This time line details Point A to the present of how new colors formed (as well as how the prison came to be the way it is today!).

This is not required reading (we know it's long!), but here for reference when needed.

Nowhere Islands is currently 41 Turns.

---
Turns 1-20
In which new colors emerge, a white kills some people, an escaped prisoner kills more people and the most heated debate in Pern history begins.

Key People Quick Reference

Norari and Gold Deideth - The reason for the prison being created. Norari forced her gold to use her abilities to greedily control other dragons. Deideth is also the first dragon on Pern to lay eggs that produce mutants. They die of old age.

Kourley and Gold Podeleth - Deideth's final gold egg. She is caught by the first 'blended' red and highly responsible for the evolution of the new colors. Her rider supports the efforts until the first white dragon.

Rossen - A dragon expert that is called from Ghenza to learn about the new colors. He is believed to be the most knowledgable person on them to ever live.

Guardmaster A'kellen and Brown Dewyth - Ghenza's first Guardmaster. He is the equivalent of a Weyrleader only with even more control. He is the first person known on Pern to issue the death of hatchling when a white dragon spirals out of control.

Nalina and Gold Kodenlath - Not to be confused with the Ghenza rider (though said rider is named after her), Nalina is in strong support of new colors at the time of her Impression and for much of her life. She is recruited by Rossen to help their advancement.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 1: The Island is founded to imprison the goldrider Norari and her dragon, Deideth.

Turn 2: Other criminal riders from Ghenza are sent to the prison. Their numbers total a trivial four riders, but it is enough to warrant an expansion.

Turn 3: Gold Deideth has clutch on the Island. At this point, there are no bronzes and so the clutch is sired by a brown. Among the few eggs that hatch, a very strange brown with red markings is born. He Impresses to a guard's son.

Turn 4: Gold Deideth rises again. There are still no bronzes, so she is caught by the peculiar brown from her last clutch. Few of her new eggs hatch, but among them is both a gold (Podeleth of Kourley) and mostly red dragon with some brown patches. Both dragons Impress to the children of guards that have moved their entire families to the island.

Turn 5: Norari dies and Deideth goes between.

Turn 6: Podeleth is two turns. She rises. Although there was a bronze in her clutch, she is caught by the red dragon to the surprise of many onlookers. A healthy-looking clutch is soon celebrated! The clutch hatches. There are only standard colors save for two unmistakably red dragons. One has brown on them, but one is only red.

Turn 7: Podeleth rises again and is caught by a bronze. The clutch is completely normal, but does not have a gold egg. The islanders wonder if this is the last of their unusually colored dragons.

Turn 8: Podeleth faithfully rises a third time and is caught by the red dragon. The clutch has mostly 'normal' dragons (no gold), but also contains one red and two new dragons. One, a very strange purple dragon with blue and red along his legs, horns, tail and wings. The other, a blue with purple markings.

Turn 9: Podeleth does not rise and there are no other golds to clutch. A dragon expert (Rossen) is secretly summoned from Ghenza and made to inspect the new colors. He determines reds, based on size and male-only Impression choice thus far, are the equivalent of browns. He inspects the 'purple' and purple-marked dragon, claiming both are the equivalent of a normal blue.

Turn 10: Podeleth rises and is caught by a bronze. The clutch is completely normal. The Island is thrown into a heated debate about if they should preserve new colors.

Turn 11: The debate continues. Podeleth does not rise.

Turn 12: Podeleth rises. She is caught by a bronze yet again. The clutch contains no bronzes or any 'new' colors, but does contain a gold egg. The gold, however, goes between.

Turn 13: The people of the Island realize unless a red dragon catches Podeleth, no new colors will be produced. Many dream of fame and fortune resulting from these 'special' dragons while a minority still protest them as unnatural. Podeleth does not rise.

Turn 14: When they suspect Podeleth is due to rise, the bronzeriders are ordered away by the Nowhere Island's Guardmaster A'kellen. Some refuse to obey, but even so, Podeleth is caught by the red dragon again. This clutch contains mostly normal dragons with a 'blended' red, a 'blended' purple and a solid purple dragon.

Turn 15: Rossen further studies the 'new' dragons. He spends a year studying the red dragons, 'blended' red dragons and 'blended' brown dragons. With the aid of the Guardmaster, he manages to sway every bronzerider on the Island to retreat the next time Podeleth rises.

Podeleth rises two turns in a row. The bronzeriders stay true to their word and allow her to be caught by a red dragon. The clutch produces mostly normal dragons as usual, but also red dragon, one purple dragon and two 'blended' purple dragons

Turn 16: Rossen furthers his studies. On Turn 17, he calls the islanders to a meeting. He claims that brown dragons result from 'color genes' mixing together, and that Deideth's age made the genes of her children weak. He goes on to say that red is a usually doormat color gene that was made visible thanks to the poor lineage. Having very little knowledge on these issues, most of the islanders come to accept his ideas as fact, but some still protest the likelihood and submit their own theories. However, the majority agree more 'new' clutches should be allowed.

Turn 17: Podeleth rises and is once again allowed to be caught by a red. The clutch has a decent number of eggs, but only a small percentage hatch before a white dragon breaks out of her shell and goes berserk. She kills three people and destroys the rest of the clutch before being sentenced to death by the Guardmaster. The dragon is then shot with arrows until she goes between. Among the survivors are a red and a gold, Kodenlath, who Impresses to a very pro-new color girl, Nalina. Later, one of Ghenza's future goldriders will be named after her.

Turn 18: With the 'white incident' to cope with, the debate on new colors is once again split down the middle. Podeleth's rider refuses to support them any longer, but Kodenlath's rider is secretly recruited by Rossen and an underground group plotting to further new color advancement.

Turn 19: Podeleth rises and is caught by a gold. The clutch is normal, but has no golds and only one bronze.

Turn 20: Neither gold rise and most of the year is spent arguing about new colors. Less and less attention is paid to the growing prison by the dragonriders. A prisoner escapes and kills two distracted guards before he is killed by another.

Turns 21-30
In which Rossen is sentenced to death, friends become enemies, blackriders drop like flies and the foundation for the beloved (?) White Guard is set.

Key People Quick Reference

Kourley and Gold Podeleth - A gold caught by the first 'blended' red and highly responsible for the evolution of the new colors. Her rider supports the efforts until the first white dragon. During this decade, Podeleth lays the first black dragon egg and later is killed by Kodenlath when they both rise at the same time.

Rossen - A dragon expert that is called from Ghenza to learn about the new colors. He is believed to be the most knowledgable person on them to ever live. In this decade, Rossen becoms so obsessed with perserving the new colors he attempts to kill an entire clutch of standard dragons to provide them with more candidates. He is sentenced to death.

Nalina and Gold Kodenlath - Not to be confused with the Ghenza rider (though said rider is named after her), Nalina is in strong support of new colors at the time of her Impression and for much of her life. She is recruited by Rossen to help their advancement, but turns on him when he harms some of her dragon's clutch eggs. She eventually becomes O'kar's lover.

Delfar / D'far and White ??? - Delfar becomes D'far when he forces a white dragon to Impress to him. This bloodly confrontation leaves numerous injuries that result in his death the very same day, but he goes down in history as the first whiterider.

Helen and Black Poheth - The second black mutant dragon and the first to Impress, making Helen the first blackrider. She becomes unstable as her dragon ages. Poheth is caught by a red when she rises and produces the first solid black dragon. Near the end of this decade, Helen commits suicide and Poheth goes between.

Palla and Black Gilurith - The second blackrider and the first solid black dragon. Near the end of the decade, she shows signs of insanity.

Guardmaster O'kar and Bronze Juwith - The man who is elected when A'kellen dies. He is against new colors. He refuses requests to bring more candidates to the island even at risk of new colors dying out, but calls for riders from Ghenza to help him and unintentionally brings more candidates as they migrate their families to the islands. He eventually becomes Nalina's lover.

J'aro and White Rajath - J'aro is the first to Impress a white dragon and live at the very end of the decade. He discovers whites are not coherent and therefore must be named by their rider.

Rulie - A girl who attempts to Impress a black. She fails and quickly goes mad. Days later, she is found dead by self-inflicted wounds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 21: Kodenlath rises and with her rider's urging, allows herself to be caught by the red from her clutch. The eggs are mostly normal, but contain a red, two purples and no blended dragons at all. The most peculiar of all is the suspected gold egg. From it hatches dominantly black dragon with bits of every color, old and new. She stumbles around for a moment or two, utterly distressed, then goes between, wailing. Both those for and against new dragons are intrigued for different reasons. Both sides become more dedicated to their view point.

Turn 22: Rossen suggests that the by allowing only the newest red to fly golds, their 'new' colors will progress. Podeleth and Kodenlath, who have become spiteful enemies, rise at the same time. Podeleth is killed. Kodenlath allows the newest red to fly her. The resulting clutch has no blended dragons and no reds, but does contain two purples and another white. The white hatches, screams, kills a nearby rider and after causing their dragon to go between, does so herself. This adds fuel to the opposing side's fire.

Turn 23: Rossen continues his studies and ignores protests from those against his efforts. Other dragonhealers and experts are beckoned from other Weyrs. Some are disgusted by what they find and some are amazed by it. Strangely, those that react badly tend to vanish...

Turn 24: Kodenlath rises and allows herself to be caught by the same red as her previous flight, though he just barely wins. This time, things take a turn for the worse. Kodenlath is heard screaming and screeching for her rider. It is discovered that Rossen and the members of the underground, knowing the gold could not hurt him, approached the clutch and killed some of the eggs. They are taken to a trial and admit to their crimes, saying they were concerned there were not enough riders for all the dragons, the new colors might not get to Impress. They pierced only the eggs they suspected of being standard color dragons with the exception of the gold egg in the hopes said gold would breed with another red.

As Rossen has no dragon, he is mercilessly ordered to death by hanging. The riders are imprisoned. From then on, guards are stationed around dragon eggs at all times prior to hatching. Nalina turns against the new colors and those who support them.

The damaged eggs are opened and discovered to be a green, two blues, a purple and a white. Many of the eggs survived the attack and each hatch. Among them is a white dragon that is forcibly Impressed by a man named Delfar. Unfortunately, he dies of blood loss under the name D'far later that day.

The gold egg hatches not as a gold, but as another fumbling, dark of dragon of many colors. Inspired by Defar's act (which he had not quite yet died from), a girl named Helen forces the dragon to Impress to her. The creature is called a 'black dragon' and named Poheth.

Turn 25: Kodenlath rises again, she is caught by a bronze. The flight is pitiful as the injuries sustained from her battle with Podeleth have slowed her. She has only a few greens and blues.

Turn 26: Helen becomes noticeably unstable as Poheth ages. She partakes in strange, repetitive behavior and withdraws herself from everyone but her dragon. Those that try to communicate with her are screamed at or attacked.

Poheth stuns many people and rises. Many bronzes and browns refuse to chase her, but most every red does, one of which catches her. The resulting clutch is, put simply, a mess. Most of the eggs don't hatch, and most of the ones that do all seem to have something wrong with them and go between. Three greens, two blues, a brown, a bronze die. A purple and a red Impress. A black dragon without her mother's 'color patches', Gilurith is born and forcibly Impressed by a girl named Palla.

Turn 27: The debate about new colors is stronger than ever, and now both sides also argue about the idea of bringing in new candidates from elsewhere for Impression. There are still a number of dragonless youth, but it doesn't seem like enough, and the new color supporters want their dragons to have a better chance. Kodenlath and Poheth both rise at different times during the same sevenday and both clutch.

The former Guardmaster dies. His elected replacement harbors ill-will toward the new dragons and refuses requests for new candidates.

Poheth's clutch follows the same pattern as the former one. The standard colors go between, as do the two whites. However, three purples Impress. There are no golds or blacks.

Kodenlath is caught by a bronze and has a normal clutch that mostly go between from lack of candidates.

Turn 28: The new Guardmaster, O'kar, sends a request to Ghenza to help them maintain order. The Weyr responds by sending a wing of dragonriders and there families to try and do some crowd control.

Poheth's rider commits suicide and she goes between. Few can accept it was anything but the dragon to blame, as Palla, the other blackrider, is beginning to show the same symptoms around the same time.

Gold Kodenlath does not rise, Black Gilurtih does. She is caught by one of the bronzes that dared to chase her and has a clutch of healthier dragons than Poheth's black x red clutch. Out of all of them, the only one to go between is a white.

Turn 29: Guardmaster O'kar and Nalina of Gold Kodenlath are publicly recognized as a couple at the beginning of the turn.

Kodenlath rises and is caught by his bronze. The flight is again a weak one, but clutch the goldless clutch is born without problems.

Turn 30: Black Gilurith rises and is caught by a red. Jasaro, inspired by Whiterider D'kar's story, forcibly Impresses a white and becomes known as J'aro. Later, a black hatches. A young girl named Rulie attempts to Impress her, but the dragon goes between.

Rulie begins to behave as a blackrider would, except she becomes mad much more quickly. A matter of days later, the girl is found dead by self-inflicted wounds. Public outcry concerning new dragons is louder than ever before. In spite of Ghenza's efforts to help, fights (occasionally to the death) are anything but rare between guards.

Turns 31-40
In which people revolt, the whers kick some a**, the prison gets fuller and more blackriders bite the bullet.

Key People Quick Reference

Nalina and Gold Kodenlath - In this decade, Nalina is the lover of O'kar and strongly against the new colors. Kodenlath rises at the same time as a jealous Gilurith. Through O'kar's power as Guardmaster, Nalina orders the death of anyone found supporting them.

Palla and Black Gilurith - The second blackrider and the first solid black dragon. Around the beginning of this decade, after a new black dragon has Impressed, both rider and dragon commit suicide by jumping between.

Guardmaster Sesabal - The Guardmaster, elected by the Ghenza council sent to maintain order after O'kar is killed. He was chosen partially as one of the few dragonless islanders. Although he pleas for a goldrider, he is ignored.

R'den and Black Fenfenth - R'den proves to the Island blacks do not harbor a gender-bias like golds when he becomes the first male to Impress a black dragon, Fenfenth. He begins to show the signs of insanity that become publicly accepted as part of being a blackrider within this decade. His dragon becomes bitterly jealous when a young girl tries to help him, and rises once a turn until she has a black egg. Then, she takes R'den and goes between.

J'aro and White Rajath - The first person to Impress a white and live. In this decade, J'aro admits to the Guardmaster he regrets helping the advancement of white and black dragons. This is not announced publicly. He is given permission to form 'The White Guard' to keep the new white dragons under control.

??? and Gold ??? - To be contested!

??? and Black ??? - To be contested!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 31: Aggravated by the islanders lack of attention to the prison, Ghenza sends a heavily trained group of wherhandlers to guard the prisoners instead. They are ordered to not only remain neutral to the dragonrider's conflict, but ignore it entirely. Most of them obey.

Turn 32: Kodenlath rises, but Gilurtih follows out of jealousy. Kodenlath doesn't clutch and Gilurith is caught by a red. Realizing they can be successfully Impressed, some dare to approach the white dragons. Others fearlessly hope for a black, but neither a black nor a gold is born.

Tensions between the riders become unbearable as they realize Gilurith is now the only dragon capable of producing a clutch. Nalina orders the execution of anyone involved with the creation of new colors, but the opposition fights back. Guardmaster O'kar and many people from both sides are killed in the miniature war.

Ghenza, outraged, sends all it's current councilmen to bring order. They elect a new Guardmaster themselves, a dragonless man by the name of Sesabal. Whiterider J'aro approaches him with the benefits of his dragon as a guard dog of sorts for the prisoners dragon. He is turned away until the following turn.

Turn 33: The new Guardmaster pleads with Ghenza for a goldrider but is ignored. The people of the island are kept in check by the wherhandlers that have been publicly permitted to throw trouble-makers in jail with the normal prisoners. Many do.

Gilurith rises and is again caught by a red. The clutch contains two whites. Both are Impressed; one kills the first attempted Impresser. A black (Fenfenth) is born that Impresses to a boy named Roden. The Island and Ghenza alike are stunned with R'den's feat.

Palla commits suicide on the back of Gilurith by going between days after the hatching.

Turn 34: Whiterider J'aro confesses to the Guardmaster he regrets encouraging people to Impress white and black dragons and asks for control over other whiteriders. He is granted permission to form 'The White Guard', which all whiteriders are required to join.

The White Guard slowly begin their first steps toward becoming the leading guards of prisoner's dragons. A green, whose rider was imprisoned for starting trouble with a purplerider, attempts to flee to High Reaches for help. It is then discovered, after the wing of whites chase her down and kill her, white dragons are the fastest on Pern.

Turn 35: The White Guard becomes the leading guard of prisoner's dragons and begins to work in coordination with The Wher Guard.

The island becomes calmer.

Turn 36: Black Fenfenth rises for the first time. She is caught by a bronze. The clutch has no golds or blacks, but does contain a record-breaking three whites. Amazingly, all are Impressed, though many peple are hurt in the process.

Turn 37: R'den displays the typical blackrider insanity. It becomes publicly accepted blacks negatively effect the minds of their rider.

The White Guard is a more organized unit under J'aro. They become a symbol of toughness that some of the rough-and-tumble children seek to emulate, making whites more popular of a color.

Turn 38: A pretty and gentle young purplerider seeks to help R'den. Fenfenth becomes visibly enraged. She forces her rider into further isolation and keeps to herself until she rises again. She is caught by a bronze and her clutch contains standard colors, plus a gold and white egg, both of which are Impressed.

Turn 39: Fenfenth rises again and seems to intentionally avoid all the bronzes. She allows a red to catch her. The clutch produces no black or gold eggs.

Turn 40: Fenfenth rises yet again, and yet again only allows a red to catch her. She has a black egg in the clutch, which is Impressed. Fenfenth then takes R'den between and does not return. The gold watches over the clutch in her place until it hatches.

Near the end, the gold rises herself and is caught by a bronze.
