The White Guard

The White Guard are a frightening group of dragonriders. The riders themselves vary in personality, but all were arrogant and stupid enough to Impress a white, so that alone tells you there's something off with each and every one of them. The dragons are fierce, vicious and even though you know they can't hurt you as a human, you'd have to have nerves of steel to stand in front of one and not forget with the way they look at people -- even their own riders.

Every whiterider (though there are few) is part of The Guard. This is not optional and if you dare Impress a white, don't expect her to live long unless you plan to join up.

The White Guard were formed at the hand of their currently, J'aro. He was not the first to Impress a white, but he was the first to do so and live.

Their main job is to guard the dragon's of prisoners. They are permitted to act as a 'pack', so to speak, and use force when necessary.

Formation of The White Guard

The first white dragon Impressed to D'far on Turn 24 of the island, which is currently on its 41th turn. D'far did not survive his injuries, but did pave the way for J'aro to become the first rider to Impress a white and live in Turn 30.

By Turn 33, when two more whites Impressed, J'aro had come to view his Impression as a mistake. His dragon needed to be handled like the most vicious, dimwitted of whers. She had no love for him that was intended to be had between dragon and rider, and he observed every white was the same as his.

J'aro did not publicly want to admit his wrongdoings, so he secretly approached the Guardmaster, Sesabal, with a request: he wanted to start his own guard in which he could keep a close eye on all white dragons. After all, he couldn't help but feel he and D'far were entirely to blame for their popularity.

Why White?

First off, being a whiterider is NOT for everyone. It takes a very particular personality to want to try, and a very strong one to want to succeed.

J'aro's intentions were to make whites look like some uncontrollable beasts so no one would dare try to Impress them again. But, his plan backfired; instead of being afraid, many people viewed them as the most fierce status symbol and wanted a white even more.

The reason most people want a white is because whites are something to respect, even if it's only out of fear. Same goes with the riders.

All About White Dragons

● White dragons are wild. 100%. They do not show affection to their riders, they cannot speak (and are even given names by The Guard) and they have to be controlled at all times. Think of having the world's most vicious lion, but being able to mind control it enough it wouldn't kill you or other people. That's basically what having a white is.

● All whites must join The White Guard. If they don't, their dragon will be killed by the other whites who are in The Guard. The Guard is run by a man named J'aro, who was the first person to Impress a white and live. The reason for this is The Guard is specially trained to raise whiteriders. The dragons may not be able to hurt people, but they can attack other dragons if not controlled.

● Unlike with other colors (except gold and black), there are no NPC whites. There is a very distinct number of them. See the next post for more info.

● Whites are a side effect of genetically inferior linage, as they have only appeared in clutches with at least one mutant parent; their father must be red or their mother must be black. They always have a single, very faint coloring. Official word IC is that they were stunted in the egg from growing to the color they were supposed to be. Strangely, they are all female in spite of having male colors.

● Whites follow green Impression rules, but are very difficult to obtain as they are near feral and must be 'Force Impressed'. Basically, a rider has to chase them down and force them to Impress before they go between. It is expected no one who is not specially trained as a 'White Candidate' will try this. (Keep reading for more info.)

● So far, everyone to Impress a white has been bitten, scratched, so on and so forth in the process. Those who try to Impress a white and fail are almost always killed. In short, potential whiteriders accept they are going to be disfigured in some way.

● Whites are green-sized, but they are faster, making them the fastest dragons on Pern. They do Rise, but they're dangerous about it; only really brave boys are even going to dare. They cannot clutch.

● Whiteriders have to go through special training other colors do not. (Black dragons probably would if there was anyone to train them, though.)

● Many people do not support Impressing white dragons at all.

Extra Questions and Answers

Will a white dragon really be killed if their rider refuses to join The White Guard?

Yep. The Guardmaster wants these beasts under firm control. The White Guard has proven the most capable means of doing that. In his eyes, if you can't follow the rules, you shouldn't be allowed to 'own' such a creature.

What if my character doesn't like the Whitemaster?

A lot of Wingriders don't like their Wingleader, but it's still expected they listen. Not every character will be best friends with any Whitemaster, but he's basically their boss, and you don't mouth off to your boss. (Unless you want to get fired, or in this case, get fired then lose your dragon.)

Speaking of Wings, are these going to be expected to fight Thread?

Nope. They're not even trained for it. It was long ago decided they're unfit for a chore like that; it requires too much communication and teamwork.

What kind of candidates are accepted as 'White Candidates'?

Nearly anyone can be accepted! OOC, NI dragons Impress ages 12-30; however, the people in White Guard have not been able to confirm this IC, and so they allow ages 15+ to apply. (They do know riders can Impress as young as twelve, but they don't want kids that young.)

If my character is a 'White Candidate' will they still be considered for other dragons by staff during hatchings?

Yep!

What kind of riders actually Impress whites?

Ages 12-30 can technically Impress a white. If an older character tries, they will be automatically rejected by the dragon, though they won't know why. In terms of personality, you're going to have to have nerves of steel to dare approach them.

We really, really want to stress we don't want to see 15-year-old boys fearlessly grabbing onto a white hatchling and being completely unfazed by the resulting injuries. Everyone should reasonably be afraid when approaching a white. Many, many people have died trying to Impress these dragons - and a lot of people have died just by being near them when they hatch. They are not painless deaths, either.

Part of being a White Candidate includes training on how to deal with trying to Impress a white most effectively, but fatalities and injuries are going to happen. A teenager isn't going to have the balls to have their arm nearly ripped off and react like some cliche lead shounen anime character that apparently can't feel pain.

What are the differences between being a normal candidate and being a 'White Candidate'?

White candidates are given special and extensive training on how to deal specifically with white dragons. They're taught how to Impress with the least injuries, they meet all the current whiteriders, they're shown how White Guard functions and so on.

It is said 8 out of 10 of these candidates drop out before the opportunity to Impress a white even arises because just the preparation for it is so difficult.

Can my character die trying to Impress a white?

Unless you request it, we won't kill any PC candidates, no. But by signing up you do acknowledge your character could be injured, and it might be in ways that will make them less physically attractive. People who want to be pretty really shouldn't try for a white!

How do you decide OOC which candidate gets a white in a clutch?

It depends. We will reward dedication. If someone is really, really active with their white candidate, we will reward that dedication. If no one stands out as exceptionally dedicated, most of the time we'll just roll for it. Unlike other dragons, whites have no distinct personalities. They're all kind of the same (batshit crazy). That makes it a challenge to pair them based on personalities like we do with other dragons (except blacks).

I have another question!
