So, I just recently read this article on CNNmoney.com and thought that it merited a bit of discussion.

Why Employers Won't Hire

For those of you that don't feel like reading, the tl;dr of it is that businesses have figured out how to maximize profits with minimal labor and labor costs so they no longer see the purpose of hiring new employees. Not even during the holidays, the biggest consumer season of the year.

Here's a lovely little quote from the article:
Quote:
"There's no question that employers are being cautious about hiring, especially full-time workers," said Sung Won Sohn, economics professor at Cal State University Channel Islands. "They're not certain the recovery is for real so they're taking their time. And because of productivity gain they don't need to hire as many people."

The above line really irks me and just makes this whole situation all the more frustrating. Don't these businesses realize that the economy isn't going to improve unless more people have jobs and are making money to actually spend on said business' products? Economies aren't one sided, the fewer people that are employed the fewer people that are spending, the fewer people spending, the lower profit companies make.

Economies are like organisms of or even more accurately, ecosystems. If you remove one organism from the ecosystem, or one factor out of the equation the whole thing slowly starts to die.

"businesses have figured out how to maximize profits with minimal labor and labor costs so they no longer see the purpose of hiring new employees"

As if, yeah right and I call bullshit here and now. This may get ranty, but I have an example of how shitty the concept is.

This is what we are fighting right now at my work.

We have gone from about 80 employees to about 30. We are told we are "running efficiently" but it is bull s**t. Yes, the labor cost is low and we are saving money in that aspect. However, we already have reports (that are being shoved down our collective throats) that we are loosing money. Gee, I wonder why?

We don't have someone in the morning prep food
We have 4 less chefs
we have 2 less expo (and I am feeling the pain as the only one)
we have a TON less servers, we only run on one busser and one bartender (and the bartender also gets a 12 table section)

That is a lot of money they are saving. But what have the lost? Tables have sent back and trashed three times as much food as we did last year (they showed us the numbers and told us it was our fault). We don't have as many chefs cooking so they get swamped and have long ticket times. I can't send food out to a table until the whole ticket is done so we have cold food. When I manage to get a ticket done I have to try to drag a server (who have an average of 8 tables at once) to run the tray (since we don't have a food runner) and I can't get the plates on the trays fast enough since I am in charge of all 5 kitchen stations by myself instead of 3.

Then let us not forget, we have one person who cleans all the plates for the food AND the pans for the kitchen....at the same time. We used to have two people for that. So on top of everything above, we have to "stop the process" to wait for pans to cook food in or plates to plate the dish; all the while, the food on the line is getting colder.

So who won in that equation? The company who just saved a bunch on car insurance by switching to Geiko saved on labor cost?

All they would have to do is hire, what, two more chefs, one more busboy, one expo, and at least three servers. That will at least let us skate by.

This "maximize profits with minimal labor" is the biggest pile of bullshit I have had to ever serve a table.
