Name: Linnea Age: 40 Gender: Female Prisoner, Guard or Wingrider? Wingrider. At what age did they Impress? 27 ( Gilurith’s clutch of Turn 28 )
History: The oldest child of a pair of wherguards who got together shortly after being sent to the prison, Linnea has spent her entire life on the Nowhere Islands. Her childhood was a happy one, free from want or tragedy, and it caused her to develop into the kind woman she is today. Growing up, her parents had hopes that Linnea, and indeed all of their children, would eventually become wherguards like them, but it did not take many turns for them to realize their eldest daughter was too soft-hearted to make a living out of being a guard. Instead, she expressed interest in becoming a Healer. Scuffles between prisoners and guards, not to mention the violent Hatchings, forced a great need for Healers on the islands, and so she was readily accepted as an apprentice when she was old enough.
Linnea proved to be an apt pupil and loved her Craft. Caring for people seemed to be her calling, so much that rather than joining the Candidates when Hatchings rolled around, she opted to remain on the sidelines and care for those who were wounded in the events. Dragons were beautiful, magnificent creatures, but riding one wasn't for her; or so she thought.
When Linnea was 20, a wherguard named Kior, along with his blue Kiosk, were transferred to the islands. Within a sevenday of his being there, the inexperienced wherguard was injured, and Linnea was assigned to care for him. Even though Kior's face was bloodied, the young woman was instantly attracted to him, and it was shortly after his release from the infirmary that the two became a couple. Though their jobs could sometimes separate them for days at a time – incompatible shifts and all of that – Linnea felt that their relationship was the strongest on the island despite it all. This mindset was only strengthened when in their fifth turn together, Linnea became pregnant at 25 turns old. She was overjoyed, and was fully prepared to raise a happy little family with Kior.
Of course, this dream was shattered when during her eighth month of pregnancy, Linnea returned from the infirmary early to find Kior rolling in the furs with another woman. After a heated argument, the man finally confessed that he had been unfaithful all along, and the “fat bovine” state of Linnea's maternal body had only enhanced his want to seek pleasure elsewhere. Brokenhearted, Linnea separated from him immediately. A little over a month later, she delivered their daughter, Kellon, and though she still felt spurned by Kior the woman still wanted the girl to know her father. Surprisingly, Kior felt the same way and the ex-couple set up a system assuring the child would spend adequate time with each parent while maintaining as little personal contact with each other. Pern version of joint custody, yo.
For the next two turns, Linnea concentrated on raising Kellon and advancing her healing skills. Things were looking well for her, the possibility of a promotion to one of the head Healers on the islands was hovering on the horizon...until Gilurith's first clutch. At this Hatching, Linnea was alongside the other Healers as she had always been for each previous clutch, never expecting this one to turn out any differently. Shortly into the event, a purple hatchling was spilled onto the Sands, and the perplexed youngling went headlong into the group of Candidates crowding around him. However, just as Linnea was waiting to find out who had Impressed the young dragon, she was shocked to feel the connection of minds and hear a voice in her head: Linnea...Your Purkleth is trying to reach you, he is, but there's so many here and he doesn't know what to do and if only you could wait a little longer!
And, completely without warning, Linnea began her life as a dragonrider. Though at first it was overwhelming (you try raising a toddler and young dragon at the same time), her infinite patience and understanding proved useful and things calmed down once Purkleth exited Weyrlinghood. Now it has been thirteen turns since that fateful day, and though her purple dragon has his moments and healing is something of a hobby, Linnea is convinced it's a better life than any with Kior could have ever been.
Appearance: Linnea is taller for a woman, but her personality negates any intimidation possibly caused by her height. Though slender, she is surprisingly muscled from participating in regular Wing exercise, not to mention the extra practice that Purkleth requires. Her classic heart-shaped face and round-tipped nose look sweet, and overall Linnea looks like the simple, warmhearted woman that she is.
She wears her wavy brown hair slightly above her shoulders. A few grey hairs have begun to sneak in here and there, but she doesn't really care. She has blue eyes with a few lines in the corners and a few more lines around her mouth. Nothing too noticeable, until one looks closely. After all, she’s only forty, and still going strong.
Her taste in clothes tends to be simple lines and solid colors. She’s not one for patterns. She leans toward neutral colors (black, brown, grey) but every so often she’ll wear bold reds or dazzling blues, particularly for special events. High fashion isn't much of a concern on the islands, and so she saves her formal wear for when it's most needed.
Personality: A kind, well-mannered woman, Linnea is a naturally good-hearted spirit who just wants to live her life as peacefully as possible. While she's not soft-spoken or shy, she can be described as reserved, and isn't one to be seen cajoling and carrying on with constant smiles and laughter. She prefers a kind word to a stranger, a squeeze of the shoulder, and an understanding ear when it's needed. She's good at communication and avoiding misunderstandings, even with small gestures such as those, and generally she doesn't need to openly display her emotions for others to know she means well.
To outsiders, although kind and friendly towards almost everyone, she does not open up easily, especially concerning personal matters. She'll talk about the weather and other such subjects for days, but when asked about her daughter she'll offer a curt “She's doing well” and move on to something else to chat about. Relationships with her taking the planting of the seed, watering it, and letting it grow until it finally blooms, mostly due to the betrayal of Kior. She takes time to get to know, and though it can be well worth the effort, it may seem tedious and unnecessary when she refuses to girltalk about “those stupid men!” when a group of women get together.
She is of keen intelligence, and is ever the one to immerse herself into deep, intellectual conversations with others. She prefers objective topics, centered around facts and philosophy rather than personal anecdotes, and knows a surprising amount of random trivia about various things. Do not think she is annoyed by stupidity, however. Linnea was blessed with a seemingly infinite amount of patience, and it allows her to withstand almost any character of the sort. When she's faced with an less-than-knowledgeable person, she'll gently correct them and attempt to move them towards understanding. She disapproves of those who are willfully ignorant and uninterested in learning, rather than simply not knowing, and it is with these people that her impatient side can be seen. These are the true idiots, and though she will not directly confront them, she will try to drop subtle hints in order to ignite possible self-improvement. She's wary of speaking her opinion, and especially of starting arguments, with strangers, and fears that any straight intervention she attempts would cause an altercation.

Dragon Name: Purkleth Dragon Image: UM.
Dragon Personality: Purkleth tries really hard. He just can’t do much. The purple dragon will give things his all, because he so very much wants to do something right, but he seems doomed to never do them competently. He’s persistent, and will try time and time again, but generally with failing results. His rider will claim Purkleth isn’t stupid, and just a “slow learner.” However, the dragon doesn’t seem to have as much intelligence as the average dragon, and he’s just unfortunate in the fact that learning simply doesn’t come easy or naturally to him. Where it might take one dragon a week to learn something, it’ll take Purkleth half a turn. Repetition is the best way for him to learn things, and he’ll chant mantras of instructions in his head over and over to keep it fresh in his mind. Creativity really isn’t his thing and the moment he steps out of the box disaster will be soon to follow. It’s best to just get him in a routine and make sure he sticks with it. Trying new things can be most dangerous when it comes to him, and all actions that are unfamiliar to him are generally messed up several times. If he has to practice close quarters flying with his wing, it’ll be best to have him practice days before hand to avoid having him take out half the wing.
Because of his tendency to fail, insecurity and fear will plague him. Purkleth is well aware that he isn’t the smartest dragon around (despite what Linnea may say) and he really doesn’t want to mess up. If he’s asked to do something, he’ll be frightened of it – not of what’s actually asked, but the process it takes in completing the task – but will attempt it anyway. Change won’t come smoothly for him and any expectations placed on him will cause him to degenerate into anxious fits. More than anything, Purkleth doesn’t want to disappoint, and he’ll try his best, but the end result is always the same. He’s easily intimidated, easily pushed down, and won’t handle teasing very well. He takes it seriously and personally, and gets butthurt if anyone mentions how poorly he does at everything. Despite his persistence, the purple finds it difficult to stay positive and sometimes he’ll just sigh and say ”I’m just no good at anything.” His rider will constantly have to bolster him against that and remind him that while he may not be the best at anything, he doesn’t have to be the best to be a good dragon.
Perhaps the one thing Purkleth is good at is being trustworthy. He’s a loyal dragon, and refuses to divulge in the gossip and rumors that float around the islands. He knows too well the sting of being talked about, and one thing he does understand is that it’s not a nice thing to do! If anyone feels the need to tell him anything (unlikely), he’ll keep it close to his heart and never whisper a word to anyone – however, it’s even more unlikely anyone would suspect Purkleth, of all dragons, of knowing “juicy secrets” and it’s not exactly hard for him to keep his secrets when no one is even seeking them out. In general social situations, Purkleth is less great. He’s awkward (though not in the creepy stalker way) and can sometimes say things that aren’t appropriate for the setting. He’s kind and means well, but doesn’t really understand that complimenting a green’s lovely hide rather than her toes is probably the best way to go. He, obviously, also fails with the ladies, and though he tries at it, like everything else, his method of courtship typically raises brows rather than winning hearts.
Why this rider? Who but Linnea? Purkleth needed her. Linnea has all of the patience she needs to deal with Purkleth's constant failures, and she'll never feel disheartened when he doesn't succeed. Her kindness will help bolster him when he's feeling particularly useless, and she'll always remind him that he's everything to her. As long as he keeps trying to improve himself and learn, she'll be happy even if it takes a thousand tries. And it probably will. She'll encourage him every step of the way, but won't be too disappointed when things don't turn out like she wants them to. Linnea's intelligence help make up for Purkleth's somewhat lack of it, and she'll be able to guide him along during tough times and choices. Choosing an older rider, rather than a young upstart, was probably the wisest choice Purkleth has ever made. At twenty-seven, Linnea was settled into her life, and was not seeking the life of a dragonrider to chase dreams of grandeur. Even as a hatchling, Purkleth knew he would never be able to help someone achieve great feats. Instead, he chose a mature woman who would not be held back by him, because the last thing Purkleth wants to be is a disappointment.
Linnea appreciates Purkleth's honest nature, and knows that she'll never be hurt by him. She can relay all of her feelings to him – her worst fears, her greatest loves, everything – and feels comforted by the fact that he'll remain tight-lipped on it. His constant desire to learn, even if that learning can take a looong time, delights her, and she enjoys being a teacher to the purple dragon.
Anything else: U SO AWSUM.
