Name: Sammis Age: 19 Gender: Male
History: Sammis isn't entirely sure who his father is, though his mother has told him from time to time that the man was a dragon rider, surprising considering that she, herself, is an particularly ferocious little Wher handler. Sammis isn't sure if the man was a guard himself, or one of the prisoners, and she won't tell him, and actually gets rather touchy about the whole thing, indicating that there's some bad blood there, though given the differences in their professions, maybe it's not surprising that the relationship was short and hot blooded. His mother, even shorter than her son, shares his somewhat stocky build, and as a small, if broad in the shoulders woman, faced a number of challenges working as a guard, which she has done her best, and done her best to pass on to her son, to overcome by being as direct, dirty, and aggressive as fighter as possible. Where she doesn't have the mass to throw around a prisoner larger than her, she's happy to go straight for the metaphorical jugular, and will attack with intent to break fingers, knees, elbows, noses...whatever it takes to cause enough agony to give her the upper hand. She's always pushed herself to keep up with her partners as much as possible, to push past her physical limitations, and she's pushed her son no less, drilling him constantly so he knows the tricks she's learned over the years, hoping that he'll have to learn fewer of them the hard, desperate way. Sammis, still young, hasn't grown into the cold, sharp edged weapon that his mother is. She lacks his youthful enthusiasm and optimism, and she's afraid that it will come back to haunt him. He wants to please her, but they're both aware that he also has a strong desire to find something he wants to do for himself, and that he's not currently sure what that is.
Appearance: Thick, stubbornly straight strawberry blond hair and an somewhat ridiculously elfish chin conflict with his strong jaw, and broad shoulders, which taper to a more slender waist. He's short, at 5'5, but surprisingly fast, and his mother's stubborn drills have given him a strong body... one he's not in a hurry to wreck by trying to jump a white.
Personality: He's a strange mix of naivety and intelligence, observant, but still being on the younger side, still not entirely versed in enough things to put what he's seeing into the correct context, and he's perfectly capable of making errors. Sammis loves to eat as well, he burns off calories with a high metabolism, but he's not sure it can last forever. Still, he can enjoy it while it lasts, especially since he's... less than picky about what he eats, as long as he's reasonably sure it's actually food. Fortunately he seems to have a cast iron stomach as well, since so far he hasn't made himself sick either. He's stood before, but hasn't yet impressed, though it hasn't dimmed his enthusiasm. There's still time, after all. He's also curious about who his father was, though since his mother hasn't lost rank it means he was probably one of the guards or another, outside rider. He's only sure that the entire thing lasted just long enough for him to be conceived, and if it lasted any longer, it wasn't long enough for him to actually remember the man. He's a little guiltily fascinated with the entire idea of the prisoners, wanting to know what makes them tick, and his level of fascination has the potential to draw him into a dangerous situation if he lets a particularly charismatic person sway him too far.
Is this character being trained as a 'White Candidate'? No
Other: ((Ironically I woke up considering changing the name Sammis. XD I can't figure out a really good way to shorten it should he actually impress.))

Glad to see the Wherhandlers getting some attention. And the name 'Sammis' I really like. xD
A couple things.
On the issue of the guard x prisoner lovechild:
A wherhandler would be demoted if it ever was known her child was fathered by a prisoner. Sleeping with prisoners is an obvious no-no. So either she would need to convincingly lie and say it was someone elses boy (and they would need to confirm it), or she'd never be allowed as a guard again and be forced to remain on the 'living island' as some kind of labor worker.
If she said she was raped, the father would be killed. It would be staged as an accident, but one (or more) of the wherhandlers would smite him just in a fit of rage. They'd be well aware that this would hurt his dragon (the entire point the island's creation tries to avoid), but wherhandlers are far more concerned with other wherhandlers than some horrible person's dragon. At least, most of them.
We'll just need you to elaborate a little more on this. =]
On the issue of the coma beating:
Dragonriders are never really around prisoners for his father to have beaten one unless he's also another prisoner. There is Island 1 and Island 2; island 1 is where the prison is and contains (obviously) the prisoners and guards (who are whers, not dragons - since dragons can't harm humans their 'guarding' them would be pointless), and island 2 is where everyone else lives and stays unless they're visiting the prisoners for some reason.
If a prisoner was being visited by a dragonrider, the visit would be monitored and he'd be mauled by a wher before he had a chance to beat someone that badly.
Wherhandlers will let male and female prisoners together if their dragons are chasing each other, but that's about the only time they're left unmonitored. It's possible he found out about it, then attacked him at some point the men were together (during dinner for example).
He could have attacked him still, but being left alone long enough to beat him in a coma is a bit of a stretch unless it was really, really quick. We need a little more detail.
Thanks!

Made some revisions, hopefully he's looking a bit better! Was alternately debating the name Orlon, dunno if that's as much fun as Sammis.
