Sciophobia. Fear of shadows. A name that was rather literal for Scio, he hated the shadows... and since the shadows were everywhere believed that they obviously hated him too. You see, something lurks in the shadows... something born of darkness and evil... and if Scio stops even for a moment while standing within them then.... BOOM! CRUNCH! He will be eatten.
He believes this with all his heart and soul, and so each night he runs and runs and runs, never stopping, never faultering... because if he does they will find him, the wide spread of shadows hunters, all there for one purpose.... to make him stop. And in the day Scio likes to sleep in the middle of the biggest field he can find... flattening every blade of grass until they no longer cast a shadow. You may ask about his own shadow.... well, Scio believes it will betray him one day... but for now... needs must.
That is why he was currently standing in the middle of a field, hooves ready to flatten the crash in his daily ritual. Scio never picked the same spot two days in a row... that was foolish, the minions of the shadows would surely find him then.
Stomp stomp stomp. He set to his work.

Amitabha walked that day. The sunlight glittered off his many golden decorations and a soft puff of breeze lifted the ends of his dangling scarves. It was a chill day and it was also a day of beauty. He saw that beauty in the naked branches of the trees and in the birds roosting in them, their feathers puffed up against the cold. The sky above was beautiful as well. Clouds hung near motionless in the blue expanse.
He reflected upon this as he walked. He did not spend his idle time idly. He was in almost constant contemplation of both the world around him and the world beyond. It was only the mind that understood itself that could achieve enlightenment.
He was pondering this idea when he saw the strange dark stallion before him. He instantly picked out the webbed wings but he received none of the usual warning signals that would accompany the sighting of a kalona. No, whatever the stallion was, Amitabha didn't imagine him to be dangerous. Still, Amitabha approached slowly to this dark stranger.

Scio's ears twitched, it was a familar reaction now..... one that had him turning his head automatically to the sound as he also took a step back. He disliked strangers, they were the spawn of darkness.... sent to test him, to lure him into the shadows so it could claim him. He didn't want to be claimed, didn't want to become the darkness.
"Stay back!" He hissed, but his voice was shaky.
He knew that most Kalonas would keep others away by a their look alone, but that had never worked for him. His wings drooped and sways at his side and he never had the courage to bring them up and bare them in an effort to scare others away from him. He would use them to fly but only when his legs failed him.... flying was more dangerous, clouds and darkness lingered high up above him... waiting, always waiting for him.

Amitabha stopped as soon as the words were out of the stallion's mouth. It was possible that he had misjudged the situation and that the stallion was indeed a creature to be wary of. He watched the stranger, slowly calculating. A stray puff of breeze blew by that lifted the ends of his ornate scarves slightly. They waved in the breeze as Amitabha contemplated the stranger before him.
He still sensed no danger. The stallion seemed afraid, not threatening. Amitabha knew that a fearful creature could be just as dangerous as a hostile one. If the creature was erratic then maybe even more so. Was this stallion erratic? Silently Amitabha watched him.
"Are you injured?" he asked at last, his voice calm and with little inflection. "I am a unicorn. I could soothe your wounds."

Sciophobia hissed again. He didn't know what to do..... the other stallion was offering him aid? A TRICK!
He shook his head, with such speed that the movement was probably a blurr. He closed his eyes and stepped back.... first stepping into his 'nest' and then to the grass behind it.
"Stay back monster...." he bellowed, "I know what you are... you'll never take me! The shadow's can't have me!"
Scio nearly cried in anger, misery and.... desperation. Had the shadows finally found a way to reach him? He was too exhausted to run, it had been so long since he had slept... but he couldn't stay here, not now. He needed to get rid of the other creature... the beast of shadows.... so that he could find himself a new place to bed down for the day.
The only question that remained was...... how?

What a strange reaction. The other soquili was more than just wary, he was downright fearful. Amitabha felt compassion for the creature. He was obviously suffering and it was his goal to end the suffering of soquilikind. What a pity that a soquili who appeared to have the blood of one of the strongest races should be so frightened. Amitabha took efforts to even not step on the ants that walked over the dirt. He would not do harm to another soquili even if it might end his own life.
"I am no minion of the shadows," he said in the same calm voice. He made no move to get closer to the soquili. He stood exactly where he had stopped, hooves planted in the swaying grass beneath them.
"I assure you that I will not harm you. It is against every part of my philosophy to bring pain to another living creature."

Scio heard the words but did not believe them, could not believe them.... would not believe them. It was a trick, the most common of all.... Edel, the enchrantress in the forest all those many moons ago had used such a trick, had told him he was safe, that she could show him the light and a way out of the darkness.... she seduced him..... and still the darkness remained.
Still it hunted him, tried to make him one with it..... he would not have it!
"Stay back," He ordered, his voice shaky and raw. "You are a liar! A LIAR!!" Scio closed his eyes and shook his head, taking a step back..... followed by another...... and another.
