Name: Mairin Age: 16 Gender: Female
History: Mairin's history contains little of note if you ask her. She was born to a pair of guards and raised rather uneventfully by them with mostly happy memories of her childhood. The politics of the islands and the dragons they concerned were of no concern to her as a young child. Mairin had stuff to do, things to climb, the waters around her home to explore and the like under the watchful ( if ineffectual) eyes of her parents flits. She first takes interest in things when she is Eleven and Fenfenth rises for the first time. She starts actually paying attention to what's going on around her and becomes fascinated by the wild white dragons. The fact that there is always a shortage of candidates doesn't hurt when she decides that she is most definitely going to have a dragon someday no matter what. Five years and some gained maturity later Mairin has a more serious and dedicated attitude about the whole thing. She stood for Fenfenth's last three clutches and has been training to be a whiterider for a year now. She's aware it may be a long wait before she sees if this new dragon focused direction in life pays off for her.
Appearance: Mairin is tall and stocky, with wide shoulders and thick sturdy legs. Countless hours spent swimming have given her some nicely defined muscle though by no means is she as built or strong as most boys who are equally athletic. Mairin has tanned skin from many hours spent in the sun. Her inky black hair is kept in a small braid that falls just past her shoulder. Warm, dark brown eyes sit above a small fat snub nose and thin pale lips. Clothing for Mairin is generally an afterthought, simple and functional is what works best for her.
Personality: Mairin is an energetic young woman who’s going headfirst into whatever the future holds. Daring and determined she’ll try anything not obviously fatal at least once just for the sake of it. Failure is certainly an option but failing to even try is not and she’s not too fond of people who shy away from a challenge. Fear and pain are rarely factors for Mairin and she often seeks out new things to test herself against. She’s not fond of the sight or smell of human blood but it won’t stop her from helping someone who’s injured if she can, anymore than the knowledge that she may get bit will stop her from sticking her hand in the mouth of a sharp toothed fish to retrieve a hook. Mairin is not seeking to get hurt but she accepts that it's a possibility when she engages in more dangerous activities.
Mairin has a habit of butting in when she thinks she sees trouble, though with her “Let me help you” can often mean “let me do this for you” or “ I think you’re doing that wrong.” While lending an hand to an ailing person can be a good thing sometimes Mairin refuses to acknowledge when her assistance is not actually required or wanted. She can’t even claim to always mean well because Mairin will meddle simply because she thinks something is wrong the way it is happening and she should of course fix it. She’s not above trying to correct others or nudge them into doing something a certain way if she’s sure she’s in the right.
Very much a people person, Mairin tends to get along well with others when not correcting them. She has a fairly open mind about most things and allows others to make their points. She reserves the right to disagree and counter though if she feels it's important. In regards to actual socializing Mairin is fairly chatty although she’s prone more to storytelling than gossip and she speaks pretty informally. In group tasks Mairin tends to take direction from superiors well and throws herself thoroughly into whatever job she’s given making sure her share gets done. She tries to be fair when given any sort of authority position with her peers and in truth is more comfortable not being the one allocating roles despite wanting things done certain ways.
Mairin’s not the sort to hold grudges if she feels wronged and she’s not the sort to be passive aggressive about her feelings. She simply states her grievance right away and then talks or argues the issue out till some
Mairin has an obsessive personality, at times she can cling to things beyond all reasonable need to. Adrenaline is one of these things and as a dangerous double edge to her daring Mairin continually seeks out things that bring her newer and stronger feelings of thrill. She’s jumped from the high branches of trees and run sprints till she puked in her younger years just to feel that surge of sweet, exciting, terror. These days she attempts more practical things that give her the same thrill like holding breath underwater till her lungs burn and anything she thinks will be useful. Her obsessiveness is not focused on that alone and can range from long amounts of time researching something, to prove herself right or find the description of a word she only half remembers, to writing and rewriting the same message or tying and untying the same knot until she feels the urge to do it again fade. Time and energy wasted obsessing on things is something that becomes a greater issue as Mairin ages and new responsibilities require greater time management.
Virtues: bold, tries everything once, hardworker, works well with others. Flaws: obsessive, meddlesome, somewhat pushy.
Is this character being trained as a 'White Candidate'? Yes and she's willing to bleed all over the place in a forced Impression if necessary since the ends justifies the means. Vomiting afterward is a very real possibility though.
She doesn't have a real preference when it comes to dragons( and thus stands for all clutches) despite seeing herself up to the challenge of being a whiterider.
Other: Pm crits please.
