Although only a few weeks old, little Egil was already making a name for himself amid the Shrinekeepers.

That name was Mud. Everywhere he went Egil was making trouble, distracting the carvers, picking fights with other cubs, getting in the way of the shifters as they moved the heavy shrine stones, ignoring his mum, and generally being the most pesky youth in the entire pride.

For his part, he thought himself the only real male in a shrine full of do gooders and weaklings. How he came to this opinion, he did not know, but he did know he blamed his dad.

After all, his dad had left him. Here. And took his brothers. Egil would show him. And he'd start by being the toughest cub around.

Which meant he also had to be the strongest cub around. Even stronger then that little leopard whose only goal was to move rocks around like the other big lugs in the pride.

Thus Egil found himself on the outskirts of the pride lands, carrying ever-heavier sticks around to make himself tougher. And when he saw a stranger female coming toward him, he did what any other manly male lion would do.

He roared his challenge (in a tiny little baby voice, but it was still a roar).

User ImageChipo paused in her tracks and looked around, tail flicking upward as her ears perked. She glanced behind and finally to her left and downwards before she found what had made the sound. A wavery smile widened across her maw as she saw the little cubling before her. He was so ... small!

Chipo crouched down so she was at eye level with the little one and cooed. "Are you lost? It's alright, tell me where you're Mama is and I'll help you find her."

Egil couldnt believe this. Was he lost? His "Mama"?

Was she cooing at him? Like some weakling cub who couldn't take care of himself? Like his sisters? He wished he had a bigger stick. Or a mane. He bet his lousy son abandoning dad had a decent mane. No one ever cooed at a lion that had a decent mane. Even that big green shifter male had a decent mane, and he couldn't even roar. No one cooed at him.

"I am NOT lost, and I don't need your help to find my mother!"

Visibly agitated, the fur on Egil's hackles rose, unfortunately having the effect of making him look fluffy and cute - just what Egil didn't want.

"You're on pride lands, dame, so you can just watch out! The border patrol doesn't want trouble makers wandering in here!"

To Egil's knowledge, no one had ever been turned out of the Shrinekeeper's lands- even hyenas were allowed in, for goodness sake - but having a border patrol sounded vaguely threatening. And he was perfectly willing to threaten anyone who cooed at him

A faint chuckle escaped the femme before she could swallow it back down. The little cubling was putting on quite the tough act...though the mention of her being on pridal lands did put her a mite bit at unease. She'd wandered where she shouldn't have once or twice before and she'd learned her lesson on looking for markers or catching sight, sound, or smell of any other indications that she was heading into lands belonging to others.

She rested her chin on her paws, ears slanting back as she widened her eyes and made a little 'O' out of her mouth, appealing to the cubs gruff attitude by appear frightened. Instead of the lighter-toned patient coo she'd used before she tried to speak in her normal voice - a task quite hard to do when faced with the cutest little ball of ornery fluff this side of the Sahara. "You wouldn't... tell on me to the guards, would you? What kind of pride do you live in?"

"They're the Shrinekeepers. They're devoted to finding a place to worship all of the gods in peace," Egil said in a voice that was full of as much scorn as a few week old cub could muster.

"And a lot of them are sissies but you but if you make any trouble you bet I will call the guards! Salma doesn't want trouble in these lands! She told me so herself!"

Then he noticed that she looked a little scared. Perfect! If she was scared of him already, if she started any trouble, he could probably run her off himself. After all, he was fierce.

"I won't cause any trouble, I promise." She remained low to the ground, not wanting to stand up again and dash the poor little lad's illusion of being in charge of the situation just yet. She realized with a little flick of her blue tipped tail that she was becoming quite smitten with the little one. It was all she could do to keep the loopy, syrupy smile off her face as he strutted around, talking big and tough with his fur all poofed out.

"So, what are you doing all the way out here at the edges of your pride? You must be the youngest boarder patrol I've ever seen." She made sure to sound surprised, realizing even as she said the words they could be taken the wrong way. Too late, though, they were out. "Would you tell me your name?"

Egil technically wasn't on the border patrol . . . but this lady didn't need to know that.

"I'm guarding, and I'm training! I can be out here all by myself because I'm so tough."
Also, cause the other young ones in the pride complained that he was too rough to play with and everyone else made him get out of their was and his mom treated him like a little baby.
He puffed his chest out a little more.

"I'm Egil. But I'm asking the questions here! What's your name and what do you want on Shrinekeeper lands? Are you here to see a Shrine? Cause if you are I can let you in."

He knew if he met anyone who wanted to see a shrine he was supposed to take them to his mom, cause she was one of the Guides, but he wasn't sure what to do if they didn't want to see a shrine. Salma would probably want to let them through anyway, but he thought challenging them for entry or running them off was a better idea. You couldn't let just anyone wander through the lands.

Brows lifted slightly as she glanced all around... there really didn't seem to be anyone else within sight. Someone actually left such a youngling to his own devices? He looked small enough that a very hungry buzzard could make off with him if they really had the mind to. Or maybe it was just because she was so much bigger than him that he looked so tiny.

"Chipo, my name is Chipo. I was just wandering..." She paused for a reflective moment, wondering what she WAS doing on Shrinekeeper lands. She'd been so restless lately, always setting out and searching for something but never seeming to find it. "I've never really considered shrines before... are they for the gods? Because I've never really thought much of them, either." She sat up a little, still reclined as she looked past the cub towards what she assumed were the Shrinekeeper lands.

"Of course they're for the gods! Who else would we keep shrines for?"

Egil completely abandoned his training stick and started marching back and forth, little chest puffed out, in front of Chipo.
"Salma wants all of the gods to have a shrine, so she's recruiting anyone who wants to come to help out. There aren't very many shrines yet," he admitted, "so I guess if you wanted to just talk to Salma I could let you in, too."

He abruptly turned "ferocious" again.
"But if you started any trouble, we'd have to run you out! And you could never come back!"

Chipo sighed, standing up again and looking down at the little lad. She shook her head and gave a faint frown, "Thank you for the offer, little...erm. Egil, but I think I'll be saying no to that. Why would I want to build shrines to Gods I don't even think about?" She bit her lower lip, glancing down at the little male with the sudden worry that he might be offended by her words. This was his pride, after all.

"I think I'll be moving on my way. I wouldn't want to cause any trouble by mistake and have to have you chase me out." She began to turn away, looking over her shoulder once more at the lone cub. "Stay out of trouble yourself!"

And with that she continued her wanderings.

Unwilling to let the lioness have the last word, Egil climbed on a large nearby rock, admittedly with some effort. It was a big rock.

"AND DON'T COME BACK, LADY!"

That would show her. No one snuck into pride lands while Egil was on the case.
