Lily was excited. She had told her parents she was going out to sing karaoke and exactly what time she would be home and they were estatic, so tonight she had a night of freedom and fun. Because really what senshi didn't deserve a break every now and then.
A new cafe, called Hindsight, was hosting karaoke night once again and word around Meadowview was that is was a ton of fun and becoming quite the hang out for teenagers. They had private rooms for groups who were a bit more shy about getting up in front of a crowd, as well as for parties. Lily, however would be right up in front with the main crowd taking her turn and showing off her skill. She loved to sing so much and she couldn't become a star sitting in the background.
Lily parked her car around the side of the new cafe and walked around to the front entrance, greeting the door guard, 'How strange was that?' and heading in to the cafe. Lily was greeted by music and the sight of a man singing Britney's Spears version of Toxic. She nearly laughed at his exxagerated movements, it was a very interesting sight, especially since the man couldn't dance to save his life.
Moving forward Lily took a seat at an empty table taking a few moments to look around at all the students that literally filled the place. She wondered for a moment if she would have to sign up to sing and even more so if she would get a chance to have a go on the stage.

Kirin Thompson had heard the rumours circulating around Meadowview. As the self-proclaimed Karaoke Queen, he of course had to attend and see what all the fuss was about. True, he usually preferred the private booths in order to avoid hearing tone-deaf idiots who belonged on American Idol offtakes belting out their favourite songs - and forever ruining them for Kirin.
Hindsight was nothing overly special inside. Nothing other karaoke bars in the area didn't have. Apart from a massive influx of students, Kirin noted with surprise. He grimaced. It seemed everyone else at school (and some others) had had the same idea. The place was filling up quickly and Kirin watched as the last free tables filled up before he could get to them. He scowled at the table thieves, wishing horrible things upon them while he went over to the alcohol-free bar and ordered a coke.
Drink in hand, he debated buying a second to throw at the idiot on stage, demonising 'Toxic' worse than even Britney herself. Instead, he worked up enough of a social vibe to approach a table that only had one girl sitting at it. She was a fellow redhead, though her hair was darker and shorter than Kirin's - or possibly up in some form of braids, it was hard to tell. Giving his bestest, brightest smile, he asked, "Mind if I sit here? Looks like this place was more popular than I was expecting."
As usual, Kirin was dressed in a skirt over jeans. Today it was a long, heavy skirt - double insulation from the winter cold. A cable-knit sweater topped it off, high-necked so that even if he leant over, no one would see the lack of cleavage between his silicone-padded bra. With his hair up in pigtails, he was just a cute high school girl, out for a fun night of singing.

Lily looked to the girl who had approached her table and gave a smile waving her hand at the chair before the girl, "be my guest," she said turning to the girl more fully and grinning at having met another red-head.
She looked around the cafe and frowned slightly nodding at the girl, "Yes, I wasn't expecting so many people to be here. Though I guess I should have with the talk that has been going around school. I have to admit it is nice to see another place like this pop up though. I am sure the hype will die down once winter wanes."
Lily turned looking to the stage to see the guy had finished his song and was now pointing to a young girl to come and have a turn. The girl was avidly protesting, but her friends pushed up on stage and it was her turn to sing.
The girl took a few moment to pick a song and some thing started to play that she was not at all familiar with and worse the girl started to sing and Lily's worse nightmare were realized as the notes came out wrong from the first word and Lily cringed knowing she would have to suffer through it this time.
"Next time, a private room," she mumbled to herself before turning back to the girl that was sitting with her.
"Planning on getting up on the stage or will you be youtubing like those four over there," she said pointing out the group of boys who were clearly recording the young girl's awful performance.

Kirin arched a delicate eyebrow. "YouTube is for people who couldn't be bothered going out and making their own fun," he informed her. "And yes, I intend to sing - assuming that I don't stab myself in the ears with a fork to end this utter torment they call 'open mic'."
Clearly, Kirin had a glowing opinion of the performers so far. He leveled Lily a challenging look, as if to ask whether she was here to be entertained or to do the entertaining. He didn't bother to check if she shared his opinion on the singers so far, assuming that everyone who wasn't completely deaf was wincing at the strange, new notes the girl had discovered.
"I'm Kirin," he belatedly introduced himself. He stuck out a hand across the table. "From Meadowview High. Yourself?"

Lily laughed lightly at the Kirin's statement, though she really thought that applied more to those sitting in front of the computer spending ridiculous amounts of time veiwing videos on you tube, but she did not voice this opinion.
She gave a smiled and nodded in agreement with the other, she would be sorely tempted to sow her ears shut if the rest of the performers were so bad as the girl that was currently on the stage. Lily felt a bit bad for the girl, who had not seemed to want to sing in the first place.
"I will be taking my turn as well. I love to sing and I can assure you it will be better than her at the very least," she said a slight wince crossing her face at the newest note.
Lily extended her hand across the table to grasps Kirins and gave a shake, "Liliana. I go to Meadowview high, as well. Nice to meet you."
The song ended and Lily sighed lightly, turning to watch the girl ,who was asking very loudly who was next. Lily looked to Kirin, as if to say you gonna go up, because if Kirin did Lily would. Someone had to give them a reprieve from the horridness of the last two singers.

"If you weren't better than this girl, I'm afraid I would have to throw my glass at you," Kirin said idly. It wasn't empty yet, but no doubt it would be by the time the current torture was over and Lily had her turn. "That is, assuming this girl doesn't get any worse herself and I have to knock her out to save the rest of us from the caterwauling."
Kirin scowled into his drink and spent the rest of the song sipping it through a straw as quickly as possible. It was up in the air as to whether he meant his threat or not. On one hand, getting banned for life from a place that allowed this... perversion of karaoke would be no great loss. Possibly ending up arrested was less desirable, however.
When the girl on stage finally, thankfully, finished and looked around for a replacement, Kirin waved a hand at Lily - an 'after you' gesture. It wasn't that he believed in ladies first, but there was still a tiny bit of drink left in the bottom of his glass. Plus, he had to think through his song choices.
"Don't suck," he offered as 'encouragement' to Lily.

Lily looked a bit worried at the comment offered up by Kirin, "I really hope that you are joking and if not I am extremely glad that I have been singing for as long as I can remember." She gave a small smile and hoped Kirin thought her singing was a good as most other's thought it to be, for she would rather not be hit with anything, but she feared for the girl on stage and hoped she finished soon enough to avoid having things tossed at her.
Lily grinned happy to take her turn up on stage and stood when Kirin waved her off, getting the girl on the stages attention and heading up to take the mic. She did not respond verbally to Kirin's comment, but gave her a thumbs up as she headed onto the stage.
She turned quickly scrolled through the songs choosing one of her latest favorites and waited for the music to start. Firework started playing in the background and when it was time to for Lily to sing she did just that without so much as a glance to the screen.
She started off soft.
"Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting throught the wind Wanting to start again
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards One blow from caving in
Do you ever feel already buried deep Six feet under scream But no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that tehre's still a chance for you."
But after a while her confidence began to peak as she drew the crowds attention and she started to perform a little as if she was really singing to the crowd, her beautiful voice getting the crowd cheering and all eyes on her. She sang louder and with more spirit, her eyes shining brightly. It was obvious she loved to sing.
"Cause there's a spark in you
You just gotta ignite the light And let it shine Just own the night Like the Fourth of July
Cause baby you're a firework Come on show 'em what your worth Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework Come on let your colors burst Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" You're gunna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own
You don't have to feel like a waste of space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed So you can open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow And when it's time, you'll know
You just gotta ignite the light And let it shine Just own the night Like the Fourth of July
Cause baby you're a firework Come on show 'em what your worth Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework Come on slet your colors burst Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" You're gunna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own
Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through
Cause baby you're a firework Come on show 'em what your worth Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework Come on slet your colors burst Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" You're gunna leave 'em goin "Oh, oh, oh!"
Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon..."
She finished to much cheering and enthusiastically waved Kirin up for her turn.

Thankfully no one had to find out if Kirin was joking or serious, because it turned out that Lily had talent. The soft start hadn't impressed Kirin too much, though it was a relief to have someone hitting all the right notes no matter their volume. Letting his eyes drift half closed, he nodded along to the beat. Lily seemed to gain confidence halfway through, though, shocking Kirin into opening his eyes once more and paying attention.
Quite a good voice, he decided, though he couldn't tell if she was used to performing as such. He supposed some performers got nervous in a new setting, but it seemed more like Lily was the sort who sang on her own or on a stage - not in front of a loud, noisy crowd of people who didn't automatically give you the respect the audience of a concert hall would.
That didn't stop him from applauding loudly as the song finished. Good karaoke should always be rewarded. Most especially after the earlier horror performances of the night.
He stood as Lily gestured to him. As they passed each other on their way on and off the stage, he held up his hand for a high five.
Kirin spent a few moments at the machine, programming in his song choice. His choice wasn't overly recent, maybe a year or two old. But he didn't have to alter the pitch for it, which was often the case for many of his favourite female artists who were simply too high above his low alto range.
Fast drumming blared out the sound system, joining by a loud guitar riff. Kirin's heels drummed along to the rhythm until the vocals began. "I couldn't give a damn what you say to me," he belted out, energetic from the start as he sung Avril's 'I Can Do Better'. Kirin was a born performer once he was given a microphone, making full use of the full stage. He made sure to give the YouTubers the finger when he got to, "There's nothing you could say that would hurt me."
Avril was a good choice for vocal range, though Kirin did sometimes despair at her bland repetitions. He tended to spice up her codas in the middle of the songs, but otherwise just enjoyed himself with something that let his enthusiasm shine through. There was nothing like being 'allowed' to swear because it was in the song, too.
True to the lyrics, Kirin didn't much care what the audience thought as he finished. He knew he'd kicked a**. And he wasn't here for applause - he was just here for the music.

Lily grinned eagerly giving Kirin a high five and a quick double thumbs up as the boy she thought was a girl took the stage. Lily continued to grin waiting eagerly to hear the other sing and hoping she wasn't full of hot air. That was irritate Lily greatly.
Instead she was presently surprised by Kirin's lower voice and very happy to hear the other could indeed sing and was quite a performer about it was well. She watched noting Kirin's energy and practically gaining a lesson from her. It was so nice to be able to see how something was suppose to be done, done right that is, so that she saw how to improve her own performance.
Of course when Kirin finished there was applause not that Kirin seemed to care very much, but Lily applauded all the same and waited for the girl to reach the table and held up her hand to give Kirin a high five.
"That was great. Seems like you do this all the time," Lily said excitedly before plopping back down into her seat. She wanted to have another go, but it was only fair to let other's have a chance even if they were a bit reluctant after to back to back awesome performances.

Kirin returned the high five as he took his seat across from Lily. He outright grinned at her compliments, still riding the high of his performance. Tossing his hair off his neck, he said, "Hahaha, pretty much! Though usually I karaoke in the places with private booths. Less having to suffer through the performances of the tone-deaf, even if it does reduce my audience." He sighed, before perking back up. "It's fun to organise a big group to go, though."
His glass was reclaimed and Kirin used the straw to poke at the melting ice. He plonked an elbow on the table, placing his chin in it as he gave Lily a considering look. "How about you? Karaoke often? Or usually more controlled settings?"

Lily grinned happily at Kirin decided that she very much like the 'girl'. It was great to find someone of a like mind. Liyl laughed lightly at the statement, she pretty sure she saw a hallway for the private room, but as it was her first time she wasn't one hundred percent sure.
"I have to agree, that I am none to fond of having my ears assualted in such a manner, but I guess it has it quaintness. I would much prefer a private booth, but as you said the audience is reduced. I imagine it would be fun to come in a big group. I will have to find out sometime."
Lily shook her head at the next question, "I have to admit, this is my first time out like this is an actual karaoke place. I sing often, but usually not karaoke. When I do karaoke, it is usually in the entertainment lounge of my house. No audience, but it is very good practice. This nice, however, loud and grating at time, but nice."
Lily whinced slightly as a very wrong note practically echo across the room, but she gritted her teeth baring it and trying to ignore the awful singing that ensued. "This place is new, so I am going to assume you do not karaoke here often, so then where do you usually go?"

Kirin beamed. He really was a completely different person when it came to his karaoke. "I'll let you know the next time I organise one. I'm always looking for new people to drag along."
He nodded as Lily explained her practises so far. "I'd do the same, but my neighbours complained too much. Apartment block," he advised her.
The idea of introducing someone - especially someone who could sing - to the karaoke circuit perked Kirin right up. "Have you been down to the electronics district? There are a lot of karaoke places hiding around there. I think because a lot of Japanese own space down there - great tech and great entertainment all in one place." It wasn't racist if it was true. And Kirin loved both types of places equally. "The better places are more expensive, of course. But I can give you some names and price ranges..."

Lily smiled brightly at the thought of going in a group to do some karaoke. A worried looked flitted across her face as she contemplated it, but she nodded anyway. She doubted Kirin would invite to many others that lacked talent and were bound to make her ears bleed.
"I think I would really enjoy that. I am all for any activity that lets me sing." She smiled at Kirin listening to 'her' speak.
She shook her head at the part about the apartment block, "No I do not imagine your neighbors would enjoy that very much. None of our neighbors are to close so it isn't an issue. I think I might go crazy if it were."
Her eyes brightened a bit at the thought of maybe visiting some more karaoke bars and she nearly laughed at hearing she could find great tech and great entertainment in one place. She knew she would be dragging Xavier along with her, thinking he might enjoy it as well.
Lily nodded at Kirin, "that would be lovely. I will try to visit one soon. It sounds rather exciting and I bet I could get my cousin to come with me."

"Awesome! The more, the merrier," Kirin beamed. Assuming they could sing on key, but he doubted Lily wanted to suffer any more than he did.
Digging through his small bag, he fished out his mobile phone and handed it to Lily. "Stick your number in. I'll call the next time I'm organising something."
He probably wasn't going to stick around here for too much longer, considering the poor quality of the other singers. But Lily was worth keeping track of, so it was best to get her details and add her to his 'karaoke' texting list before he fled for the sake of his ears.

"That great," she said beaming. She would have to grab Xavier for a few more singing lessons, but at least he had a good voice and would kill them.
Taking the phone Lily quickly put in her number and handed it back before fishing for her own phone and pullin it out. "Call me and I will save you number, unless you would rather just put the number in."
Lily smiled waiting to see what Kirin would do. She was thinking she would have another go on stage soon, but afterwards she would check to see if they had private room then head out.
