D o l l i e ' s Guide to Post Decoration 。◕‿◕。Hello everyone! You can call me Dollie. Post decoration is somewhat of a passion of mine, so being the ever so lovely individual (read: has a plethora of free time) that I am, I've decided to share some of my "techniques" if you will.
Unfortunately, the BBCode for guilds seems to differ slightly from what you can use on the forums (such as Barton Town). Because of that, I'm going to omit what doesn't seem to work as well in Guild posts so that you can use any part of this tutorial in any of your guild-related roleplays as well.
I'm going to break this up into sections below, indicated by my table of contents which will follow, to make this a little easier to navigate through.
I hope you'll find this helpful. Thanks for your time. Have a good day.

Pictures and Modifications 。◕‿◕。 One of the most important aspects to a pretty roleplay post (aside from your excellent writing, of course!) are the pictures that are used. Since this guild is centered around pictures of real people, I'm going to use those.
(Helpful hint: A lot of people find it annoying to see big celebrities like Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, etc. I would advise against using any well known celebrities completely. It just has a completely "overdone" sort of feeling. Or perhaps I've just become a little jaded from all of my years of roleplaying. XD)
The website that I use almost exclusively to obtain pictures for my characters is Model Mayhem. There are thousands upon thousands of models on that website, both male and female. Usually each model will have at least a couple of photos of themselves so it's easy to grab a couple of pictures to use in your post.
For this tutorial, I'm going to use this model:

Now that I have a photograph of her I'm going to use Picnik. Once I upload the photo, I usually go through the same process on the "Edit" screen: Auto-fix, resize, and crop.
 I do this so that I can first "fix" the coloring of the photo, make it small enough to fit in a post, and cut out any unnecessary things in the photo that I may not want to use. This is basically routine for me at this point and I highly suggest using these three tools. I find them incredibly helpful.
Next, I jump over to the "Create" tab. Once there, I go under "Effects". I usually do not manipulate the photo that much using the effects. Sometimes I don't manipulate at all and just leave it as is. In this case, I've chosen to use the "Cross Process" tool at 51% fade. It adds a touch of color into the picture, but not enough to make it looks to futzed with.

Once I've applied this effect, I jump over to the "Frames" tab. For this picture, I would usually use it as the biggest photo in the post (it has been resized to be smaller for the purpose of fitting it in this tutorial). I'm a huge fan of using rounded edges for my "main photograph".

Once I've applied this frame, I save the file to my computer.

Here is my finished product:

Now, I usually like to have more than one picture of my character in my posts. Some people do, some people don't. If I'm feeling like having another large photo, I'll repeat this same process. Always use the same person in your additional photos. Otherwise it looks sloppy. Sometimes I add smaller photographs, such as this:
You'll note that I have already applied the autofix, resize and crop to get it to the size I have now.

I'm going to skip the "Effects" from the first photograph. With this one, I find that the colors look really great the way that they are and there is no need to adjust them in any way. If your photo looks like it could use a little pizazz, then just go to the Effects tab and play around a bit until you find something you like.
Now, I'll jump over to the "Frames" tab, just like before. Since I had rounded corners on my last photo, I'm going to use a drop shadow on this one for a little variety.

And here is the finished product for this photo:
 There really isn't much of a change, but not everything needs heavy editing (unless that's what you want. As LittleKiva would say, "Rock it how YOU like it") Always play around until you find something that works for you!
Now, briefly I'm going to touch on the topic of character names. I usually use BBCode to write out my name in an interesting way, but sometimes I use Picnik or Photoshop (don't laugh - I'm still using Photoshop 7 because my laptop can't run anything higher than that!) I really don't have any specific tutorials for this. Images of character names can be incredibly varied. So like the photographs, just play around with things until you get something that you like. Your imagination will lead you to something epic, I am sure!
Once you have all of your images, upload them to Photobucket so we can use them later.

Some Basics in Code 。◕‿◕。So now you've got an idea of what photos, symbols and colors you want to use in your posting format. Excellent! Now all you need to do is put it all together using BBCode. I always put together my code in Notepad and test it in my test thread on Gaia. That way, if for some reason I lose the window that I'm using to test on Gaia, then I don't lose the code I worked my rear off for.
I highly recommend downloading Notepad2. Personally, I find it worlds easier to work with than the regular Notepad that comes on PCs. If you'd rather just use Notepad to build your code, that works as well, but I still highly suggest you get your hands on Notepad2.
Alright, let's build that posting format!
First, I open Notepad2 and my photobucket album that contains all of the photos I have uploaded so that when I need it, I may copy and paste the direct link codes.

Now, let's get those images into your post. I will start with the first image that I created in the first post.
[img]DIRECTLINKHERE[/img]
If I use the code above, my image will look like this next to my text:
 Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum. Phasellus elementum sem id libero hendrerit iaculis id a justo. Aliquam erat volutpat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Praesent laoreet consectetur iaculis. Mauris at est enim. In faucibus dui at elit mattis imperdiet bibendum dui tristique. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Nulla lobortis magna sollicitudin lectus congue vehicula.
This is effective if you want your picture positioned at the top of your text. However, if you are like me, you'll want it to be to the right of your image. To do this, we're going to use the following piece of code:
[imgeft]DIRECTLINKHERE[/imgleft]
Now, we will get something that looks like this.
 Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum. Phasellus elementum sem id libero hendrerit iaculis id a justo. Aliquam erat volutpat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Praesent laoreet consectetur iaculis. Mauris at est enim. In faucibus dui at elit mattis imperdiet bibendum dui tristique. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Nulla lobortis magna sollicitudin lectus congue vehicula.
If you want your text to be centered vertically with your picture, just use the "Enter" key at the top of your paragraph of text until you line it up for what looks good to you. Et voila!

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum. Phasellus elementum sem id libero hendrerit iaculis id a justo. Aliquam erat volutpat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Praesent laoreet consectetur iaculis. Mauris at est enim. In faucibus dui at elit mattis imperdiet bibendum dui tristique. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Nulla lobortis magna sollicitudin lectus congue vehicula.
Now, my personal preference is to have all of the pictures lined up in the way that I want them prior to fiddling with my text. So let's add the second photo from the first post. It can really be placed anywhere in the post that you like. Sometimes I put it towards the top, sometimes it's the bottom. Whichever I think looks good. In this case, I'm going to put it on the bottom right. To do this, I use the "imgright" code. This is similar to the "imgleft" that I used to position the picture above, except it aligns the picture to the right.
[imgright]DIRECTLINKHERE[/imgright]
And then we get this:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum.
Now, let's put this all together and see how it looks:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum. Phasellus elementum sem id libero hendrerit iaculis id a justo. Aliquam erat volutpat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Praesent laoreet consectetur iaculis. Mauris at est enim. In faucibus dui at elit mattis imperdiet bibendum dui tristique. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Nulla lobortis magna sollicitudin lectus congue vehicula.

Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum.
For the sake of this tutorial not taking seven million years (I honestly don't believe that I'm going to live that long). I've just whipped up a quick image of this character's name in Photoshop. I'm going to position the image at the top of what I have so far. Remember the [ img] code from before? That's what we're going to use to position this image. Also, I'm going to align it in the center to make it look neater. So, the code being:
[align=center] [img]DIRECTLINKHERE[/img] [/align]
Yes, I am quite aware that the name look silly. I was trying to think up something off the top of my head, and the only thing I could think of was what I chose for my "scene name" when I was a teenager. Silly, I know. XD Also, I guess now you guys know what my real name is here. But that's fine. =)

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum. Phasellus elementum sem id libero hendrerit iaculis id a justo. Aliquam erat volutpat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Praesent laoreet consectetur iaculis. Mauris at est enim. In faucibus dui at elit mattis imperdiet bibendum dui tristique. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Nulla lobortis magna sollicitudin lectus congue vehicula.

Nulla pharetra sollicitudin dapibus. Nulla in nisi vel erat gravida feugiat. Aliquam porttitor vehicula bibendum.
Sweet. So it's starting to look like a posting format! Only a few more things to touch on.
The first being the size of the text. For this entire tutorial I am using a size ten font. I find that smaller fonts always look better when roleplaying. I usually stick to size ten and size eleven. I think that they look the best.
[size=10]text text[/size]
text text
[size=11]text text[/size]
text text Alright. The next thing to touch on is colors. I usually like to keep the main text in my posts to black or dark slate gray You can grab various different colors from the previous post in this tutorial. The code for adding different colors is as follows:
[color=darkslategray][/color] Look at me! I'm darkslategray!Now, we'll cover text alignment. There are four different times of alignment:1- Left-aligned - Text is aligned to the left with the right margin having line endings at various different places. 2. Right-aligned - Text is aligned to the right with the left margin having line beginnings at various different places. 3. Center-aligned - Text is aligned in the center with both right and left margins ending at various different places. 4. Justify-aligned - Both right and left margins of the text are equal. The text will automatically adjust the spacing so that both margins always line up. Allow me to ramble on here for a second so that you can see what I am talking about. La de da~ I'm currently listening to Britney Spears and it makes me feel cool. kthx.
The various codes for each of these are as follows:
[align=left]OMG, I'm left aligned![/align]
[align=right]OMG, I'm right aligned![/align]
[align=center]OMG, I'm center aligned![/align]
[align=justify]OMG, I'm justified![/align]
Okay, for the rest of this section I'm going to cover some basic text decoration. [b]kcool, I'm bolded.[/b] kcool, I'm bolded.[i]kcool, I'm italicized.[/i] kcool, I'm italicized.[u]kcool, I'm underlined.[/u] kcool, I'm underlined.[strike]kcool, I'm struck-out.[/strike] kcool, I'm struck-out.

Dialog and Thoughts 。◕‿◕。A really great way to distinguish your characters speech and thoughts from the regular text is to spice it up with some BBCode. These are the "unwritten rules" that I've noticed with a lot of roleplayers:
1. Speech in bold and colored in a different color than your main text. An example of this being:
Upon waking up from her nightmare, Missa began to gasp for air. It was almost as if her chest had been sat on while she slept. Looking to her mother who was standing next to her bedside, she spoke softly, "I had the dream again...."
[color=black]Upon waking up from her nightmare, Missa began to gasp for air. It was almost as if her chest had been sat on while she slept. Looking to her mother who was standing next to her bedside, she spoke softly, [/color][color=palevioletred]"[b]I had the dream again....[/b]"[/color]
2. Thoughts are italicized and also colored. Here is an example:
Her mother could tell just by the way her daughter awoke that something was wrong. This was not the first time that Missa had been afflicted with the same nightmare. It would not be the last either.
[color=black]Her mother could tell just by the way her daughter awoke that something was wrong. This was not the first time that Missa had been afflicted with the same nightmare.[/color][color=palevioletred][i]It would not be the last either.[/i][/color]
Now, simply because I am completely a**l about this with my own dialog I'm going to share a few grammatical things with you. Don't worry, if you don't adhere to these, I won't freak out and never RP with you. That would just be silly. This is mainly just for general knowledge. (And no, before you ask, I'm not an English major. I've just picked up these skills from the absolutely amazing English teachers I have had throughout high school).

Fancy Additions 。◕‿◕。So, we've got our basic post format. We know how to format the text so that it looks pretty. Now, all we need to do is add some fancy stuff to what we have to give it that extra little bit of spunk! Personally, I like to add some lyrics and quotes as well as some neat little symbols.
Some examples of ways you can incorporate lyrics into your format. (My secret to picking song lyrics? I always have my playlist on shuffle. When it comes time to add lyrics I skip forward three songs and pick my favorite lyrics from that particular song. This is used for whenever I don't have a distinct song in mind to use.) In this case, I got the song "Getting Away with Murder" by Papa Roach so I am going to pick some lyrics from that to show you different neat examples of sticking lyrics in your formats. (Note: Colors and symbols are great here!)
Example one Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness I need to c▪a▪l▪c▪u▪l▪a▪t▪e what creates my own madness
[color=dimgray]Somewhere beyond[/color][color=mediumblue] happiness[/color][color=dimgray] and [i]sadness[/i] I need to[/color] [color=mediumblue]c[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]a[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]l[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]c[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]u[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]l[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]a[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]t[/color][color=dimgray]▪[/color][color=mediumblue]e[/color] [color=dimgray]what creates my own [strike][b]madness[/b][/strike][/color]
Example two ➳➳And I'm A|D|D|I|C|T|E|D to your punishment.
[color=pink]➳➳[/color][color=gray]And I'm[/color] [color=pink][b]A|D|D|I|C|T|E|D[/b][/color] [color=gray] to your punishment.[/color]
Those are just some quick examples of what you an do. Realistically there are many, many ways to spice up your posts.

Putting it all Together 。◕‿◕。I've combined everything that I have used in this tutorial together to make one post format which looks like this: Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness I need to c▪a▪l▪c▪u▪l▪a▪t▪e what creates my own madness Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Cras dignissim placerat volutpat. Mauris lobortis dolor id ipsum vehicula luctus. Nam pulvinar posuere sem et tincidunt. Curabitur facilisis bibendum urna, at placerat lorem egestas quis. Suspendisse potenti. Nulla mattis velit in est euismod fringilla. Aenean a semper metus. Cras dignissim urna sed ligula ultrices id fringilla ante aliquet. Phasellus mattis leo nec eros mollis gravida. Mauris pellentesque vehicula massa a gravida. c** sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturient montes, nascetur ridiculus mus.
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Pellentesque at est sapien, ac blandit urna. Ut hendrerit neque nec nulla lacinia gravida. Morbi orci ligula, ornare nec tincidunt vitae, tempor eget magna. Nam tincidunt adipiscing malesuada. Quisque eu diam est," sed faucibus ipsum.

Just as a helpful tip, if for some reason your code isn't working and you see [ color=color] [ size=size#] and whatnot everywhere you probably haven't closed a tag somewhere. (A tag being this: [ color=color]. A closed tag being [/ color].) Just scan through the document and take a look at anything you might have missed, because about 99.9% of the time for me, that's what my problem is. Sometimes it takes a few reads through your code to find the error, but with practice you will get used to picking things out!
