As most people know from reading my other posts in this guild, I am a student of all religions. I am interested in reading the Holy Qu'ran, but am unsure what translations I should acquire (I normally like to read two translations of a holy text side by side to compare them.) How many different translations into english are there? Which would be best for someone who simply wants to read the text without a lot of clutter?

How many different translations into english are there? I have an old translation of it, from 1953. The translator claims that it's the first english version of the Koran in print, but I'm not sure about that. I recommend getting a much more recent version.
Does anyone know if a "study" version of the Koran exists, where it has the text, and a reference and explaination in the margins? And if a study version exists, which would be recommended for me to get?

If they had a study Koran, I'd want one. I have a bible like that, and even though I don't really read it, it does help for understanding when I do decide to. (One day, I do plan on reading the whole bible, just because it has some interesting stories..in the old testament anyway.)

right now i am studying this book on Islam, which although it is of course a textbook still seems quite fair, and not too wordy:
"An Introduction to Islam", by David Waines, Cambridge University Press, 1995.

I dunno. We have many books, and its Qu'ran for those who keep spelling it wrong. Every book I have, many different one has the same translation.

"Koran" is the phonetical spelling- "Qu'ran" is the accurate spelling, though both are widly used.

All of the Qur'ans i have have the same translations. The Qur'an has never been changes, so there is no reason for you to check in more than one Qur'an.
