Name: A'lai, formerly Adalai Age: 42 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Homosexual Rank: Rider
History: A'lai says he was born when Yuroth chose him from the hundreds of Candidates available on the Sands that fateful Hatching. On a less romantic note, he'd been thrust into life as a regular weyrbrat, chubbier than most and child to a mother who quickly forgot him and an unknown father. Adalai never thought about them too much and concentrated instead on not getting his round butt kicked on a regular basis for the nervous stutter and rotound frame.
At fifteen, he Impressed the talkative, overly nosy brown. Yuroth's exact words, loud in his head and cheerful, were: "Mine, it will be so much fun to make others see just what you are made of. Your Yuroth is here to show you the way."
The Impression kept previous bullies at bay and, at eighteen, the sudden growth spurt that sent A'lai shooting out of his clothing in both height and width solidified that the larger and stronger would no longer pick on him as he had become one of the larger and stronger. Since then, he lived the life of a simple dragonrider, never attempted to reach beyond the wing position, never took on a weyrmate, and kept quite to himself and his Yuroth.
Appearance: It's unfortunate no one on Pern has ever seen a bear as it is an excellent animal to compare A'lai with. He may only be just over six feet tall but he has the shoulders of a wall and a musculatur to match. While there is a slight layer of fat over his middle to give him the appearance of being soft but, if pushed against, solid muscle rests underneath.
A'lai has caramel skin with a few pale scars littering the back of his hands and some on his arms from early assistance in the kitchens as a child. Thickly curled (mostly) black hair is always tied back at the top of his head on a chonmage/topknot sort of style, let down only in sleep or bath, and a sporting set of mutton chops down the curve of his jaw towards his chin in a thick band of neatly kept facial hair. Why? He likes it. Keeps his face warm Between. Mainly, he likes it. Is there a better reason for it? Both areas are streaked with growing gray he finds more amusing than anything.
His broad face is strong jawed and lined from the general stressors of life, lips full when not pulled tight and down, his eyes a dark brown. A'lai's nose is the only thing recognizable from childhood, featurewise - wide ridged and button-like.
Personality: Include at least two flaws and two strengths. A'lai acts more as if he wants to punch you in the throat for talking to him more than he would like to hug you. He is highly awkward in social situations, his words short and clipped, tone low, and often over thinks what he says to the point his words manage to come out as either highly insulting or unempathetic. While he is, in fact, a highly empathic and caring individual, A'lai chooses to hide that under an unapproachable shell of seemingly stoic anger.
True, he has a temper. Yuroth manages to keep it to a low boil and A'lai himself has a high sense of self control but when pushed on to a sensitive subject or situation, it is not unheard of for A'lai to get physical to the point of punching walls and verbally abusive. These outbursts are rare but when they manage to come out, it is unlikely the person on the receiving end is liable to forget. The temper has made it necessary for self control and a generous amount of patience to be created and often used.
A'lai is jealous of his belongings, his weyr, his dragon, and would undoubtedly be a highly possessive lover if anyone ever got it in their head to take him to bed for anything outside of a mating flight. What is his is his - why yes, this is one of those more sensitive topics. You take his stuff? He'll take your face - figuratively speaking, that is. Cheerful, worrisome Yuroth is the perfect counter to his jealous blade. What better than someone who worries on your happiness?
While an outwardly grouchy man, if a person found it in his best interest to ask him a question, they may find A'lai to have a great amount of patience with assisting others. Stupid question? No problem, just don't try and take something of his while you're at it. Mess up? He'll help, quiet and without complaint. Little children can clamber all over him, weyrlings can nibble at clothes are hair, Yuroth can (will) prattle on and A'lai will take it in stride.
In short? Flaws: Temper, jealous, socially awkward, purposefully unapproachable Strengths: Patient, strong sense of self control, empathic.
Other: He's the rider of Brown Yuroth! :3

Name: Yuroth Color: Brown Build: He is small for a brown, whipcord slim, quite at odds with his riders more bulky appearance. He chases what females he can for the sheer thrill of the chase and not so much for the absolute 'goal' of catching her. Flying is fun and Yuroth is all for some good, clean fun.
Personality:Are you sad today? How horrible! We must cheer you up. Yuroth is one of those people (or dragon, rather), the sort to always try and poke his nose into other peoples business. Oh, he isn't rude enough to go talking at other peoples heads but he's quite concerned enough about the things going on to keep asking His on whether or not something is wrong and if it is wrong, how do they help? Can they help?
He acts as his riders conscience and keeps the older mans temper in check, going as far as to poke His in the back if he thinks he is going to cause some problems. As a curious, mild tempered (if nosy and interfering) dragon, he enjoys doing everything and anything in his power to keep busy. This often means he is working when things need to be (and even when they don't), whether or not the task is something of great importance. The simple things in life make Yuroth quite happy.
He isn't quite as chatty as some dragons but more than makes up for his riders lack of talking.
Impression: Yuroth was always a small brown to the point where his egg would have fit a large blue. He burst out feet first and wasted no time barreling through the crowd of Candidates to the quiet curly haired boy hiding in the back, invisible in his white robes.
Mine, it will be so much fun to make others see just what you are made of. Your Yuroth is here to show you the way. And he watched as that trembling face melted to tears and His hugged him so tight the infant dragon thought he would squeak.
Why Adalai? While it would make sense for an overly concerned, curious, nosy, cheerful dragon to Impress someone nearer to their own personality, Yuroth always insisted there is untapped potential in His, something no one else could see, and made it his mission to bring out the best in Adalai. The rider keeps the brown from becoming overbearingly concerned for the rest of the Weyr via distraction and A'lai himself as keeping the human somewhat social (or at least not always in his weyr) is a full time job. A'lai has the patience for Yuroth's constant concern and upbeat attitude while Yuroth nibbles away at A'lai's lifelong temper to keep them both well balanced.
He sees in A'lai someone emotionally strong and worth loving, a thing A'lai desperately craves. Without Yuroth, he would have slid into a person much less than what he is in his adulthood. Yuroth's caring and vigilance over his well being and his companionship helped shape A'lai into a functioning and productive member of the Weyr.
