Under the stern, impassive glare of Nurse Cricket, the class was dispersing. Whether they were subdued was largely a matter of interpretation, but one thing was certain: nobody wanted to fail this one. The unspecified and screechy consequences of failure were uncomfortably ambiguous.
Siddie followed Tybalt out; once in the hallway, she fell in beside him and poked at the pumpkin he'd collected from Cricket. "What do you suppose is going to come out of it?" she asked. "Oh my badness ... what if ... " she trailed off as a heretofore unconsidered concept occurred to her. She shot a worried, nervous glance sideways at the ghost she'd been partnered with. "Do you - do you know where gnomes come from?" she whispered.

Tybalt grumbled as he booted the door open. His hands having already been filled with the little bundle of baby pumpkins, left him no other choice but to do so. Luckily he was able to stuff his school supplies in his bag. Mind you, with a little fight from Repsi and even Frendo, but that was to be expected. What was a little unexpected, to the black dog at least, was that there was someone tagging along. A girl at that. His partner he assumed? Must be the 'mother' of the pumpkin. She already knew his name though, despite not knowing hers. What exactly did he sleep through anyways?
"Ehhh? Out of pumpkins?" Was all the he could manage. He had no idea what came out of pumpkins. Did they have anything aside from seeds? They were talking about babies in the classroom, but he was still having a hard time believing that load of bull. "Err... Umm... I don't think there is anything... Unless--is it sick? Does it have some sort of parasite?" He asked; eyes suddenly wide with shock as he lifted the orange gourd and observed it. Seemed fine, but one couldn't be sure. Well, no matter. If there was something inside the pumpkin, he'd defeat it in order to protect his and this girls newly obtained baby pumpkin. It was the right thing to do! All fathers must protect their pups, yes?
He was about to continue his stride down the hallway, when her second question came up. "Geh! Gnomes? How should I know?" He asked; confused by her already strange and getting stranger questions. "They probably spawned from the filth in the other bathroom." He finished with a huff and swished his tail. He didn't like gnomes, not one bit. They were nothing but stupid creatures. Stupid stupid creatures.

"Parasite? Oh, I hope not." Siddie peered worriedly at the pumpkin. "It's too small for an actual baby, though ... " Maybe they were just supposed to keep the little pumpkin safe, though that seemed rather too easy for assigned homework. It was an encouraging thought, however, and it let her relax just a little.
"Oh. Um, well. I'll stay away from that bathroom, then," she said, faintly relieved. "I just thought - well, gnomes are small - maybe they came from small pumpkins ... Oh, that sounds so stupid now." She laughed nervously and ducked her head. "Forget it, it was dumb."

"Who knows?" He replied; tucking the pumpkin under one arm and scratching the back of his head with the other. To be honest, he was kind of hoping she would have more ideas. Seeing as he had no clue at all. This was going to be more difficult than he thought... What to do? What to do?
"Hmm? Gnomes from pumpkins? I sure hope not!" He had a whole pile of them in his room. If they came from pumpkins, he was going to be turfing all of his precious pumpkins tonight! Though he really didn't want to. Hopefully she was wrong and it really was a silly thought. Oh Jack... But now he couldn't get it out of his head. The 'what if it was true?' thought. Ah maaan.
Clearing his throat, he turned to face the other girl. "T-that aside... I'm really stumped on what to do exactly. I don't know how to take care of anything aside from fellow dogs." Hell, his parents had never even explained about pups before, so babies--err, pumpkin babies were far beyond his knowledge. "Do you know anything, or know anyone who might know?" He asked, unsure if he should get his hopes up or not.

Siddie chewed on her lower lip. "Slime sounds more likely, really," she offered. "Considering. So we shouldn't worry. Or, well, try not to, anyway."
"Um, well." She stared at the pumpkin. She'd had some information about taking care of babies, mostly by cultural osmosis, but what one did with the pumpkin beforehand was a mystery. "I know you have to keep eggs warm," she said thoughtfully. "And I guess it couldn't hurt, right? And we should probably carry it around. If something does come out of it, and neither of us is there, that would be a disaster." She looked up to see what Tybalt thought of that. He didn't seem to have any more idea what this assignment was about than she did, and they were supposed to be working together on it.
"Should we give it a name?" she asked.

"Ew..." The more they guessed, the more disgusted he was with gnomes. "Eh... Yeah. I think I'm in agreement with you." He replied; patting the pumpkin with his free hand. How could something so horrid come from something so perfect and innocent?
"Whoa, wait. What?" He gave her a funny look, when she offered some of her ideas. "But it's not an egg..." Then again, he did ask her opinion.
"Err... Never mind. I guess it couldn't hurt to try." Problem was, how exactly do you keep a pumpkin warm? Sit on it? Man, that was a weird thought. As for carrying it around? That was something he was in complete agreement with. The last thing they needed, was to waste a day or more, hunting for some creature. A creature that could be dangerous for all they know. "I agree. We'd probably get detention if we let this thing run rampant, and I don't want to go to the princess corner like that zombie kid in gym class." He shuddered at the thought.
"Err, sure... We could name it. But what do you name a pumpkin?" He asked.

"Oh man, the princess corner ... " Siddie shivered a little. All those sparkles. It was a horrifying thought. She'd heard that glitter never came off. "Avoiding detention. Definitely. Er. Do you want to hang on to it first, or should I?" She was pretty sure her schinks wouldn't try to nibble on it. It didn't seem their kind of thing.
"Um." She caught the end of one of her ponytails between her fingers and twirled it, trying to think of some appropriate name. They didn't know if it was a boil or a ghoul, so it'd have to be some kind of neutral name ... and they didn't even know what it was, other than a pumpkin ... if it even was ... "How about Vine?" she suggested. "Is that good?"

"Are you serious?" He asked. Even though he half expected it. It just meant that he had to make darn sure to never get sent to the princess corner. Unfortunately, that was easier said than done. It was likely that all the students, regardless of how well behaved they were, would be sent to the princess of corner at some point or other. It was just a matter of when... And to top it off, he was no well behaved student! For all he knew, his turn could be drawing near. Ugh. The mere thought brought shudders.
"Err.. I guess I can. I have a lot of pumpkins in my dorm. Maybe it will feel more comfortable with it's own kind..?" Gosh that sounded ridiculous! It's own kind? Comfortable? "A-anyways--I don't think my canine friends will bother it. I stopped Geminus from chewing on pumpkins a long time ago. The rest don't seem bothered." Or at least he hoped. If they detected something inside of this pumpkin, they may show interest after all and very well may tear it apart. "......" He was going to have to put it somewhere out of reach--just to be safe!
"Vine?" He asked. "Sounds kind of plain... Maybe something more Halloween-ish?" He had no idea, this whole conversation was really awkward. "Uhh.. Maybe we should just wait until it hatches--or whatever you call it when it's born." He finished; scratching the back of his head again. This time out of frustration.

They were, at least, united in a desire to avoid detention. Not that that was an uncommon goal, but the way some people behaved ... well, Siddie would consider that later; for now, she was discussing homework with Tybalt. She flicked a quick glance at him out of the corner of her eye. Cute, yeah, but he also seemed pretty smart.
"Canine friends?" she asked, attention diverted with mild interest. "Do you have pets too? I have three schinks. I don't think they'll bother it when it's my turn." She paused. That didn't sound very encouraging. "I'll make sure they don't," she assured Tybalt.
She ducked her head a little. "I'm not very good at names," she admitted. "You're right. We should wait till we know what it is."

He perked at her next words. "Yeah! I have several! Though most aren't with me right now. Seeing as I'm not allowed to have them all in my dorm. Geminus is my Orthalis. He's a bit dense and always bickering between the two heads, but I like him." He loved talking about his dog minipets. They were, in a way, his best friends. They were also sort of like his own pack. "Ahh, but Umbra is my baby. She's so lovely." He continued; giving a happy sigh. He was still extremely happy to have managed to get himself the blue Cu Sith. She was his favoured pet and went with him everywhere.
"What are your schink's like?" He asked curiously. "I've seen them before, but I don't have any. I mostly try and stick with dogs, seeing as I can understand them best." He admitted; scratching his cheek lightly. "Oh and don't worry about it." He waved his hand slightly as though encouraging her to dismiss her worries. "If they do bother it, we can probably work out something between the two of us to protect it. We can probably put together a make-shift barrier to keep them from it if we have to."
From what he could tell so far, this girl was nice to hang around with. Which was more than he could say for some of the other students he could have been paired with. Hell. He could have been paired with a demon! Ugh. The thought of made him shudder. Their kind were so annoying. Always stuck up. Which was something he couldn't happening with this girl.
"Heh!" He couldn't help but smile when she admitted to being lousy at names. Why? Because he wasn't all that good with them either. "No worries I'm not that good either. I just pick words that suit them. I'm sure we can think up something that will suit it in time." He said; his usual crooked smile spreading.
"By the way... You already seem to know my name. But I guess there's no harm in introducing myself anyways. I'm Tybalt. You are?" He asked.

Siddie giggled a little. She'd hit on a good topic, apparently; he seemed much more at ease talking about his pets. "My schinks aren't the brightest creatures, but they're little loves," she offered. "Xi always wants to be on my lap whenever I sit down." The blue-and-black schink had some kind of lap radar, she was positive. It rarely took him more than two seconds to be right there when she sat.
She nodded when he mentioned understanding dogs; he seemed quite doggish himself, so that was probably natural. He seemed nice, too. Siddie silently thanked the Dark that she'd gotten paired with someone reasonable for this assignment. She hoped she didn't seem too anxious. Or too fluttery. Or too bossy, or whatever else.
"We'll figure something out," she said, nodding. "Oh - right! I saw your name on the pair assignment list. I'm Siddie," she introduced herself, giving him a bright smile.

"They sound really attached to you." He smiled at the mental image of the schink's, following her about like puppies. Though cringed at the thought of his own doing the same to him. If any of his larger pets tried to sit on his lap, he'd probably be squished. Thankfully Umbra was the regal type and probably never be that clingy and Geminus couldn't be bothered. The hazmutt's and his spectral dog were a little more clingy, but they were also smaller. Therefore, not much of a problem.
"Ahh I was wondering if I missed something..." He answered sheepishly when she mentioned the list. Looks like sleeping during class really did cause some problems this time. Hopefully he didn't miss out on any other information he needed to know. "Well anyways, it's nice meeting you." He returned the smile, though far more toothy than he intended.
"Now... Back to the original problem. What do we do with this?" He held up the pumpkin once more. As though finally remembering that he had it with him.

"They are. I do my best to take good care of them." Siddie was equally attached to her pets; she tended to bring them treats and spoil them completely. "Um, if you want to meet them sometime, that'd be kind of neat," she offered cautiously.
"Did you sleep all the way through class? She peeked out of the corner of her eye at Tybalt. "I woke up partway through," she confessed. "I guess it's a good thing, though, or we'd have both got in trouble."
"Um. Well, I guess we're taking it for a walk, or something ... that's good, right? I can hold onto it first, if you want," she offered. "We could, like, meet somewhere tomorrow to exchange it. Maybe walk with it again." She giggled, faintly embarrassed. "That kind of sounds dumb, but I can't think of much else."

"I'm sure you do. If you didn't, I wouldn't expect them to be so clingy." He answered. "Ah, that would be great! You can meet my pets as well, if you'd like? Though maybe just Umbra right now... I don't know if it would be a good idea to introduce Geminus to your schink's just yet. He might try and eat them." That wasn't a pleasant thought, but knowing that two headed dummy, that's probably what would happen.
"Err, not all through class... Well maybe--yeah..." He finally admitted. "I kind of woke up when they were handing these guys out." He said; pointing the pumpkin once more. She was right though. It really was a good thing that she had woken up in time to hear enough on the details of their project so that wouldn't screw up too badly. Or at least, he hoped.
"Hmm, sounds like a plan and would you mind?" He asked. "I think it would better, considering I'll probably have to make a barrier to prevent my pets from bothering it. Even after training him to stop chewing on pumpkins. I really don't trust Geminus alone with it..." He didn't suppose the excuse 'my dog ate my homework' would work on Nurse Cricket. Even if it was true...
"So... Do we meet up here again tomorrow? About noon-ish?" He asked, passing the pumpkin gently towards her.

Siddie nodded, taking the pumpkin carefully. "Sounds good to me!" she answered. "Noon-ish. Um - I'll bring Xi along, maybe." She smiled. "I guess I'd better get to my next class, but I'll see you tomorrow."
