Name: J'aro
Age: Assumed 30-31
Gender: Male
Prisoner or Guard or Wingrider? Whitemaster / White Guard
At what age did they Impress? Assumed 20
History: Jasaro is, by birth, not native to the island. His mother - a greenrider - was arrested for attempted murder for reasons he still doesn't know. With his father nowhere in sight, they were forced to take the baby with them in the process of arresting her. When asked how old her offspring was, the woman didn't answer. She didn't answer much of anything.
They determined the child was probably one turn, give or take a couple months, He was passed along to a well-educated harper woman. She described Jasaro as an upbeat, happy child most of the time, but extremely clingy and prone to bouts of loneliness if left by himself, no matter how brief that solitude was.
A popular rumor in present day is that Jasaro was once adopted by Delfar, the very same man who died under the name of D'far after making the first white Impression and caving under the strain of his injuries shortly thereafter. Not only did Jasaro never live under the same roof, D'far was not one of his many childhood friends - he never so much as had a conversation with the man.
None the less, he was inspired by his adventurous spirit and went on to make the second white Impression in history, and the first in which the rider did not die in the aftermath. Later, he would come to regret his decision and became responsible for the formation of 'The White Guard'. The Guard watches over prisoner's dragons and promotes education on the subject of white dragons. In reality, J'aro founded the guard to scare off potential candidates and try to wipe out the color entirely.
J'aro's personality, in the public eye, changed dramatically over a very short time, leaving his old acquaintances to wonder where their peppy, free-spirited friend went.
Appearance: J'aro salvaged his face entirely during his Impression, but his body was not so lucky. His right arm is horribly scarred from the event, as his most of his lower chest, back and stomach. His left leg was also maimed considerably; he favors the right and, on especially bad days, walks with a limp. He covers his disfigurement at all times. The hottest day on the island means he'll suffer through roasting under his layered, concealing clothing.
The whiterider stands at 5'8, and has become less muscled over the years as his injuries prevent the extensive exercise required to maintain such a physique.
His face is more long than round, with a pointed chin and high nose. His hair is normally tied back somehow, but if left alone it reaches past his shoulder, a violating orange color if there ever was one. His eyes are a grass green and his skin is peach.
Personality:
: razz ublic::
A young candidate once asked a grizzled old greenrider what he thought of the Whitemaster. The man, having known J'aro for his entire life, scratched his beard and leaned a bit heavier against the back of his chair.
"J'aro? Hmm... That's a hard one to say, kid. Which version you want? The old one or the one now? 'Cause, as a kid like you, he was 'bout as bright-eyed as you could get 'em. Couldn't get the guy to shut up if you ripped his tongue out, I don't think. Then he got that white... I suppose somethin' like that will toughen you up. That thing is a beast of burden, if ya ask me, but he wanted one more than anything.
"Doesn't talk to me anymore. Doesn't talk to much of anybody, really, 'cept those candidates of his. That lot -- ha! I would hate to be among 'em, I'll say that. Too much hassle dealin' with that hardass just to keep a pet that hates you."
The man drummed his fingers on the table. "He looks like he's gettin' scrawnier, but he's got training from every fighter worth a damn on this island, I think. That's how he's teachin' those kids how to hold those dragons down when you they try and Impress 'em. I hear he's a bit easier on that boy, Roxyl, since he's the Whitesecond's kid. Some days, he don't show up at all, just leaves his back-up to do all the work. Not sure why - don't really care - but I've heard 'em complain about it."
He took a drink. "If I were you, I'd stay away. Trouble makes trouble, and J'aro's nothin' but trouble now."
And that, friends, is the public opinion of the Whitemaster. He's giving them no reason to think otherwise, but all is not what it seems...
: razz ros::
● Observant and intuitive of people and outcomes.
● Can tirelessly juggle many people at once; not shy of crowds or public places.
● Genuinely cares about the welfare of other people. May even care too much.
::Cons::
● Liar. Liiiaaarrr. Lying to the public for reasons that are selfish and selfless at the same time. Regardless of how you look at it, he's still lying. And, those kids he's been mean to might not care all that much about how he 'really is'.
● Jumps to conclusions concerning his observations. Although he's often right, he isn't always, and it leads to trouble.
● Can become so captived with figuring someone or something out it leaves his older relationships and commitments struggling to get attention. These can be personal or professional and it pisses off a lot of people.
● Slacker in a lot of ways; often late to things.
● Puppet to his emotions a lot of the time.
::Extended::
J'aro has intuition of possibilities and intuition of the people, much of the time combining the two to predict what others are going to need before they actually need it. If one of his candidates so much as sniffles during practice in a way he deems odd, within the hour he's sent word to one of the healers to clear their schedule. And when that candidate does end up needing them, he'll of course insist he just doesn't want useless, sickly people taking up his valuable time. All part of the facade.
He watches humanity as if his life depended on it, picking up on subtle cues that, when put together, offer further insight into someone's true self. The little things rarely sneak past his senses - he notices the glances between two almost-but-not-quite dating teenagers, the glare between feuding siblings, so on and so forth. Though, he can (and sometimes does) jump too conclusions to quickly about why someone was doing this or that. He may make things worse while trying to make them better before he realizes his mistake.
If not for the white dragon issue, J'aro could maintain a large quantity of friendships without an exhausting emotional backlash. On the contrary, being around people energizes him, being alone drains him and he can't imagine a world in which he has no companionship at all. In modern day society, he'd have a hundred facebook friends he actually somehow and another hundred that were friends of his friends he may or may not have talked to once at a party.
With how many real friends he can have 'restricted' by his self-appointed (but supposedly, well deserved) burden, it's less of an issue now than it once was, but in the past he broke many feelings by getting involved with someone (friend or lover), having someone new catch his interest and devoting all attention to his latest curiosity. Not on purpose, but it happens.
He just has that drive to know people. He'll go out of his way just in the hopes of figuring out what makes someone tick. That is a thing about himself he can never overcome, and his candidates and Weyrlings alike find themselves perplexed when the mean old Whitemaster is so pushy about why they weren't at class. Shouldn't he just be angry they weren't and leave it at that?
That's one of the times 'close enough' is not close enough. J'aro doesn't mind being late to meetings (he often is) or pronouncing someone's name incorrectly if it sounds right (and he will). He'll be more picky with his musical ventures, simply out of habit and his adopted 'mother' pestering him to sing 'correctly'. It's almost like a slogan: It was close enough!
There's no time to feel shame about being delayed when so many other things are still starving for his guilt no matter how much he feeds into them. Some days, it's impossible to keep his act up no matter how 'for the greater good' it is. Those are the days he stays away from everyone, locks himself up somewhere and spends most of the day wishing he could drink. Meanwhile, everyone speculates he didn't care enough to show up.
Why? Back in his younger days, J'aro was too afraid to tell everyone he thought he made a mistake Impressing his white. It was simple as that. He kept saying he'd do it tomorrow, or the day after, and next thing he knew there were more whiteriders. He saw dragons and people killed by these mutants he had once supported. By making the white candidacy so unappealing (who wants such an a** for a teacher?), he hopes to sway more people away from it. Once could argue this will only attract the mean-spirited who want to be feared, but... at least he can feel less guilty knowing if these kids fail, they weren't the innocent, idealistic fools being punished for their empathy. Like he was.
J'aro has emotionally isolated himself from his dragon over the many turns they have been together. He is not attached to her; he is attached to the idea of being attached. Seeing the way 'normal' riders interact does leave him jealous now and then.
For all the woes in his life, J'aro loves to love. He loves his emotions. He sees nothing wrong with living by your feelings and wonders if those who don't are just wasting their life. What is life for if not to feel? (Or maybe he's just an emotional masochist. Who knows.)
Other:
● Rajath is one of the more vicious whites (not that they all aren't) and requires so much mental focus through their connection J'aro can't drink unless he ties her down to the extreme so she won't get too out of control. She is so wild he has already accepted it as an inevitably someone is going to have to kill her one day. For this reason, he carries alcohol with him at all times, though he never drinks it. That way, when it happens, he can "look on the bright side" and finally have another drink.
● J'aro makes a 'mint tea' with a plant found in the islands. He only serves this when angry at the person being served or when anticipating an argument with them. It can also be taken as a threat.
