User ImageAesir was in the process of planning a viking. It was no longer a secret, which didn't surprise him, but it did mean that there were a lot more Reavers hanging around him, trying to prove themselves worthy companions for his first viking in one way or another. When he was a Captain he would have been lucky to receive so much attention when he decided to go raiding, even though he was very good at it. Since he wasn't likely to be much better at raiding now than he'd been before spending time as a Thrall, Aesir had to mark it down to his new title.

In truth, it had been flattering at first, but Aesir was beginning to get tired of it, and almost wished he could simply retreat to his den and have Morrigan scare them off. But that would be incredibly cowardly, and it wasn't that Aesir was afraid of his Reavers - that was an idea worthy of ridicule - he simply didn't like having them hanging around and constantly vying for his attention. It was distracting, and he actually did have real, important things to do. Like be a Warlord.

So the fact that he was heading toward one of the spaces cleared for the Stormborn to practice sparring was probably best ignored. He wasn't feeling like being responsible for the time being. He just wanted to work out some frustration on someone who would fight back. Ideally someone who wasn't a Reaver interested in coming viking with him.

Ataji was less than best pleased. Aesir was planning a Viking, which meant he was surrounded, nay, almost mobbed by Reavers. Which was all well and good, had be been a captain. But he was their Warlord. He was the most important person in the pride, and therefore had important jobs to be doing - so being mobbed by Reavers was not in his best interests.

But, Ataji reminded himself, that was none of his business. If the Warlord wanted peace, I'm sure he could get it himself. His duty, his only duty, was to serve and protect his family. The Vikings. And he could only do that if he trained. So when Aesir was spotted heading to the sparring area, Ataji almost grinned. Almost.

Bounding forward, but trying to appear sedate, he 'conveniently' arrived at the spot just before Aesir.

If Aesir noticed that there was a hint of a bound in Ataji's gait as he arrived at the sparring grounds, he didn't say anything. In truth, he was relieved to see the fierce Captain there. Ataji had a well-deserved reputation for being quite brutal in battle. Aesir remembered still the day when he had challenged into the pride. His victory had been spectacular. Aesir had been on guard duty that day, but had not been the one to answer that challenge, and probably no one remembered he had been there at all. Had he been the one fighting, however, he would definitely have more scars than he now did.

"One day I will kill you," Aesir said, greeting Ataji.

He hoped his marked attention to one specific Stormborn would convince the hangers-on that their further presence was unnecessary. It seemed to be effective, to the extent that they backed off to the edges of the sparring ground. That was an improvement in and of itself, though it still wasn't quite what the Warlord might have hoped for. It also meant that his match with Ataji was going to have quite the audience, and if he didn't fight well, it would be witnessed by many.

With a mental shrug he dismissed the concern. Ataji would be a more than worthy opponent, and win or lose their match should be just what Aesir needed to clear his thoughts. It would definitely be an enjoyable match, and they should put on a good show for their audience. That thought brought a grin to the Warlord's mouth.

"Are you in need of a sparring partner?"

Indeed, Ataji had no recollection of Aesir being there - mind you, at the time, the phrase 'bloodlust' or 'red rage' may have been a astute statement to describe his state of mind at that point.

"Not today, my lord." Ataji still hung onto some relics of his past pride, and one of those was an uncanny politeness to those he percieved to be on an upper level to him.

"Alas, today I have no enemies." A grin flickered round his muzzle as he spoke.
"A spar would be most welcome."

"What a shame," Aesir observed. No enemies. His grin became more pronounced, with just the sharp tips of his teeth revealed beneath his curled lip.

Aesir's claws flexed in and out of their sheathes as he lowered his center of gravity and moved to present a smaller target to his new-found opponent. Being a naturally large lion, he still presented quite the target, but the soft and vulnerable areas' accessibility was more limited by his crouched angle.

He didn't think Ataji would be the first to strike, but he thought he would give the Captain the opportunity to do so. When fighting Stormborn it was usually not a good idea to give one of them the offensive advantage, since they were trained more for offensive fighting than defensive, but Aesir was confident in his own abilities.

If Ataji didn't take the advantage the Warlord was giving him, Aesir fully intended to press it. He wasn't the sort to ignore his audience, since it was a bad habit to get into, ignoring one's surroundings in battle, but he was determined not to let their regard unsettle him. He'd fought before watchers before.

Ataji was mostly still, only his tail thrashing wildly as Aesir moved. But as he moved downwards into a crouch, the pelted lion rocketed from his stationary posistion into a tackle, claws aiming for a strike at the other lions shoulder. It wasn't a terribly powerful strike, more testing the waters to see how Aesir would react.

Most stormborn were built for offensive fighting. The most recent reaver Ataji had fought wouldn't even dodge, they considered it cowardly. Whilst noble, Ataji was willing to dodge if it meant he would win.

But Ataji most of all had to be careful. Blood-lust and extreme rage were all well and good when he was fighting enemies, but when he was fighting another stormborn, he had to keep his emotions under control.

Aesir wasn't one of those who were too proud to dodge an attack. That was idiocy, sheer and simple, and for Aesir there was no excuse for that sort of thing in battle. He was too experienced at violence - mostly at perpetuating it, but sometimes being on the receiving end, as with sparring - to let his own pride cause him to make stupid and ultimately painful mistakes.

He twisted to one side, mostly avoiding Ataji's strike, but still coming away with the sensation of claws dragging across his flank. Mentally he chastised himself for thinking first and reacting later, and vocally he grunted. In addition to not being one of those lions who refused to dodge attacks, Aesir was also not one of those lions who bothered to waste energy pretending something didn't hurt when it did.

Aesir didn' dwell on it, though, and instead made his twisting motion into a counter attack wherein he tried to knock Ataji to the ground by striking his side. Since Ataji hadn't pulled his claws, Aesir wouldn't either. The Warlord preferred it that way, in all honesty. It made the play of sparring more real.

Idiocy it may have been, but Ataji remembered a time in his youth he had refused to do that also, in that youthful arrogrance and pride that told you that you were invincible, and old codgers could do nothing. That belief had quickly been knocked out of him. Very quickly.

But at the moment, his thoughts were not on the past - he was not liable to wandering minds during a fight. No, his mind was on winning. And control. As Aesir twisted, Ataji tried to follow suit, but wasn't quite fast enough, still having momentum from his previous charge. Aesir's claws raked across him, and Ataji growled harshly from the pain, landing solidly. Shaking himself off, he circled slowly, waiting for a chance.

He attacked again, but with less caution this time, going for a low attack on Aesir's legs, trying to knock him over.

Aesir's body was conditioned to battle and it was a good thing, too. His body was able to anticipate the attack which was coming after he and Ataji separated and he found himself moving to dodge Ataji's spring. The low attack succeeded in putting him off balance and he staggered backward, barely managing to keep his footing.

Being unbalanced, he could do little more at first than twist again and fling himself back the other direction to keep himself from falling onto his side or his bum. He had ceased to be aware of his audience, really, except in a very peripheral way. That is, he knew they were there, but as long as they said and did nothing to interfere, he would continue to relegate them to the category of being not worth devoting attention to.

Retaliation was a bit slower in coming than he would have liked. He turned and bit at Ataji, not really expecting to get more than a mouthful of mane out of the attempt, but making it on the off chance that Ataji would make a mistake which would allow his teeth to catch on something more substantial. Not that he was interested in actually tearing out his opponent's throat or blinding him or anything like that, but this wasn't one of those "nice" matches where no one got hurt. Both of them knew that.
