I Love Sailor Moon! (Duh!) However as I've gotten older and become more of a research-holic I've discovered a lot of things that really anger me about Sailor Moon. There are TONS of celestial objects in our solar system. For one thing, why is there only 1 Sailor Moon? Jupiter has 4 MAJOR moons all to itself with several other smaller Moons following. These are never mentioned. I've resigned myself to believing that Sailor Moon simply resides in an alternative universe. Several well known objects are never mentioned and quite a few planets are out right made up. I was browsing Wikipedia and noticed this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3753_CruithneIf you don't feel like read it, basically there is an asteroid called "Cruithne" that orbits very closely to Earth, and at one point was considered to be Earth's 2nd Moon. This was dis-proven, but still how cool of an idea would that be!? Better then these random made up asteroids that are just kinda thrown into the mix. Overall it leaves me feeling as if there was little to no astronomical research that was done while Sailor Moon was written. Cruithne was discovered in 1986, which is well before Sailor Moon's publication in 1992. Even before the recent reclassification that went on, which redefined Pluto as a Dwarf Planet, there are so many different heavenly bodies that have always been there that were never realized in Sailor Moon.

I think Sailor Luna has a nice ring, of curse Luna the cat actually was a Sailor Luna in PGSM! heart If it's good enough for a plush cat why not for the protagonist? It's popular in Science Fiction for Earth's Moon to be referred to as Luna, and the Sun referred to as Sol. Of course the blaring problem is that there's no Sailor Earth (or Terra) running around. However, if you're going the extra mile to have aliens attacking from different asteroids and comets and so forth, why not do the smallest amount of research at the local library to figure out celestial bodies that actually exist?

heart If anything I think it adds potential to further content, should they ever manage to renew licensing and start another show. As far as what they did in the 90's, well, much like anything else, limited research goes into anime, usually. Bits and pieces of real information are used to make something fascinating. And Sailor Moon did start with keeping things simple. Darion of Earth, Usagi of the Moon, and the Inner Senshi of the closer planets. As the show continued, we saw that not only did the characters mature, but so did the content. They expanded quite a bit over the series. I'm sure they had lots of ideas, but the show eventually ended. I think the focus, like most TV shows, was to entertain; not so much to educate or be accurate about the heavens. Even today I think they'd get away with it pretty good. I mean, how many people really know that much about space and the cosmos? Don't get me wrong. I love it when shows manage to do their research based on what they're doing, but Star Trek taught me long ago I guess to overlook what I know and just enjoy the story biggrin heart

The research was VERY easy for me (of course we're living in 2010 right now) and overall it just bothers me how there was little research done. The idea of Sailor Moon started off pretty simple, but as it evolved it added more and more astronomical aspects...I just wish they had been done/chosen better. The manga is where most, if not all of the astronomical research came from and I see little evidence of studying up. Ami-Chan would be ashamed.

On a personal note, as cool as it would have been had they actually done the research, I think it's just waaay too much work just to put out a simple comic book at the time X-x;

But you have to look at it another way too Sailor Moon wasn't all based on Spacial alot of Mytholgical stuff was there too Like Selene in my Mythology was based for Queen Serenity . But I don't watch a show to learn about things ... even though I like Discovery and things like that I prefer enjoying a show than it boaring me to death with to much detailing.

I applaude the Asteroid Senshi and their names, for the time that was very, very, very accurate! Why was that easy but that last nudge so hard to make everything flow so well? emo

The amount of detail that bothers me is actually rather minimal, if Sailor Moon was an entire Astronomy Documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman I would be unimpressed myself. It's really simply names that bother me, and potential storylines that would have been easily conceived with minimal research. High five for Discovery! Mythbusters Rocks!!!

SG Sailor Itachi is right. Sailor Moon isnt all 100& astrology. It has grecro mythology like the Moon Goddess felling in love Endymion who was a mortal Shepard. Also it has Asian mythology with Japanese folk lore. So its not entirely astrology. If that was the case, there will be tons of Sailor Scouts fighting off the baddies. I do love how Takecuhi created fictional planets, and yes they had scouts too until Galaxia destroyed their home planets and stoled their starseeds.

I just wish it was more astronomy @_@ personally I don't like the making up of planets but that's just my preference.

I think it would add a lot of new sailors to the mix if they actually included the other astral bodies. Sailor Titan seems like a good one....though I'll stick to my supernal senshi myself.....

You forgot to mention Rei's pet crows Phobos and Deimos. It was stated when Led Crow attack the shrine, that P and D knew here from their home planet when P & D were senshi's in training. Lead Crow killed them both and took their Sailor Crystals.
Yeah but 9 scouts + the starlights and their princess + asteroid scouts + the animates + cosmos. Yeah it will be hard to keep track if they include scouts for each moon and stuff @_@
Besides, where is the fun for people that want to make otuku scouts when all the planets moons are all canon wink

Oh right, I forgot to mention, though Sailor Moon is based on a lot of different mythologies...actually let's list those:
Greco-Roman Japanese Legends Western Legends (Fairy Tales) Western Astrology
She actually didn't get her facts right with some of that either. The biggest crime being with Greco-Roman mythology she got the powers of Pluto and Saturn mixed up. In Greek Mythology Pluto was the ruler of Hades, though he was sometimes also referred to as "Hades" who's the God of the underworld/dead. The opposite of Saturn is Cronus...now think about that. What does Pluto say when she uses her powers? "...Cronus, God of Space and Time...." oops.
So, again, please do your research. gonk
