Everyone's (ok...not everyone...) making a huge deal about the Fibonacci sequence and the Holy Gift order that Maynard used in Lateralus. So what? Yes, it was clever. Very clever. But, c'mon, I knew about the Fibonacci sequence when I was in first grade. No, it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm Indian and I was "taught about it when I was younger." I read about it in a freakin' Childcraft book! (Something about the spiral in the middle of a sunflower and other various things in nature...don't ask how I remember, I have a freakish memory.) This doesn't give anything about what any of the lyrics mean, pushing it off as "dealing as it does with "alternative" views of inner consciousness, vaguely Buddhist spirituality, and other interesting philosophical inquiries such as the mutation of DNA and the concept of a Third Eye." That puts things into perspective, I guess, but doesn't give a decent explanation.
Any thoughts on the matter? Things you'd like to share? I'm encouraging you to post, be nice.

see, for me, its not so exciting that he used it...its the mere fact that there IS music today that will get you to think a little more then most. and hell, it IS because he used it...cuz i know Id never be able to use it in the way he did...and i doubt many other people could.

Well, yes. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Maynard though. I think he's a ******** genius.
I guess I've just gotten to a point where I start to expect things from him.

It's an audio asthetic thing. Musical sequences are often called 'mathmatical progressions'. He intergrated a sequence that is buring in the minds of us all - weather taught or not, it's a logical progression we are aware of - like your sunflower. It's a compound progressive pattern, which if you listen to the lyrics, they are also compung progressive - Thus stimulating a deeper psychological responce. You can argue weather it's genius or not - either way, it's effective.

Well, Tool is generally tightlipped about the influences and meanings of their music, so I dont' know if we will ever know for sure if this is something they did on purpose or if it just happened to turn out that way.

Yes, they do like to be secrative about what they mean most of the time. It just wouldn't be as interesting if they came out and told us everything though, would it?

Prior to lateralus, Maynard was asked in an interview: what can we expect from this new album? Maynard said complex mathematics.
People thought it was maynard being tightlipped and obscure and thought no more of it, and no more was elaborated. Months later after the album came out, people started to click.

I thought it was awesome he used the Fibonacci sequence. It really makes things interesting. Tool's hidden messages are one of the things that make them so cool.

I think we can all agree that Lateralus is a very spiritual album. And it is no secret that the band are into alternate spiritualism (Danny Carey). Number sequences and patterns have a lot to do with mysticism. I am currently reading some Crowley books that look at alot of these aspects such as the Magical alphabet and the sepher sephiroth. The fibonnaci sequence is just one of the mathmatical inputs that add to this Qabalistic edge. Also see: The grudge - "Saturn ascends, the one, the ten." Doesn't seem to make sence, but it rhymes, right? There's more to it. It's qabalistic!

I love the song, and im not saying that im in awe of him using it, but i do think it is amasing ^^
When i heard the lyrics after realising he was using the Fibonacci Sequence i kinda laughed.
The part in which he says "Over thinking, over analysing seperates the body from the mind."
I found it to be kinda ironic xD

I had an out-of-body experience while listening to Lateralus under the influence of LSD.
