudice against non-lions. One experience with those pirates or reavers or whatever they called themselves had been enough to convince him that he had no desire to return to the shore.

Besides, the water wasn't even potable. It was all briney and brackish and left a body thirstier than before they touched tongue to liquid. He didn't see why anyone would want to live in such a place. He should probably just turn around and retrace his steps, but he'd been so certain that this was the direction he meant to travel. Maybe if he pressed on, he'd find he was not mistaken.

This was one of her first times out of the pride. She was uneasy about it, not nearly as confident as she was in the pride. Her fur bristled as the wind hit it and she let her eyes dart this way and that. Why the girl was out here was because she wanted to bring her mate a kill to show she wasn't completely useless at it. Naturally, she was completely useless at it. She had been out here for hours and hadn't found a thing to hunt. Not a rabbit, not a badger, nothing! She puffed in irritation at herself and continued on. Mud flecked her sides and flanks, coated her legs and even splashed on her face as proof of how long she'd been out here. It was like she was a walking mud monster!

She laughed at that thought and paused. Something was coming near. There were squishy noises coming from nearby and she ducked down as if she could hide. Because being a seafoam green lioness away from the sea wasn't totally noticible. Her purple gaze flicked this way and that as she tried to pinpoint what was squishing so close to her home.

Qahwa hadn't been paying too much attention to his surroundings, obviously, or else he would have noticed sooner that he was heading into watery lands. He did have a predator's instincts, however, and when a shape in his peripheral vision paused and then ducked, much like prey would do, his gaze was drawn to that spot.

He had not expected to see the space filled by a seafoam green lioness with a very unusual coat. Curious despite his caution, Qahwa drew nearer, walking at an oblique angle which was not as challenging as simply walking up to a person, but at the same time brought him nearer his intended destination. He definitely wanted a closer look at this lioness.

And once he had one he was intrigued. She had lovely purple eyes which went surprisingly well with her coat color, and the decorative jewelry she wore flattered her well. He wondered if she crafted it herself or if she knew someone who had done it for her. Seashells and pretty stones weren't really his thing, but he still liked the idea of some sort of decorative adornment. Maybe a tasteful hoop and stud in one ear, just to catch the light when he moved his head. Except that would making hunting more difficult, so maybe not.

"Hello there," he called, confident in his own ability to make friends with anyone and very much interested in befriending this lioness with the interesting pelt. "You don't quite blend in with the scenery, but you do look quite fetching."

A startled flush crept across her cheeks, brows knitting together. Oh, dear! It seemed someone had sen her and complimented her! And a boy on top of it all. Her steps faultered, her mouth worked as he came into view and made himself known. Letting out a little more than an 'eep' she seemed to hide in herself all at once.

Brows knitting together, she bit down on her lip before clearing her throat. "U-uhm.... Hello." Her voice wasn't as confident as she once had been. With one compliment all of her hard work just seemed to crumple. "It's.... it's not that ... I mean... There's..." Wonderful, she couldn't get a single word out right now.

Closer, Qahwa could see that mud speckled the lioness's coat. Noticing that made him smile, as if her stammered response wouldn't have already gotten that sort of reaction from him.

"Relax," he said. "I'm not going to pounce on you and start gnawing or anything like that. It wouldn't be polite. At least until we know each other's names. That's something positive, right?"

He was trying to put her at ease. It was more than a little unnerving to have a lioness unsettled by him. Usually it was the other way around, and he hadn't realized how odd the shift would be. Clearly he was not cut out to be any sort of intimidating warrior-type.

Sabbia gave a kind of embarrassed laugh before sighing deeply. "You caught me off guard..." She said finally, still a little nervous but he wasn't going to hurt her. She trusted what others said, maybe a little too much sometimes. It was bound to get her in trouble one day. "My name is S-Sabbia." Mentally she kicked herself for stuttering again. Her mate told her that it was fine to be nervous sometimes when she stepped out of the pride.

She looked at him for the first time, really looked. He was a leopard. There were very few in the pride. Licking her muzzle, she took in his beautiful colors and then remembered she was covered in mud. Wonderful! Just what she needed. "Sorry for... the mud. I was hunting. Or trying too.."

Qahwa couldn't help smiling at what he took to be a very shy young lioness. He didn't have it in him to take any sort of pleasure in intimidating her, and so his only other option was to try to reassure her that he really was friendly - or at least not unfriendly. He wasn't going to try to persuade her that he was harmless because he had learned that most lions came to that conclusion about leopards eventually anyway, and there was no cause for him to hasten their reaching that conclusion. Inevitably once they did, they would become far less pleasant to talk to.

"It's good to meet you, Sabbia. I'm Qahwa. And now that we know each other, I suppose it would be all right for one or the other of us to pounce and start gnawing." His ears flicked sideways and his whiskers twitched forward in amusement. "I think, since you're the one hunting, it will probably be you. Perhaps I should keep my distance."

He had looked her over when she apologized for the mud, and before that, and been unbothered by it. "I can hardly see how you'd avoid the mud around here. It's sort of everywhere." He made a face. Mud wasn't something he enjoyed.

Qahwa was used to hearing people speak with fondness and pride of their prides. All of them seemed to speak with the same sort of childlike devotion. It seemed odd that everyone he had ever met was so enamored of being part of a group governed by rules and people who may or may not have been well-suited to governance. Personally, he thought he might go absolutely insane if he were forced to partake of such an existence. And yet many of them tried to convinc him that he wanted to do exactly that. He appreciated that so far Sabbia had made no attempts at proselytizing.

"I could smell the salt from the ocean in the air. Is that what gives your fur that pretty curl? The salt in the air and water." He knew he ought to stop complimenting her, since it apparently made her uncomfortable, but he was in one of those moods, and so the compliments just came easily. He was trying to tone them down, though. He was aware that he could be perfectly outrageous when he really got going.

"I'm just here to enjoy the scenery," he said with an ironic glance at the mud around his paws. "I had rather expected more water and less mud, though I'm not sure why I would have that impression."

She squeaked at the compliment but nodded. "I...It's exactly that. Would you like to see the ocean? Visitors are welcome." She wouldn't convince him to join the pride, it simply wasn't her place. In Sabbia's heart she felt if someone wanted to join the pride they would feel the call of the ocean. He didn't seem too, but that was alright. Even those who didn't want to join her pride could be good company. Yes, she was growing more and more confident as she talked to this leopard.

"The pride is sand, and it is much more dry until you hit the shore. And even then the mud isn't as bad as this. Because.... it's sand." She blinked at that and frowned. Why couldn't she be clever with words like her mate? "I... need to head back there, anyway. To gather more things for my crafting."

Princess_Feylin
"I would love to see the ocean," Qahwa said truthfully.

He had never really seen it, and he had been curious about this great body of salt water since first he'd heard of it. He'd seen large lakes and vast rivers, and even encountered salt water before in his travels, but there was much about the ocean which he couldn't easily imagine. It was simply too alien of a concept, and for a leopard who liked new experiences, it was unacceptable that he hadn't experienced the ocean.

"Thank you," he added. "I know about sand, though I guess it's different when it's wet than when it's in a desert."

He wondered if she would even know what a desert was, and if he would have to explain it to Sabbia, but she continued speaking, saying that she needed to head back to her pride. For a moment he wasn't sure if that was a dismissal or an invitation to come with her.
