Edgar was having one of his fancy parties where he invited the other lawyers from the firm over and entertained them. Tobias had not yet experienced one of these parties, but he already knew it was going to be a terrible experience.
"Is there anything we can do about those dreadful wings?" Melinda was digging through his closet in an attempt to find something that would cover his wings up.
"Put him in a jacket. He can fold them up." Edgar responded curtly from the doorway.
"I don't want to wear a jacket." Tobias folded his arms across his chest, glancing from his father to his mother. They both shot him a glare.
"You'll wear what we want you to wear, understand? Now put this on. And those pants. And for god's sake stop shaking that tail around! It's bad enough that you have horns!" Melinda tossed a jacket at him and then stormed out of the room, leaving Edgar to stare at him accusingly.
"I don't want any incidents tonight. You'd better behave, boy." Edgar shut the door and followed after his wife to the front room where guests were already arriving.
Reluctantly Tobias dressed himself in a rather nice pair of black pants, a white button up shirt, a tie, and then a rather uncomfortable black jacket. He could already tell that those darn wings were going to be sore by the end of the night from being cramped inside the jacket.
Eventually he joined his family out in the front room, but opted to keep to the wall. Neither parent looked his way or made any effort to introduce him to their friends.

Derrick was invited to a coworkers party. He wanted to stay home and watch the game he'd taped. Alice made him go. So he tidied up and dressed nicely and was left waiting for Alice to stop preening (she wasn't even the one with feathers for goodness sake).
Cambria'd been the first to be readied. Alice couldn't just leave her behind, or with a brat sitter because she'd likely break something valuable. Or kill the cat.
When they finally arrived, astoundingly on time, Cambria was introduced quickly then purposefully forgotten about. That was fine with her. She sighed. More dresses, more high heels more snobby adults- hey, that kid over by the wall looked promising.
She immediately tromped her way over. "Hi, I'm Cambria. Do something amusing."

Tobias was just starting to feel his eyes glaze over when he heard a small voice demanding that he do something amusing. Immediately whatever temper he had left flared up. He cast a glare down at Cambria, complete with an irritated twitch of his tail.
"Don't order me around in my own home." he snapped back. It only took him a moment longer to realize that she wasn't exactly human either. That piqued his interest, but not enough to calm him down again. "What are you?" he raised one thin brow in mild curiosity.

Cambria grinned. The kid did something amusing! He talked to her in her head! Neat. Then what he said registered. She puffed a bit of air out to toss a stray feather out of her face.
"Sheesh. I'm a girl. Duh." She stomped her foot childishly. "I wish I could have stayed home and annoyed Fluffy. Though...", she trailed off and peered up at him, "That talking in the mind thingy is pretty neat. How do you do that?"

"I know that, I'm not stupid. I mean what are you? You're not human." Tobias rolled his eyes and let out a mental sigh. "Who is Fluffy?" Fluffy seemed to be an odd name for a sibling or something... Tobias didn't have any pets of his own, he had begged for one, but it was answered with a resounding "no" from everyone in the house. Apparently the barnyard animals were enough for the family. Never mind that Tobias wasn't allowed to go anywhere near them....

"Pfft." She made a dismissing sound. "Fluffy is Alice's evil cat. His real name is Sir something or other, I'm not going to remember. And I'm a meta, you're a meta, we're aaaalll metas! Only not really. I'm a fallen, whatever that means. Kinda wish I had horns and wings though. Soooo how'd you talk in my head?" She cocked her head rather like a curious bird.

"Evil cat... I think I would rather annoy an evil cat than be forced to attend this thing... they don't even want me here." Tobias glanced to his parents with a look of such sourness it was a wonder that he hadn't tried to throw something at them yet.
"Fallen... I think I would rather be a Fallen than an Incubus." He shook his head. "They made me stuff my wings in this jacket, they're such a pain..." Tobi let out yet another mental sigh. "I don't know, I just do? It's how I talk."

"Screw it!" She'd heard that one from some of the older pageant girls. "Take off the jacket! Grownups are stupid anyway. And Alice and Derrick don't really want me here either. They just know I'll get into trouble with a babysitter. Fluffy's a real jerk. We're mortal enemies!" That one came from a movie. She thought it was neat he talked in his head, she silently rooted for him to take off his jacket and cause a stir. As if her feathers and weird skin didn't cause enough stares.

Just take it off...? The concept seemed foreign to him. Sure, as a toddler he'd been quite disobedient for Myrtle and Christopher, but he had always done what his mother or father told him to do. He looked over at them, seemingly happy with their friends, and felt the rage boil up again. Without a word he pulled the jacket off quickly, almost violently, and tossed it on the floor next to him.
Immediately his leathery white wings spread out, stretching in the new space. "They are stupid." he nodded in agreement, folding his wings in such a way that made the eye markings on the backs become visible. "Hahaa... I'm mortal enemies with Myrtle and Christopher. They're old. And all gray... and really grouchy." He shook his head with a frown.

"Old people are gross and weird." Cambria said decisively. This kid was ok. She liked that he took off his jacket, his wings must've been really cramped. His eye markings were interesting and she had to resist pulling his tail to see if he yowled like Fluffy. "Have you tried putting salt in their drinks yet? Fluffy hates that."

"No, I haven't. I'm not allowed in the kitchen." his frown deepened. Now that he thought about it, he was really quite oppressed in his own home, which didn't seem right according to all the books he'd read. This caused his tail to swish about in annoyance, which managed to draw the attention of his father.
Edgar's face turned so red with rage one might think his head was going to explode, but he remained silent and instead shot death glares at the two of them. Tobi, of course, felt his father's gaze but met it with one of defiance.

Cambria followed his gaze and saw some man turning bright red and glaring at them. Marvelous! She squeezed her eyes shut and stuck her tongue out at him, Nyah!!! Then turned back to comment about how silly it was that he wasn't allowed in the kitchen but was distracted by the way his tail was thrashing. Resiiiist! She must resist!
Alas she failed, caught the waving tail and couldn't help but give it a little tug to see if it really was attached.

Edgar near about marched over and gave that girl a piece of his mind, but was distracted when a rather friendly coworker called him over. For the time being, he'd have to suffer knowing that Tobias's freakish limbs were visible to all.
Tobias felt a sharp tug to his tail, which caused him to react with yanking it away and emitting a high pitched screech directed only at Cambria, one that was similar to his other ability that was just meant to cause a sharp pain in the brain, but thankfully it wasn't actually that one... "Why would you do that?! This thing is sensitive!" He hissed mentally and reached back to rub the base of his tail with a bit of a pout.

She couldn't help but giggle. He really did yowl just like Fluffy. Awesome. "I couldn't really help it. It was there! You yowled just like Fluffy. Sorry if it hurt though. I couldn't resist! I tried." She really had. She just failed.

"I shouldn't think you'd like it very much if I yanked on your hair, now would you?" He huffed a bit and folded his arms. "You can touch, just don't... pull. It hurts when that happens." He'd already had many bad experiences with Myrtle yanking his tail to get him to listen up.
