At the top of the biggest, steepest hill in Destiny City Park there stood a pair of figures. One was tall, and the other was less tall. Both of them were covered from head to toe in all of those (unfortunately bulky) winter essentials for keeping warm, and had doubled in their usual width. Two sets of eyes, one golden and the other a very rich dark chocolate, blinked out at the world over brightly coloured scarves.

"But, Vanessa, there's not enough room for both of us in there!" John Jr pointed at the inflatable tube that rested by his feet. It was very dark, and looked about as conspicuous against the snow as a lonely black dot on a bright white piece of paper.

"There is to," the girl scoffed at her little brother, and bent to climb into the middle of the giant plastic doughnut. "You can sit on my lap."

"…Okay."

"Wait a second!" Vanessa held up a hand to keep John Jr at bay, crawled out of the tube, and dragged it to the edge of the hill. It teetered dangerously, but Vanessa, who'd done this more times than she could even begin to remember, was confident that they would not slip down the hill before John Jr could scramble onto it. She bit her lip and flopped cautiously into the centre. If flopping could ever be cautious.

Smiling behind his scarf, John Jr pulled his toque down more firmly over his ears, and clambered in after her. One of his elbows connected accidentally with Vanessa's ribs, and she exhaled softly when he settled, mumbling an apology, onto her knees.

"You weigh a ton," Vanessa was exaggerating. But it was true that John Jr was heavier than the last time that they'd done this. "What've you been eating?"

"Whatever you feed me," he laughed, and peered down the hill. "Hey, Vanessa, there's somebody in the wa-

"HOLD ON TO SOMETHING!" Vanessa, who could not see the girl that lay in the snow at the bottom of the hill, bellowed as loudly as she could, and then pushed off with her hands. Together, compelled by the magic of gravity, brother and sister soared down the hill at something that Vanessa would have called 'extreme warp speed!'

John Jr, brown eyes shining with something not unlike horror, held on to the handles for dear life, leaned backwards so that he wouldn't nosedive into the snow, and shouted at the body in their danger path; "LOOKOUT BELOW!"

Snow angels were, hands down, Piper's absolute favorite thing about snow. She had a habit of filling her yard with them, giving them names, and making up intricate and elaborate stories about their lives and impending doom via sunlight. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunate for the snow village) the sun hadn't been able to keep up with her and she'd already filled her yard with dozens of the bell-shaped angels. At her parents' urging, she'd long since fled to the park where she began a quest to make as many as possible - a whole city of snow angels!

Somewhere along the way though, she forgot what she was doing. Instead, Piper lay in the middle of a half-finished snow angel with her arms and legs spread at a ridiculous angle, staring up at a cardinal as it chirped away on a branch directly overhead. It was so bright against the stark, leafless branches and the snow weighing them down that it was no wonder it had caught her attention. It was just so happy about nothing that it made Piper smile to watch. Then, a distant shout rumbled from the distance and Piper's smile faded to confusion. Piper believed in a lot of things, but she was keenly aware that birds did not talk.

She rolled half-way onto her side to peer up at the hill and only had time for a priceless, shocked look to come over her face before she rolled frantically out of the path of the speeding tube-sled. Once she thought she had rolled far enough away, she curled up and tucked her arms and legs together, covering her head as if she feared they might make a sudden jump off course and plow her right over anyway. She stayed like that until the sudden 'WOOSH' of the tube sped past her and overhead the cardinal leaped off the branch in a flurry of flapping feathers.

Ever so slowly, Piper uncurled and peered at the two individuals that had almost killed her via tube-plowing. She stopped halfway to investigation though, instead frowning at the smear that had been her latest masterpiece.

"Awww, you guys ruined my snow angel.." Just ignore the fact that there were probably a dozen or more surrounding that particular one.

John Jr held his breath and watched through wide eyes as he waited for Piper to get the hell out of the way, all the while trying to ignore the joyous peels of laughter that issued from someplace over his shoulder. The hill they zoomed down was very steep, and he found little comfort in the arms that Vanessa had wrapped around his waist.

He appreciated the protective sentiment, but understood that, if they were to crash like this, Vanessa would probably end up squashing him.

She, it was very obvious, wasn't at all worried about this. Vanessa thrilled to the icy bite of the artificial wind against her cheeks, and to the way it whistled a warning passed her ears. The brilliant smile on her face was half-hidden behind her scarf, which billowed everywhere and whipped her several times in the eye.

It wasn't until after they very thoroughly murdered the poor snow angel and eased to a stop, several feet away, that Vanessa noticed Piper. And then she gasped, pointedly excitedly with her hand, and said a whole bunch of things that didn't make sense.

"Yes, I know," John Jr could, apparently, understand, "that's Piper- OH MY GOSH! Piper!"

Together, brother and sister scrambled up, out of their inflatable tube, and raced towards the blue haired girl.

"Piper!" Vanessa whipped off her toque to reveal her curly hair, and wrapped her old friend in an enthusiastic hug, "You're alive!"

Piper was halfway to standing when she was grabbed up by Vanessa and shocked out of mourning her masterpiece. It took her a few moments of being squeezed against the other girl before she realized who it was and what was going on. That familiar curly red hair brushed her cheek and she could only laugh, for once too shocked and pleased to find words. She clung back to Vanessa, her fingers curling into the other's winter coat.

"Well, of course I'm alive!" She finally found her head and heard what Vanessa was saying. "Why wouldn't I be alive? I've always been alive," she seemed utterly confused for a moment as she stared up at her friend's gold eyes. Then belated realization hit her and her mouth formed a small 'o'. Sometimes she forgot she'd been missing for nearly a year. "Right, well, the police busted that organ ring and I'm fine now." She smiled cheerfully up at Vanessa, as if that kind of thing happened every day, but even beneath that smile there was something.. lacking in her bright blue eyes. For it to have affected Piper, it must have been something traumatic.

Then she glanced down at the younger boy standing next to his sister and reached out to ruffle his hair with her hand. "You're getting tall!" And all the enthusiasm she had was back full-force, her emotions flipping back to her preferred state of operation: happy.

When Piper laughed, Vanessa laughed. It was a free, contagious sort of sound and rang true with more than a thousand childhood memories. Piper was Vanessa's first and oldest friend. As young children and next-door neighbours they had giggled and played and gotten into all sorts of trouble together.

But that was before John Jr came into the world. Before the death of her mother. Before Mr. Rae slipped into his heartsick depression.

Piper had been there, through it all, and let Vanessa weep on her shoulder. Young. They were both so very young, back then, but Piper had helped Vanessa deal with her rage and her pain simply by being there. For that, Vanessa would remember Piper for always.

"I was so worried about you! When you went missing-- I looked everywhere!"

It was true.

She pulled away enough to stare into Piper's eyes, and gripped her friend's shoulders gently in her hands. Vanessa was a little hurt, truth be told, that nobody had even phoned to tell her Piper was okay.

After all this time!

"Organ ring?" Vanessa cocked an eyebrow, "What are you talking about?"

"It was in the news, Vanessa," John Jr said softly, and smiled up at Piper when she ruffled his hair. There was something like concern in those big brown eyes of his. "Awhile ago-- a black market trafficking ring. For organs."

Vanessa blinked and then, gasping, turned back to Piper. Words failed her.

Piper saw the big brown eyes of John Jr., but sympathy was lost on her. Just like Vanessa's gasping didn't really clue her in to the shock Van was no doubt feeling after such a realization. Piper just continued to smile as she looked from one to the other, simply pleased to be back with one of her oldest and best friends.

"Oh, yea," she waved a hand dismissively as if an organ ring was nothing, "but they must not have had time to get to me! All my bits and pieces are here." She patted both hands against her stomach as if to show that she was all there, then laughed softly under her breath.

She knew that people reacted badly to the news though - her parents had cried and cried for days. Everyone expected Piper to open up and tell them about how she'd been so miserable, how tortured she'd been, but Piper.. could barely remember it. She knew she had met a few people there that she'd never seen again and that, really, was the only sad part about the whole experience. Where were they? Who was that blue haired boy that haunted her dreams? Why did he make her so sad?

She glanced up at Vanessa as if she might say something about it, to see if she had any advice for boys and bad dreams, before she remembered that John Jr. was there. Perhaps, for the first time in her life, Piper managed to have a filter on her mouth. Instead of saying what she was thinking, she just put a hand on John Jr.'s shoulder and smiled. "It's okay. I'm okay."

Then she dropped her hands and did a little half twirl where she stood, thinking about what they should do. After all, she'd just found her friends again! They needed to spend time together! Idly, she chewed on her lip as she thought about it - ice skating? cloud gazing? fairy hunting? Then it hit her and she beamed brightly up at Vanessa. "Do you guys want to go get some hot chocolate?"

There was shock, and there was horror. A thousand images of contaminated instruments and vulnerable, screaming faces flashed through her mind almost at once. Vanessa paled visibly and looked Piper up and down in careful earnest, as though she wasn't convinced that all of her bits and pieces really were there. It repulsed Vanessa, who considered the health and safety of her loved ones a personal crusade, to know the truth of what had happened to her poor, defenceless Piper.

For a long time it was all she could do to stare, and wonder. She longed to say something, and erase whatever terrors lingered still, if they did, behind Piper's big blue eyes.

"I'm glad you're back," Vanessa found her voice at last, and smiled fondly down at her oldest friend, "and that the police busted those guys."

Probably they were in jail now. Super Van made a mental note to find out. Somehow.

The half-hearted smile on her face brightened into something braver when Piper twirled a little on the spot. It had been so long since they'd seen each other, but Piper seemed the same as ever. She might as well have gone on a weekend vacation, for all that had changed between them.

"Hot chocolate sounds great," she consented with a nod, tugging absently on the mittens she wore. "We could go back to my place, and make some?"

Their home wasn't very far. And they would be more comfortable there than in a coffee shop.

John Jr went to collect their tube sled, calling out; "wait for me!"
PostPosted: Wed Dec 15, 2010 11:27 am

"Well, I'm glad I'm back too." Organ rings weren't something most people really ever came back from and, well, Piper was sure she'd used up a lot of her luck on the experience. At least, that's what everyone kept telling her - You're so lucky! Mostly it had just been tiring.

"Ooh, your house sounds fine!" Truthfully, Piper had never really been to Vanessa's new house. She'd been over plenty of times when the family had lived next door but after they moved.. the pair saw each other a lot less often. Sad in a way, but their friendship was strong from all the things they'd pulled each other through.

She had just turned to walk off in a random direction when two things happened: One, Piper realized she had no idea which way to go and two, John Jr. called out for them to wait. Piper stopped midstep and turned back to look at him.

"Hurry up!" She called back at him, then held out her mittened hand for him to take once he caught up.

Theirs was the sort of friendship that could not be strained by difference or conquered by distance. Shared memories and reciprocated affection tied them together like a pair of matching buoys floating side by side in a storm-tortured sea. Vanessa was comfortable with Piper. She suspected that, no matter how little they saw of each other, that would never change.

"Dad's at work," Vanessa informed Piper softly, eyes crinkling at the corners when she smiled, "He'll be sorry that he missed you, but I'll let him know you're okay and in one piece. And then you'll totally have to come over more often. He'll want to say 'hello.'"

Mr. Rae, like his children, couldn't help but be fond of Piper. She had a way of making him laugh.

Vanessa waited for John Jr as patiently as Vanessa ever waited, and then spun on her heel in a mostly graceful way when he caught up to them. His cheeks were already red from the cold, but they darkened enough to be noticeable at Piper's offered hand. John Jr was was very obviously blushing.

His sister had to cover her mouth with her hand to keep from laughing. John Jr hesitated for only a moment, and then took Piper's hand gently with his own.

"Alright, let's go," Vanessa piped up, and led the way out of the park, "I'm going to fill my cup with a bunch of those little marshmallows. If we have some. If we don't, I will settle for big ones."
PostPosted: Mon Dec 27, 2010 9:25 pm

"Aww," a little frown turned down the corners of Piper's lips when Vanessa told her that their father was at work. Why did anyone want to work on a snow day? Besides, she'd missed their whole family terribly! It would have been nice to have seen them all together. Just then though, the thought of family reminded her that she had a lot to fill them both in on. She was just about to tell them when John Jr. caught back up, his face all rosy from what Piper could only assume was the cold. The words died on her tongue, forgotten, as she frowned at his ruddy cheeks.

"Here!" Piper unraveled the snowflake patterned scarf from around her neck and leaned out to wrap it up around poor John Jr.'s rosy cheeks instead. "That should keep you warm, right?" She smiled, her eyes squinting a little with the action, and obliviously grabbed John Jr.'s hand again to tug him into step behind Vanessa.

"Marshmallows, I love marshmallows! Mom always buys me the colorful ones!" Then she laughed as she looked up at Vanessa. "But I can eat any kind, I don't think the colorful ones taste different." As soon as she was done saying that, a little pensive look took over her face. Hadn't she meant to tell them something? About her mom? She stayed that way, her face frozen as she trudged through the snow next to Vanessa with John Jr. in tow, before realization finally broke her tiny 'trance'.

"Oh right! I'm getting a baby sister soon!" Her smile brightened, splitting her face from ear to ear, as she said it. She loved to tell people about her little sister coming, since she'd never had a sibling before. She was especially happy to be able to tell Vanessa and John Jr. though because.. well, they were some of her dearest friends and they were siblings after all.

"Thank you," John Jr was absolutely sincere, but could also not help the slightly awkward note in his voice. It came out a little bit muffled behind the scarf that she'd so graciously shared with him.

He blushed some more as Piper tugged him along, and readjusted the inflatable tube under his free arm. Girls, especially pretty ones, had always been a particular weakness of his. Piper might not have really changed since the last time they'd met, but John Jr was growing up.

He, it seemed, had a fondness for blue hair.

"A baby sister!" Vanessa exclaimed and beamed at Piper. There could be no mistaking her enthusiastic sincerity for anything other than what it was. "Oh my gosh! That's so exciting. Wait-- does that mean Trinity's going to have a baby?"

While the unconventional ways of the Haswell family had often confused Vanessa, and fascinated her as much as anything else, she understood enough about them to wonder which of Piper's mothers would be bringing another child into the world. Echo, she suspected, was possibly too old.

Vanessa was no expert when it came to biology, but she knew that much.

Piper simply smiled at John Jr when he thanked her, giving his arm a little shake as she tugged him along. Anything Piper did rarely had any sort of implications, her actions were purely innocent and naive, and she didn't see any harm in holding hands with one of her oldest friends while they walked home. Kids did those kinds of things, right?

"Oh, yea!" Piper seemed surprised when Vanessa asked, looking back at her quickly with a pleased laugh. "Trinity is having the baby, how'd you know?" It seemed that Piper either didn't pay much attention in health class or she just.. hadn't made the connection.

"She's due in about a month, they say maybe less. She looks like she's going to explode!" Piper motioned 'exploding' by throwing her hand up and making a circle - she accidentally jerked John Jr.'s hand with her own, seeming to have forgotten it was still attached. "Oh, sorry," but even that made her giggle and her giant blue eyes scrunched up with the motion.

"Oh," Vanessa shrugged and readjusted her mittens so that they were sitting properly on her hands. "I just figured Echo was probably too old to have a baby. It's not… It gets harder, I hear, once you've reached a certain age."

Sometimes, like in the case of her own mother, age didn't matter.

But Vanessa was trying not to think about that. Trinity would be fine. The new baby would be healthy. Everything was going to be a-okay.

John Jr laughed along with Piper, brown eyes crinkling at the corners, and told her, "Oh, don't worry. It didn't hurt," when she apologized for yanking on his arm.

Probably, Piper could have pushed him to the ground and kicked snow in his face without inciting any real anger. Fortunately, John Jr didn't have to worry about that, because Piper was much too pretty to ever be that mean.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 5:10 pm

Piper's mouth formed a large, wide 'O', as if she understood perfectly what Vanessa was trying to say. Except that she didn't and the whole expression was pretty much just for show.

She just smiled then, unaffected by the fact that most of what Vanessa had said went right over her head. She turned that same bright smile on John Jr. when he spoke, but said nothing, lost in a series of half-thoughts and day dreams the longer they walked along.

Then, ahead, she saw the house she had only visited a few times after Vanessa and John Jr. had moved away. None-the-less, she recognized it, and it was only a few brief seconds before she was grinning from ear to ear and turning back to both of them with a challenge on her face.

"Race you there!" Then she was off, running ahead of them with a peal of girlish laughter, positive that they would both follow her without question.
