They had received their homework assignment a few days ago and surprisingly, Alcyone was taking to parenthood quite well. There were some things that were annoying but that seemed to come with taking care of a little baby anyway. It was her turn to take care of the baby and they were going to take it out to get some air soon. Alcyone was waiting for Tess to come by her room and she had been sitting on her bed with the pumpkin on her lap. Even though it didn't respond to her or talk, Alcie had grown rather fond of taking care of it. Though, she could see how taking care of babies was a pain. She and Tess had to take it everywhere and had to set up play dates and a variety of other things. There were just so many things that you should do with a child to make sure it got the right upbringing.

Alcyone leaned against the wall next to her bed and held the pumpkin in her lap petting it softly. They had tied a bow around its stem so that they could distinguish it from the rest of the pumpkins. It was a nice touch. But they still hadn't decided on a name for their scareling yet and they were probably going to talk about it today.

Maritess had arrived at the water demon's room, a make-shift pumpkin sling draped over one arm, a "Scareling Names" book in her other hand. The book in question had several pages dog-eared and sticky note strips peeking out in others. Working with Alcie on the project was going smoother than Tess ever anticipated it would go. Minus the demanding "needs" of the pumpkin of course, which when compared to an actual Scareling (large families can be so trying) wasn't as difficult. She'd been lucky with partners and it made Tess even more determined to get a great grade, which she didn't doubt they'd get. With a smile on her face, she knocked at Alcyone's door. What? Simply barging in was rude and not something proper manananggals did.

Alcyone had started to day dream while she was waiting for Tess to arrive so that they could spend some quality time with their pumpkinling. She was horrible at naming things and it had taken her so long to name her minipet companions so she hoped that Tess would have some ideas. Closing her eyes momentarily, they snapped open when she heard a soft knock on her door. A smile appeared on her face as the water demon jumped up, pumpkin in hand, and went to open the door. "Hello Tess!" She greeted her partner enthusiastically knowing that the more time they spent on this project, the better grade they would get. It was also nice that Alcie had met someone new and maybe they would continue to be friends outside of this project and class.

"Come on in." Alcie placed their pumpkin on her bed and motioned to her room. "Feel free to make yourself at home." There were a vast amount of large fish tanks in Alcie's room and the blue theme was apparent from the first glance. Settling down cross legged on her bed, the water demon pat the pumpkin gently. "So, I've been referring to our 'baby' as 'it' because it doesn't have a name yet and I feel pretty silly. We should pick a cute little neutral name." Chuckling softly, Alcie had been feeling weird since she had been taking it to class and she found herself talking to it once in awhile. It would be nice for it to have a name so that it would feel more like an actually scareling in her hands.

The first word that popped into Tess' mind when she entered Alcyone's room was Blue. Very, very blue. Which was a rather nice contrast to the usual red, white, and black motif of Tess' room, the winged vampire decided. "Did you decorate your room yourself, Alcie?" she asked, lingering a little bit at the fish tanks while warily keeping an eye out for any minipets that might take a fancy to her trailing hair or wings. She hadn't been to the other student dorms before, she had almost gotten into Israfel's but lessons got in the way and well, Tess was still a little nervous about making a complete idiot of herself.

When the water demon suggested they give their little scareling a neutral name, Tess looked a little uncertain. The names she'd picked were gender-specific but it was a big book, there ought to be at least a few dozen neutral names in there. "I suppose we could do that," she nodded, before adjusting the ribbon tied to the pumpkin's stem.

Hovering by the bed, Tess laid the book down and opened the pages so she and Alcie could pick at names. "I was going to suggest we give our pumpkin a first and a second name to reflect both of ours," she began, "I don't mind getting second billing," she chuckled. She flipped the pages and pointed to a row, "But Amari sounds like we combined our names, which I think is rather cute?" She turned to Alcie for her thoughts.

"My mother kind of helped me with the decor but yeah I guess I picked most of it." There were various types of fish swimming around in the tanks and there were a few water minipets floating about. They were all pretty well trained and hadn't attacked anybody... yet.

For some reason, Alcie was rather happy that they were forced to pair up for this assignment because she had been having trouble meeting other students lately. So she kind of saw this as excuse to get to know someone and Tess had been very kind to her as it was.

"Any name is really fine. It was just a suggestion and it might already seem like our scareling is female." Alcie motioned at the ribbon and smiled. "So maybe a female name would work?" Listening to Tess, Alcie said the name to herself and nodded. "I think that name is very appropriate and very pretty. We will call her Amari then?" That name rolled right off the tongue and it sounded very pleasant to her.

"That's nice of your mother," she nodded, once again looking at the room, absently wondering what her own mother would say about Tess' choice in decor.

"We could always say it's a bowtie," Maritess giggled as she redid the ribbon to make it look like the aforementioned accessory. "Personally, I'd want a ghoul to be my first scareling then a boil if my husband wanted a second one," she chattered casually as she refashioned the bowtie back into a ribbon. "So Amari it is, then!" she beamed at Alcyone.

"You know, for the unlife of me, I can't understand why my parents say I should be wary of demons. The ones I've met at school have been nothing but nice, with a few exceptions but that could just be my parents' talking." She sheepishly twirled a strand of hair around her finger.

Nodding, Alcyone's mother had been a significant part of her young life and that could be a reason why Alcie had rebelled so much when she was at home. "That's true." The little ribbon/bowtie was a cute touch and even though this was just an assignment, Alcie was growing rather fond of the little thing.

Raising a brow at her next comment, Alcyone had to pick her words carefully and she wanted to warn Tess that not all demons were friendly towards the undead. Though, she wasn't going to reveal everything about her race. Demons were a traditional bunch and held many prejudices. Alcie didn't quite follow this trend but she knew plenty of demon students at this school who did. "The students here have been very nice but there are some demons who aren't so." Shrugging slightly, Alcie knew that was true of all races so she wasn't really giving anything away.

Smiling, Alcie tried to change the subject because she didn't like avoiding the truth when it came to demon talk. "I've talked to some of the other parents about how they're doing with their pumpkin. The assignment has been difficult for some but it seems like we're doing alright. What else do you think we should do with our baby?"

Tess tilted her head in thought, unaware of Alcie's caution of saying too much about demons. "I guess it is possible that most of the students, not just the demons, are on their best behavior because they heard what the Head Mistress made us do for detention. Or detention in general," she shuddered, still unable to forget that horrible bathroom punishment. That and it was where she started to think she disliked gnomes a great deal.

When the water demon mentioned some of the other parents were having a hard time, the only reason Tess could think of was a conflict of schedule. "It would be hard if both parents had the same classes and the same club activities. There wouldn't be time to watch over the pumpkin and get rest. Though taking care of a pumpkin is loads easier than an actual scareling. They get into everything and they try to eat everyone. You included and you can't really get mad at them because they don't know any better," Tess shook her head and tried to keep herself from getting worked up at the memory of her younger cousins. Having an extended family was sometimes a real pain in the behi- (oh wait) -neck.

Alcyone nodded and couldn't help but cringe slightly at the name. "Yeah. I know a few students who have already gotten sent to the Princess corner and they said it was horrible." The headmistress was definitely an interesting one and that was one person that she didn't want to get on her bad side.

"Yeah. Imagine if we had an actual... living, screaming scareling? I wouldn't even know what to do. Taking care of a pumpkin has been relatively easy so I'm not complaining." Alcie had wondered if their pumpkin was actually going to hatch or not and she really wouldn't put it past Nurse Cricket. Actually, all of the teachers at this school would do something like that to their students. Pausing, Alcie glanced over at the pumpkin and then looked away before doing a double take. She ran her hands over the top of the pumpkin right next to the stem and scrutinized it. "Is that... a crack? Oh my jack..." Candlesticks! Alcie cursed to herself trying to think if she had dropped the pumpkin. No she hadn't! Why was there a crack? Was this going to be taken off their grades?

Sitting on the bed, Alcie was so distraught by the fact that this was probably her fault! "I'm so sorry. I really don't recall that happening and I don't know what to do." Frowning, Alcie stared at the pumpkin trying to think of ways to fix this.

Tess was about to concur on how terrible the Princess corner was when Alcie mentioned their pumpkin had a crack. Wait, what, a crack!?! Her eyes moved from the pumpkin, to the water demon, back to the pumpkin. When she had tied the ribbon into the bow, the crack hadn't been there.

"N-no, it's not your fault, I'm sure I didn't see anything when I fixed Amari's ribbon. B-but what could this mean?" Tess didn't think the pumpkinling, beyond being fussy, would actually do anything more than that. "Have the other parents said anything about their pumpkins changing or-"

At that moment, the crack seemed to get bigger. What?! "Eeep!"

Furrowing her brow, Alcie had no idea what was going on! She hadn't heard of any parents having this happen yet though it was getting closer to the due date for their homework assignments. Scrutinizing the pumpkin's surface carefully, Alcie then came to the realization. "What if it's... hatching?" She stared wide-eyed at Tess and then back at the pumpkin.

Nobody said that the pumpkin was actually going to hatch into something. Was this going to happen to everybody? Alcie watched in horror as the crack grew wider and wider and soon they were able to see inside of the pumpkin. She was actually a little scared to see what was inside because who knew what it was. "Okay so there's an actual scareling... in there. In our care." Dear Jack.

When the lid of the pumpkin stirred and a pair of eyes peeked out, the first thing Tess did gawk. The second thing she did was remember to keep her wings beating before she ended up getting floored. Literally.

"I spoke too soon," she whispered, "Oh Jack, this is going to be harder than we thought..." she cringed. She only hoped that whatever it was inside would be something they could control. "What do you suppose she eats?"

Hopefully nothing undead.

Alcyone had no idea what to do. "This assignment... is going to be a lot more difficult than I was expecting..." Staring at the thing as it peeked out of its pumpkin shell, Alcyone was speechless. "I have... no idea. What do scarelings eat?" It didn't help that she didn't have any younger siblings that she could have watched grow up. She was sure that her brother would know what to do in a situation like this....

Looking up, Alcie's eyes noticed the time and realized that she was late for a class. "Candlesticks! I'm late for a class! I'm sorry to leave this on you Tess considering what just happened but do you think you could watch her for a little bit? I'm going to go to class and go straight to your dorm to figure out what the hell we're going to do next." She wondered what the other students reactions were to their pumpkins hatching. Though, that sight probably would have been pretty humorous if she hadn't just been caught off guard with the assignment.

Getting up and grabbing her bag, Alcie waved to Tess. "You can stay here if you want but lock the door if you leave! I'll come back and go straight to your dorm if you're not here." Rushing out of her room, Alcie's mind was racing with thoughts as she tried to remember how to take care of an actual scareling.
