Mau still couldn't believe this. Had he really asked Nyx out on a date? No no, this was a scientific outing. He'd managed to grab a nap after leaving the lab, and now was waiting in the parking garage for Nyx.
His clothes were a far cry from what he normally wore. A pair of dark boot cut jeans over hightop sneakers. He had a dark red and black harlequin dogtooth patterned sweatshirt. It was zipped half way up, still showing off a white shirt. He checked his watch. He was still early.

Just as incredulous, Nyx denied adamantly that Mau had asked her on a date. Amusement park rides were scientific, that was obviously the only reason they were going. She even refused to believe that she was dressing up for the date; It was a disguise to blend in with the public, and if she happened to look nice in her ruse, so be it.
Nyx showed up at the rendezvous spot dressed in a grey sweater dress with yellow buttons and belt, a pair of black leggings tucked into some floppy tan heeled-boots, and her hair tucked into a tan wool beret.
Her arrival was heralded by the clacking of heels on concrete; She walked briskly over to Mau, as if they were preparing to go on a mission, and not on a date. "Mau."

Mau looked up as Nyx entered the parking enclosure. He smiled faintly at her before raising a hand in greeting. He'd already checked out a car for them. "Looking good." He said mildly. He gestured towards the car. It was a modest ride. It looked like a normal person's car and would blend in perfectly with the cars of the masses.
It would only be about an hours drive south to the carnival. And given the late season, the sun would just have just set by the time they get there. The cover of darkness! It was perfect, right?

"Ah, thanks... You... are wearing a sweatshirt. That's new." She could not say he looked good too, that would be too close to the niceties of an actual date. She had to act normal. "I brought a notepad- for science!" Nyx stumbled around with her words and blurted out science a little louder than she meant to, which she tried to cover up with some awkward laughing.
"... Lets get going." Nyx retreated into the wide neck of her sweater as she climbed into the passenger side seat of their car. She would try to say as little as possible. That would be acting normal, and then they would do science and eat junk food and not be on a date at a carnival in the evening.

That was... different. Strange, but different. Somehow, he couldn't help but shake his head at that. "It better be a small notepad. Wouldn't want a huge one flapping in the breeze for everyone to see, right?"
You'd think that Nyx hadn't ever been on a date before. NO! This wasn't a date. Well, it was. But it was a scientific endeavor. Somehow the drive seemed longer than it should have been. And Mau was aware of every time Nyx moved or shifted. He thought about striking up conversation, but of what? What did you do today? How about that last assignment? Did you hear about this class Seth was going to hold? yeah, those would be riveting conversations. So he said nothing until they pulled into the makeshift parking lot, composed of a large open field with some rope fence around it.
And it was packed. Almost every space was filled. Mau was glad he'd picked a small car, able to squeeze into a spot an SUV had to pass up.
But for as bad as the parking lot was, the entrance was worse. People were everywhere. So as to not loose Nyx, he reached around, draping his arms across her shoulders as they entered the sardine can-like bottle neck of an entrance.

It seemed like every other person on Kodo had the same idea about catching the last day of the carnival as they did. Nyx squeaked when Mau put his arm around her, though it was a wonder if anyone was able to hear it over the rumblings of rides, people, and other amusement park sounds. It was an entirely involuntary sound, and it baffled the scientist for a few moments.
Nyx was glad to at least have someone to guide her through the crowd, whose components were all largely a foot or more taller than she was, even though it meant making the pair look even more like they were on a date.
"What do we want to test first?"

Mau chose to ignore the startled sound from Nyx. Calling attention to it would just make her flail or something completely obvious and strange. It wold be nearing the dinner rush, so most of the rides should have short lines. "You didn't eat before we came, right?" He said before pointing to a particularly epic and intricate looking roller coaster, affectionately called "The Doom Bringer" as labeled on the wooden sign painted to look like the words were on fire.
It was a pretty crude sign, but the line was short, and with the twists and turns, the ride seemed like it spanned the whole of the carnival.

"Of course not. The procedures called for by this experiment specifically included eating copious amounts of sugars and fats, I would never skew the data by eating beforehand." Nyx stopped yammering when she saw what Mau was pointing at. It was a behemoth of a roller coaster, and made the scientist feel even smaller than the crowd of giants did. "Oh my... Alright. Yes." She could do this, she was a Team Rocket agent. This was easy compared to being shot at.
It was a good thing Nyx hadn't eaten; She hadn't been on a roller coaster of any size for years. When Mau asked her out, the rides that had popped into her head were ones like 'the scrambler', 'bumper rhyhorns', 'the octillery', and those little tea cups. It wasn't long before it was too late to back out and they were seated and buckled in to one of the cars. Nyx was almost too small for the safety grips and bars to fit properly.

Mau glanced at Nyx as they were strapped in. He didn't have much time to worry about her though. The ride jerked into a slow motion forward, slowly gaining speed before thrusting forward and turning sharply upwards before sending the riders into a downwards corkscrew.
The whole ride was twists and turns, loops and doubling back. It sounded like the people behind Mau and Nyx threw up, and his date wasn't happy about it.

Some time during the doom coaster, Nyx had grabbed Mau's hand and promptly began crushing it with equal parts terror and rage as she screamed and various profanities. It was clear now, Mau hadn't asked her on a date because he liked her, no; He asked her out as a cover so that he could murder her with this embodiment of every nightmare.
The ride could not come to an end fast enough.

This particular response to the ride was not the one Mau had expected. His poor hand! But Mau simply cringed and gave her hand as reassuring a a squeeze as he could. By the time the ride ended, his index and middle finger were numb from lack of blood. But when she let go, he would just shake his hand out till feeling returned.

"I knew it!" Nyx stumbled on quaking legs away from the roller coaster, her legs weren't quite sure what was going on, and decided they would act like octopus tentacles until they made up their mind. "This isn't a date at all! Its all a trick so you can murder me!" Nyx had thrown her noodle arms into the air to emphaize her displeasure at being tricked and dragged onto the roller coaster.

Mau blinked at her in surprise. She did seem somewhat unsteady on her legs. "Do you think I'd pay $15 for parking if I was going to kill you?" He put his hands on his hips like he was scolding her. "Besides!" He leaned in closer "This is research. If you didn't experience that your data would be incomplete. Now you've done it, you don't need to do it again."
Logic, right?

Nyx went to say something, but closed her mouth and stared suspiciously at Mau instead. "...You're right. But I'm keeping my eye on you!" She seemed done with this topic and wobbled her way over through the crowd to a bench to sit down, both to get her senses back, and to take notes on the first part of the experiment.
When she was finished, she put the notebook away and looked at Mau. "What next?"

Mau followed her, and stood there. To people passing it looked like some sort of lovers quarrel. Whatever. When Nyx's notes were finished and she was expecting him to pick the next ride, he rubbed the back of his head nervously.
Why the hell was he nervous?!
Oh right, Nyx thought he was trying to kill her.
"Why don't you pick. That way you know it's safe."
