It was twilight, and Nessie had surfaced to find the crimson day turning to the softer purple hues of night. It seemed like a bloody end to a day, one that didn't want to leave yet. But night had quenched it and overtaken it. Despite the violent end of day, she found some kind of beauty in it. Night was the monster....And she had been thinking about it more and more these days. Night cloaked all dreams and made some into nightmares, it hid the monsters and the evil. More and more, she'd heard it's animalistic call. She'd wanted to refuse, but now...she didn't know. Her ears perked, she could hear something moving. She was tired of them coming to her home and tormenting her! Tonight, she would fight back. Couldn't she be left alone?

There was indeed activity as the day took its last dying gasps before succombing to the onslaught of steady darkness. The purple skies above indicated that soon the brightness, the light- the hope of that day was drawing to a close, allowing the uncertainty of night to take its place. For this was the time that shadows played against the offputting paleness of the moon, and creatures with far little to do during sun-shiny hours were just awakening from deep slumber. One such creature, as he always did, felt the encouraging p***k of hunger deep in his gut; and, it had prompted him to quickly rectify the issue.
Desvayne found hunting in the twilight hours to be amongst one of his favorite things to do, and normally that task was simple enough. Usually he lured whatever prey he could to the water's edge, so long as it had meat enough to satsify his hunger he didn't care where it came from, but tonight there had been a complication. Long story short, the 'animal' (as he didn't care to note just what it was) had grown paranoid at the last second and bolted away from the river. That had left Des with the detestable act of chasing it down on land where his muscular but ungainly tail had proved to slow him down considerably.
In time he had caught his prey, devored what he wished, and with bloody maw and hooves was finally returning to the water where he felt most at home. His hooves crushed the grass as he approached the deep river's shore, the ocean being no more than a few miles away, as he did not hesiate to believe he would be the only one in the water tonight. Its not often he encountered others of or similar to his species... but then, this particular stretch of water was unfamilar to the kelpie as he normally stayed more up-river away from the ocean.

Nessie lifted her nostrils above the water and sniffed the air, she could smell the iron-like stench of blood. She has been right, it had been a bloody ending day. She sniffed the putrid smell, trying to sense how close and where the blood was coming from. Right now, she didn't mind a fight, she wanted it.
She craned her neck as she listened....She could hear the heavy blobs of blood hitting the ground, then easing into the water. Fluid motions, and splashing...fins...A kelpie.
There weren't any kelpies that frequented here that ate meat or drank blood. Someone was invading her place, her place. She could feel a growl building in her throat. She would make them leave.
Submersing herself, she made her way over to the smell of blood. Glimmers of teeth flashed at her through the growing dark, and she could see the blood and flesh floating in the water. Keeping silent, she readied herself.

He did not hesitate to enter the water, nor did he stop to survey what might be in the area. Perhaps the fresh kill had made him arrogant, but Desvayne liked to believe it simply did not matter. Territory was hardly a thing for him to be bothered with, especially with how few water-dwellers he had met with since his departure from the under water city of the merlok. In his opinion it was better this way, as he had grown tired of hearing tales of the land-strider humans and soquili. Indeed he did envy them for their ability to travel so well over the strange terrain, and had taken a liking to the idea of tormenting and preying upon their world. To the kelpie, nothing was better than being a monster to those who had not yet learned the terrors of the water.
Desvayne's lightly scaled hide glided through the water, causing minimal amount of ripples as he slipped into the deeper portion of the river where his hooves could not reach the ground. Perhaps if he had been more observant of his surroundings he would have noticed the nostrils that had stuck out of the water for a mere moment before disappearing under the surface, but as it was Desvayne was oblivious to the fact that this water belonged to another. The night grew dark and the kelpie dove underneath the black water, his golden markings and eyes glowing slightly as night crept closer.
He was unprepared to the idea of not being alone tonight, and squinted slightly as a shadow moved in the depths. His night vision had begun to kick in earlier, but for the moment he was slightly hindered in the pure darkness of the water and would need a minute for his eyes to adjust completely. However, he was certain he had seen something, and in response raised his lips to expose his shark-like teeth as a warning. He would need to focus and find the shadow again, for at the moment he was unsure of its where abouts. His impared vision was not a comfort in the situation and it showed as his fin spikes raised to fan out the membrane between them.

Nessie approached the blood-soaked kelpie. She could smell that he had just been feeding. The smell was unappetizing to her, but something in her was building, ready to defend against his intrusion into her home.
She watched as the ripples spread out from him, small lines of blood spiraling off and out into the water. It was contaminating her home, her water...
She bared her teeth, and rose from the water. He would still be unadjusted to the water, to the night....She would defend her home, she would let the monster rage.
Nessie wasn't afraid of the monster, not now...maybe again later. But for now, it served it's purpose.
For so long, she had warred against the monsters. She had fought against it, but she had lately come to accept that the monster might be just a part of who she was....who she was meant to be.
Why couldn't she be a monster and...whatever the other was. Let them both serve their purpose, but it was so fine a line...She would never be able to swim that line, not easily.

He was not as attune to the water as someone who spent their entire life cradled in its embrace, so it was not easy for the kelpie to pick up on the subtle shifts that would tell him just where the shadow had gone. Smell was no good either, for his nostrils were preoccupied with the task of retaining air in his lungs. Even at this large disadvantage the hunter, the predator that tormented the land-dwellers, was not as quick to turn such uncertainty into ferocity in the water. This was his beloved paradise and estranged home, with creatures he felt more akin to than those he preyed upon on land. So, as he was unable to locate the shadow as is, nor sense it with any of his other fall backs, Desvayne began to feel as though he was the one dealing with a 'monster' hidden in the shadows. The thought amused him greatly. Imagine the irony!
His snarl twisted into a wicked grin at those thoughts and he could not help the low, throaty laugh that followed and sent bubbles to the surface. That was fine. He'd play the shadow's game- as that's what he chose to see it as. With a quick flick of his lithe body to the side and a hard to pump from his muscular tail to propel him the kelpie darted away unexpectedly through the dark waters. He hoped it would give chase! His glowing mimic markings and eyes would make him easy to follow, that much he was certain of.
He ached to play this dangerous game with whatever lurked and refused to make itself more publicly known. It had been a relatively large shadow that he had seen, and no fish that dwell in this river was more than a couple of mouthfuls of meat. And sharks? They wouldn't be able to survive in the diluted river water. Therefore, it had to be something else, something he assumed to be more akin to himself than a simple fish. It would be fun to draw that identity out into the open, especially with his underwater night vision needing a few moments still to kick in. That is to say: the kelpie planned on tricking the shadow into a more agreeable light so he may see it just who he was dealing with. The easiest way to do that? Well, Desvayne had a plan for this undersea monster, but he'd need to see if it would chase him first.

Nessie could see his devilish smile glinting in the light, and it wrankled her. Offended her in some off-hand manner, as if her mere presence was frivolous to him. His treatment of her, her feeling of his blatant disregard...it made the monster come forth more prominent in her.
She would show him! She would make him realize who he was dealing with. Her anger surged and as he darted through the water, she let the adrenaline kick in. Her only urge now was to make him pay for his transgression and his trespassing. He had offended her, bloodied her water with his bloody kill.
The irony-taste was in her mouth, and angered her further. She would make him pay, her teeth were bared as she flipped her fin and propelled herself forward with a lust for his hide.

The noise behind him was the giveaway he needed in order to know that whatever it was indeed intended to chase him. Excellent! The kelpie barked another laugh that sent a spray of bubbles floating behind him. He had been a little tired out due to the surface chase, but luckily his destination wasn't far away. A quick sprint through the water and he'd be there, and luckily for him, it was much easier to move underwater than it was on land. Perhaps that's one more reason he despised the land-lovers so much, to know that they could move freely and easily without the burden awkward sea legs to keep them at an ungainly pace.
Back to the moment at hand however, and the kelpie put his plan into motion. He had been zigzagging and zipping along at the best of his ability, making sure not to lead the shadow in a bee-line, as he was certain it would have seen through the ploy if he had. With one powerful thrust from his tail and a hard jerk of his body the kelpie launched himself out of the water, making it appear as though he were merely trying to gain speed by 'jumping' much like a dolphin would. In reality though, he led them to a sheer drop off in the water, just feet from the shore. Deep enough still at this point to feel like the middle of the river, but once out of water the kelpie gathered himself and prepared to land his jump onto dry land. Albeit, a risky move considering how poorly he maneuvered on land, but it was the only way to trick the river shadow out of hiding- and more into his place of power where he'd have the upper hoof.
Of course the landing didn't go quite so well, he stumbled and almost ate dirt but managed to keep himself up on all fours, before awkwardly spinning to face the water's surface and prepare for the arrival of the undersea beast. That is, if he'd tricked it of course. The anticipation, though short in retrospect, was indeed a killer.

Nessie watched as he fled. He was fleeing? That didn't make sense...she had not seen that in him. However, it did not stop her pursuit of him. Thrashing and flailing through the water, she swam fast after him. His erratic changes of directions made her lose valuable ground.
Her body was poised to strike, when his lifted out of water. Slowing suddenly, she stopped. There was no...splash. No splash.
He wasn't back in the water. Edging forward, she could see the low land where the deep just suddenly stopped. He had been trying to beach her! She had known that he was not afraid....
A worthy adversary...Worthy. She was intrigued, half longing to talk with him and half longing the game might go on just a little longer. She was sure she could win.

Moments turned to seconds and eventually the stallion got the idea. Damn! His great chance at seeing the shadow unmarred by darkness foiled by, well, he would assume it's common sense. Still it managed to get a hearty laugh from the kelpi stallion, his muscular tail swaying out behind him as he was feeling a might bit high spirited this night. Perhaps it was the blood surging through his veins from their chase, or maybe it was just one of those nights where Desvayne just felt like behaving so bastardly. And to one of his aquatic kin no less! Surely this night held great potential for fun.
The bloodbath appaloosa figured he had left his 'friend' hanging for long enough, and decided it was time for him to return to the water once again. To what, he wasn't exactly sure of, but the stallion's face remained in wide toothy grin as he went charging back into the water. No need to wade in softly or be stealthy about it, the thing knew he was there and Desvayne had no mind to disappoint. "Catch me if you can, Brainy! Don't tell me I wore you out already!" he challenged without restraint, his voice carried loudly through the open, silent sky as he reached the drop off and dove back into the deeps.
Be it his undoing or his making, the kelpi had the mind to toy with this creature, and hoped dearly that it enjoyed it as much as he did. For the stallion had a constant spasm of bubbles floating behind him as his twisted laughter escaped his maw. Probably not the best idea if he were trying to hold his breath for very long, but he was fairly certain he could breach the surface before that happened again.

Nessie had waited, refusing to move. Her heart beat slowly, in prepardness for her attack soon. Taking a deep breath, she pushed herself forward roughly after the stallion. As he hit the water, his maniacal laughter ringing out, she chased him. But it would not be long. He was far too sure of himself, far too....playful for his own good.
Her tail flicked hard and she propelled herself fast, seeing his mighty tail flick out behind him. She timed it...and next time it swung back she pushed herself forward and bit deeply at his tail.

To be honest, the kelpi had not expected it to go on for much longer, as much as he enjoyed making the shadow chase him, there was an inevitable end to the game to come. Be it the stallion's blood that now burned and coursed through his veins after a fresh kill, or the sight of the pale moonlight glinting through the water, Desvayne surely felt the effects of high spirits. It had been a few moments now, and his darkvision had begun to take hold, which meant he could see much better now than he had previously when this first began. OUCH! He had not been prepared for the sudden jolt he received from his highly prized and most valuable possession: his tail.
He reacted without thinking, without realizing his own action until it was too late to stop. It happened without warning to the kelpi, previously in good spirits, as his laughter and the bubble spasms halted; and, in its place the ripple of a snarling roar as he lithely craned the whole of his body into a curve in order to launch himself back toward his attacker. Unlike on land, the kelpi stallion felt much more at home in the water and was not hindered by his muscled tail, thus reacting like a coiled snake with his tail grabbed from the other end proved possible. Shark-like teeth lined his jaw like daggers, aiming to rip into any bit of flesh they could get at. However... Desvayne did not make it a habit to strike so viciously at his aquatic neighbors, as he held them in so high a regard that this reaction surprised even him. Then again, this was the first time his tail- a very personal part of his visage -had been grabbed and bitten into so deeply.

Nessie had expected her "prey"---since when had she thought of him as prey? He was more a nusiance to her than anything. An intruder...an invader...but prey? Why had that word leapt so quickly to mind. She wasn't doing this out of evil was she? Was she?
For a moment, she stumbled over the question. No, it was invasion. That was all, he was in her home and it was not right. That was the pure and simple answer. Shaking her mind clear she went back to her previous thoughts. She had expected him to feign pain, to struggle harder to get away...but not to turn on her vicious and snarling. She was not prepared. Quickly, she back-peddaled for a moment, feeling slightly weak for doing so.
Bearing her teeth, she faced him off letting her full-length be released. What would happen now?

The water around him swirled with motion for a mere moment, slowly coming to a calm standstill as Desvayne held his position. It felt colder now, for no physical reason, other than the stallion's own chilling demeanor. What now? The kelpi took the time to study the creature that previously only been a shadow, its full length and structure finally known to the nth degree. It was a mer, of some unknown origin as Desvayne had never seen any of its kind before. Completely bald, jutting fangly teeth, with a tail as smooth as a sea snakes save for the flippers. An unexpected sight, but what better to fit the identity of the shadow?
In all honesty, Des had no desire to fight with the mer, having snapped out of instinct rather than ill-will. And as such, allowed his posture to release its rigid stance, flicking his tail once or twice for good measure. Sharp pain shuttered through the length of it and traveled up his spine, and for that he had to snort his distaste; however, his snarl twisted into a criminal's grin. It was obvious now that he had indeed intruded on someone's waters, but he liked this one. Or rather, the idea it had presented him, and would prefer to remain a little while longer- welcomed or not.
"Its not often that I have the odds turned in someone else's favor", he spoke, glowing yellow orbs fixing them self on the mer's gaze. With a light motion the kelpi twisted to the side, positioning himself to better watch its movements. "How did you enjoy being the monster, this go round? Fun, isn't it? I can't tell you how ironic it is for me, to be the prey for once," he persisted without falter, the laughter and taunting free from his voice, leaving only smooth intrigue in its wake. To say the least, their 'game' had pleased the stallion, as all matters of sin usually did. Still, he had not let his guard down when it came to watching for any sign of attack, curious but not suicidal in his probing.

Nessie had bore her fangs at him and he had decidedly backed down. Not out of fear, no not that, but out of intrigued. Someone was intrigued with her. She swished her tail, and watched him ready in case he tried to pull another trick on her.
Her throaty voice echoed out, "I know what it's like to be the monster. Maybe, maybe it was what I was born to be, but seldom...seldom the prey. Are we done with games? Shall I invite you to my waters freely?" She looked at him, careful to keep her fangs at the ready.
