Three baskets sat on the ground in front of Parnasabari and she stared at them with horror. She was a mother. She had seen so many other members of the herd filled with such joy at that simple gift. When she first got pregnant she thought she might be happy like that too... then she found out about Hisoka. She found out the horrible truth about her mate that still woke her up gasping in the night. She was safe in the herd now and would never venture far enough away that Hisoka might find her and push her into that pit of corpses... but she had brought his children in with her.

She shivered, but it was not from the cold air. The baskets didn't even look natural. The only one that didn't frighten her was the one with her own lotus blossoming across it. The others.... one was black. How had she given birth to a black child? She wasn't black. Hisoka wasn't black. Where did the black come from? And the third...

Her eyes slid over the pale surface of the last basket. It was white, like her and Hisoka... but markings the color of dried blood spiraled across it. She stared at the basket transfixed. Who knew what horrors lurked within it.

User ImageSengdroma had watched the young new mother since she had come back to the herd with news of her new found motherhood. She was worried about her niece, it was hard enough becoming a mother, much less becoming a single mother.

Slowly, with a casual manner, she approached Parnasabari with a smile on her face. When close enough that she could speak softly, she addressed the mare.

"Good evening, Dear." she nuzzled her niece's neck. "You look concerned,"

Bari jumped a little at the touch. Her heart bounded... then calmed. It was her aunt, Sengdroma. Bari didn't get to see her that often since they were in different herds, but she had always liked her aunt. She pulled a smile onto her face but it was still only weak at best. She hadn't been able to manage a real smile for a long time now.

"I'm fine, Aunt," she said with as much "fine" in her voice as she could muster. "I'm just... tired." She gestured at the three baskets on the ground in front of her. "Still not used to them, I think." An understatement. She wasn't used to her baskets and doubted she ever would be. Not when they were a constant reminder of...

She took a breath and refocused on her aunt. She couldn't break down. Not in front of someone.

"Bari..." she looked over the three baskets and back to the mare. "They are a blessing, you know we are here to help you." She took a few moments to get her legs beneath her so that she could lower herself next to her niece. "You have not been happy since you have come, Motherhood should be a wonderful experience."

She took a few moments to watch Bari, she could tell that there was something troubling her, but she didn't want to pry more than what was welcomed.

"I don't like baskets," said Bari in a rush. "You can't tell what's in them, so really there could be anything in there. Skinwalkers, kalonas, snakes... maybe nothing at all." She was staring at the baskets in trepidation again. If they were full of snakes it would still be a lot better than what she had seen in some of her nightmares... little rotting corpses covered in maggots calling her name.

Her eyes grew wider as she watched them. "You never really know..." she murmured in soft apprehension. She wished she could just leave them. Give them to Sengdroma or someone else in the family and pretend like nothing had happened. There was no pretending with the three pieces of evidence sitting there in plain sight. She couldn't pretend like her lover hadn't turned out to be a monster.

Sengdroma became worried when Bari mentioned skinwalkers and kalonas, for the safety of the rest of the herd, she had to ask. "Bari, is there something I need to know?" she spoke softly, not wanting to sound demanding, but if Bari had bred with a predatory stallion, there was a possibility that it could come looking for the foals and threaten the rest of the herd.

"Bari, do we need to strengthen patrols for a while?"

Even if Bari had bred with a predatory male, Sengdroma knew that she and her herd would do their best in raising the foals in the proper way. She would do what she had to for her herd, which now, included these three new baskets.

Bari felt her throat tighten. She didn't want to talk about it... but it looked like Sengdroma had caught on anyway. It took her some time to find the will to speak, and when she did her voice was tight and stressed. "Haya knows about it. He said he'd keep a look out for... for the problem. I don't think... well..." She was going to say that she didn't think that there would be a problem for Miakoda herd, but was that true? She remembered the pit. She remembered all the dead soquili there. And dead foals. There was no telling where Hisoka would kill next.

"You... maybe you..." her voice was trembling now. "Don't trust him. If you see him, don't trust him." She had trusted him. She had trusted him with everything. She shut her eyes in pain. She missed the way she had felt then so much. At this point, she never thought she could feel that again.

From the reaction of her niece, Sengdroma could tell something was terribly wrong. At least she had told Haya, that was a good start. Sengdroma would have to address this with Maion later on in the evening. She didn't want to take any chances, especially with foals soon to arrive.

"Bari..." her voice was soothing, "Bari, who are we looking for?" She needed to know who and what exactly she needed to be keeping out of their land. "These little foals are part of our family now, we need to protect them." She tried to help Bari feel easier about being a mother after what she assumed was a terrible terrible mistake. "We can handle this, Bari..."

Bari sniffed and looked at Sengdroma with a mixture of appreciation and continued fear. She wanted to feel safe again. She wanted that more than anything else in the world. Maybe if more people knew then they could... do what? She wasn't even certain what she wanted done with or about Hisoka. The fear was too fresh...

"He... His name is Hisoka," she murmured. Her eyes flicked from Sengdroma to the baskets. His baskets. "He... kills soquili..." She hoped that her aunt wouldn't ask her to describe how Hisoka killed soquili. That was where her tongue would carry her no further.

Her words came as a shock to Sengdroma. Sengdroma knew in her heart that Bari would not breed willingly to a killer.. she must have been deceived into this situation. Her head bobbed a bit, this was definitely news that Maion must know. "Can you describe him to me, Bari?"

Though she had told Seng his name, he could easily pass through if given another. If they knew what he looked like, they could more easily identify him before he got close to the herd or the children. She could tell that poor Bari was not at ease, it would take some time to help ease the memories of whatever she had been subject to. Sengdroma knew that Bari would never forget, but she could heal.

To describe him meant that Bari had to think back and remember how he looked. She could certainly remember. She could remember the way the sun shone on his bright pelt and how in the sunset the streaks of red on his pelt looked more like dancing flames than mere markings. She remembered his intense gold-eyed stare... the long white streaks in his mane that danced in the wind.

She shut her eyes with the pain at remembering him so beautifully. Why did he have to have been so beautiful?

"He is mostly white," she said in a deadened voice without opening her eyes. "His mane was mostly black and short but he had two long white streaks. His eyes are gold. He has red markings like someone painted on him. He sometimes wears this white pelt. I think he wears it while he... while he..." She gave a tremble and her mouth squeezed shut. He wore the white pelt when he was killing people. That is what she meant to say, but couldn't.

"Shh Shh" Sengdroma nuzzled her gently, "There's no need to say any more, Bari. I will take care of this." she whispered to the mare.

Changing the subject, "Is there anything I can do for you? Would you like a break and take some time to yourself for a while? I can watch the baskets if you'd like," she nodded with a smile. Sengdroma adored foals, that was no secret within the herd.

Bari's eyes snapped open and she looked at Sengdroma. "Would you watch the baskets?" her voice came out strained and slightly pleading. "I know they're mine and I need to be a good mother... but..." She looked back at the baskets and shook her head with trepidation. Even getting away from them for a few hours would give her that much more calm. She desperately needed that respite.

"It isn't a bother to you, is it?" she looked at Sengdroma, praying that the mare would not change her mind. "I know that you have a whole herd to look after... so maybe my baskets aren't even really that important..."

"None sense, Bari!" Sengdroma smiled and laughed softly. "Your baskets are just as important as any member of our herd. You go on, you take a break. I will watch your little ones." she bobbed her head, her smile broadening. She loved foals, any foals. She would spend time singing and talking to the little ones inside of the baskets.

She softly nosed her niece, nudging her to get to her feet. "Every mother needs time to their selves once in a while. No one will thing badly of you," Her voice kind and sincere as always.

"Thank you," breathed Bari in pure relief. The tension seemed to flood out of her and her stance became less rigid. She could get away. She could have an escape from thinking about Hisoka and staring at the baskets that he had sired. She could be herself, even if for only a little while.

"I really appreciate it. Really." She was already stepping from the baskets. She smiled at Sengdroma as she edged further away. "Tell me if you ever need a favor. Or to know anything more about.... about him..." She wished she could run away entirely from the baskets. If only she could just leave them with Sengdroma forever...
