User Image There hadn't been many times in his young life where Shiloh had found himself alone. In fact, most instances of such occurances had not been pleasant; for, one way or another he had been in some sort of distress. First was the loss of his parents and small family herd during a two-legged roundup, and then the time he had escaped those creature's grasp with the help of strangers only to wander the woods. After that? He'd pretty much stuck to Scar's side like a thorn, all the way up into his yearling form he now possessed. He prefered to be by her side, not for some misguided ideal that she'd be a stand-in mother to him, but for the sheer fact with her around... no one messed with him. She made him feel safe, secure, as if nothing would ever go wrong for him. All the safety of a herd in that one grusomely scarred mare.

What was different now? Well the buckskin yearling was growing into adulthood, and with it some unsettling feelings had begun to stir. They confused and muddled him, and he wasn't sure they were entirely oppropriate to have. So, to save him an embarrasing conversation with Scar, the young colt had set off on his own for a little bit to try and clear his mind. It wasn't exactly the best option, but he wasn't about to talk his feelings out with her. That mare... just had something about her. It wasn't so apparent on the surface of her personality, but he knew her to be fierce in the face of danger and now that she had regained most of her mobility from the healing scars, he wasn't so certain she'd react in a friendly manner to any sort of advance or confession.

With these sorts of thoughts on his mind, the young stallion traveled across what seemed like a barren meadow, his head bobbing rhythmically with each step he took. It wasn't a stretch to say he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings.

Niagara stared down into the dark hole that was before her. She had just seen something small and fuzzy head into that hole... She would just stop in and ask if they wanted to come out and play... ask them if they thought a race might be fun. Well.... if it was a bunny the the answer was definitely yes. They would race and have a grand old time.

Niagara was half pure blooded french saddle horse. That meant...well, she didn't know what that meant... but it should stand for something... she should have the right to demand lesser animals... such as rabbits and birds... to play with her... That would be her right. She was after all... almost pure blooded.

Niagara pawed lightly at the hole. Her heavy hooves knocked some of the dirt into the entrance. The hole was too small for her... she wasn't stupid... almost out of her head insane... but not stupid. She pawed at the hole more roughly. She just needed it to be bigger. She dug until her hooves were filled with mud and she was pretty sure she could get at least her head into the hole to see if that furry creature wanted to play. She ducked her head down and firmly tucked it into the small burro. "Hello?"...no answer... She tried again. "Hello! Anyone here?" She huffed. Well maybe they went out the back door. She sighed and tugged her head free. She shook off a bit of the dirt and walked to the near-by stream. She took a drink. Looking up she saw a buckskin stallion heading straight toward her new friends...slightly bigger... home.

"Hey! Watch out!"

Should he tell her about these new feelings? He didn't exactly know what they meant himself, but the yearling was fairly certain that if he opened his mouth about the subject she'd probably chase him off. Or worse, beat some sense into his brain. Oh he knew it was absolutely absurd to feel anything but respect toward the mare that taken him in as a foal to 'raise' and 'guide', so why was he feeling like this? It was aggravating to say the least, and it almost made him want to believe that frightening creature called 'Scar' would react in any way reasonable about it. Why didn't he just march back there and-

"HUH?" he blurted with as much grace as a fat hog in a mud puddble. He snapped to attention as a voice called out from seemingly nowhere, and as he stumbled forward out of surprise, he was shocked to find that his hoof did not connect with the ground when it should. Luckily for him, Shiloh's body reacted quicker than his mind... and burst into panic mode. Upon feeling that slight falling sensation the yearling balked and jerked into an awkward spring to the side, his forelegs seizing up as if he had just went splashing into some particularly cold winter river. With as much dignity as he could muster the colt stopped himself from bolting and glanced first toward the hole he had almost stepped into, and then toward the voice who had called out to him. He was incredibly dumbfounded to find himself in the presence of the larger mare and could feel a wave of embarrasment wash over him.

Great! Now he looked like a skittish foal afraid of its own shadow! That's exactly the image he was hoping to avoid, and begrudgingly flattened his ears against the side of his skull, that embarrasment flaring up into anger. "Who put that there?" the buckskin demanded in his stupor. A dumb question he realized, but nevertheless endeavored not to care. He could no longer hold eye contact with the mare, and so stamped his forehoof into the ground instead. Boy, did he sound like a mule right now.

Niagara shook her mane slightly and snorted. There was a smaller horse... stamping his feet around making enough racket to wake the poor bunny...because bunnies always ran into their burros and passed out into peaceful sleep. She mentally argued with herself. There was the possibility... although it was very minor... that the rabbit was sleeping... she after all wasn't very quiet herself.

The mare glanced at the hole then the youngster and trotted over. She nodded her head. His anger fed her own. "I did!" She waited. She would love to see what he was gonna do about it... "This is where my friend the...uh...fuzzy thing lives." She nodded. "He...She.... Well, i was invited over and because i couldn't fit through the front door i decided to do some re modeling. " She nodded. "I think it looks much better." She looked over her handy work once more and then glanced back to the male.

As if forgetting that he had snapped at her and she back at him... she smiled. "Hi! Im Niagara! Its nice to meet you..."

He had certainly expected some sort of retaliation to his dumb question, but he certainly didn't expect an answer like that. Startled into thinking he had heard her wrong, the buckskin shot his gaze back to her's and shuttered as she smiled at him. "You actually- wait a minute," he edged away from her as he had noticed she had gotten much closer than he would have liked. Something was a bit odd with her, out of place, he just couldn't understand what or even if he had heard her right. "There's no way a fuzzy thing would have invited you into it's hole-in-the-ground", he said with a relieved sigh, quite sure he had indeed heard wrong. After all, that would have been a crazy thing to say! "Pardon the outburst", he laughed as he calmed himself down, "But I could have sworn you'd said something completely off. Guess I need to start paying more attention."

He certainly did. Imagine, acting like a gosh darned fool- twice now! She must think he was crazy by now. Clearing his throat the yearling bobbed his head at her politely before squaring his shoulder in a less threatened looking posture. "Nice to meet you too, I'm Shiloh." Perhaps he should do something to help save face? So, in order to appear less like the frightened coward he had showed himself to be earlier, he gestured toward the burrow and said, "Can you believe I almost stepped in that thing? That would have been painful."

Niagara flicked her ears and smiled,as well as a horse could. "No, no... you are very right...most fuzzy things like to stay to themselves... but this one is my friend." However she did find it very rude that the fuzzy thing hadn't realized she didn't fit. She huffed, more to her mind then anything he said.

She blinked at him. "I think you should if you miss heard me...It would only make sense!" She nodded. "So what did you think i said?" She didn't wait for his answer... it obviously had nothing to do with the conversation about her friend the fuzzy thing and since thats all that mattered what he thought didn't.

She nodded as he gave his name. However she snorted lightly. "I bet..." She had heard of horses breaking legs in holes like hers. She blinked at him. "So Shiloh... What brings you all the way out here to the home of my fuzzy friend?"

So... he hadn't misheeard her. And the fact that she seemed so unbothered by these statements made Shiloh feel even more ill at ease than he had been initially. Clearly there was something wrong here, and it certainly wasn't him. Flicking his ears nervously from side to side, the buckskin yearling tensed as he stepped away on nervous hooves. It was obvious he was uncomfortable. "I, uh, well-" what exactly could he say to this mare? She thought she could talk to animals, and worst yet that it had invited her into a hole! Those kinds of thoughts weren't normal! "I was just out for a run, to clear my head," he admited off-handedly as he swung his head around to glance at his surroundings. There were no quick exits he could take. The valley was mostly open, and the front was cut off by the larger mare. He could turn and make a run for it... if he really wanted to.

That is, if she didn't come chasing after him. "So... so what are you doing out here?" he returned the question, trying to buy more time before he decided the best course of action to escape her company. Maybe he should feel guilty about wanting to leave her so soon? Scar might think him a coward, and that's certainly not something he would have liked. With a twinge of unease the colt settled himself down by taking a few quick breaths. What's the worst she could do?

She stared at him as if HE was the crazy one. She had already told him that she was here to visit her friend. The answer was in his question. Niagara followed his lead and looked around. She twisted her ears. She could tell he didn't believe her about her fuzzy friend.

She kicked a piece of clotted up dirt. She knew... If she just showed him that her fuzzy friend lived here then he would have to believe her. She shifted. But how was she to prove about the bunny. She stopped. Perish the thought... It was unimportant. She flicked her tail.

"Clearing your head? So... something is on your mind?" She wasn't intentionally prying but she was very interested. Especially if it turned his mind from her being... eccentric.

He had waited for a bit and at least she wasn't saying anything else crazy about the fuzzy thing in the hole, whichmade it easier for him to stick to his decision. He honestly didn't want Sca to think him a coward, in fact that was probably the last thing he wanted, so the fact he could stay here showedhe had some... potential? Ugh, he didn't know! How on earth was he going to take care of this problem! Its not like, well, not like Scar would ever fall for a coward- wait a minute. He didn't even know if he wanted that! His thoughts were thoroughly interrupted by the mare once moreand it shocked him back into reality. Oh. Yeah. Crazy was still here...

Yeah", he hesiantly admited to, cocking a hind hoof and turning his face away from her as if pouting or perhaps just being stubborn. "I, well... you're a mare!" he stated suddenly, as if shocked to realize such a thing. In a rush he snapped his gaze back to her. Yes! That was it! He could ask her for advice, never mind the crazy, she was a mare and she could help him! "How- how do you tell someone you have feelings for them? A mare that is, how do you tell a mare you like them?" Oh my, what did he just get himself into?

And there was that second head again... She watched him carefully trying desperately to piece what he said into some semblance of meaning. What the hell had he just said... Was he telling her he liked her. She glanced at the hole in which her fuzzy friend was currently still hiding. "Look...uh... Shiloh was it?...I um... I don't uh..." She looked away and flicked her tail.

However she frowned then. How do you tell a mare you like them? Maybe it wasn't her... it was more likely a childhood sweetheart... he didn't seem that old."You dont..." She shook her head. "You show them." Nodding carefully she flicked her tail.

"O-oh..." his ears drooped slightly as he glanced over his shoulder. Scar was still healing so it wasn't likely she'd chase him off or attack him, but then again, she had managed to get into a few awkward scuffles and he was keen on getting his nose bitten into. "I don't think she'd appreciate that", he sighed, whatever fire he had showed was snuffed out in aninstant. Well, darn, that certainly wouldn't help the situation. With a flick of his dark tail Shiloh backed off a bit, nodding his head to the taller mare. "Thanks anyway, but I think I'd rather keep my hide." And it was decided, these feelings he'd had, whatever they were, were snuffed out at the thought of actually telling, or showing, Scar how he felt. She'd chase him off for sure, and he rather liked being around her, she made him feel safe and secure.
