listing of possible era off th top of my head I also mention where this ideas stems from in case poel what to check them out.
An era wherne noble samuri fight evil for honer while dealing with clan politics . Mighty shamens converse with spirits and Wu jen bend the elements to thier will while resisting to temtation to delve into the forbiden practices. Monks seek to elightn them slevs and other whiel honeing thier bodies to be able to do seemingl fantic thing like break stone and even fly (DnD orential adventures, Legend of the five rings series and countless samuri, ninja, and kung fu movies and anima.)
Ad era where Knights joust each other and battle evil beings. Druids honer anchinet deites and nature whlie sorcers consort with fey creatures for good or evil. the common perons serves thei monarch execpt in some places where it has grown corrupted and they rebl in hopes of better life and that the evils of thes evil men and women are brought forth to thier benevelent king or queen. Magialc wepaon and relics are the goals of quests and tend to be guarded and has histories about them (excaliber d20 setting, St George and the dragon, king aurther legend, robin hood legend.)
An ancient era when deities have a more active hand in the affaires of mortal. Men and women fight in huge areas and collisiums for many reason ranging from glory to freedom. magic is primal in nauter and other then diviners and orcles, many times mistrusted. Mystic items tend to be gifts form one of the gods and many mystical creature likt the minatur and pegasus are know to exist. (greek and romen myth, herc the legendary journies, Xena warrior pirncess, Gladiater, Clah of the titans, the Oddsey, Troy, 300, and coutless hec mivies and sword and sandle movies)
A modern era the seem like any normal one execpt for magic esists. Creatures of fantasy share the world with human but are not noticed execpt by some humans that can see things are they really are. That the bank robber is really an orc and not some dude in a rubber mask, That and explison was casued by a spell and not a gas leak, and that old secperrt lockin in the musuem could unless a mass of undead in the wrong hands. The beings and creature the live aside man run the smae gambut of this ad man does, from the helpful kobold short order cook or elven park ranger to the evil effreti CEO of a fortune 500 business or power mad cultist that want to sumon forth their otherworldly master for some dark porpuse. (d20 modern, World of darkness, Special unit 2, Buffy the vampire slayer, angel, the dresdan files series, Kolcak the night stalker, Supernatural.)
A possible future where the enemy has won and the last remaing forces of good fight a gurillia war aginst evil. (more then a few series that had the episode where some person saw what might have been had they not existed)
A possible future where man has reached beyind earth and int space and met other races other then thier own. groups ot races form alliances and federations for trade and defense reasons and space is another frontier to explore. (Star trek, Buck rogers, Firefly)
A possible future where mankind and other races pilot Giant mechanic robots creautere to aid them. (Robotech/Macross, Gundum series, Many other mech animaand games)
A possible era where steam tech became the way of progress. (Many steampunk animia and games.)
Aera much like victorien england except for the fact dark things exist. Mad men of science create abominations in thier quest to surpass god. Magic while thought of as nothing more as palor tricks and such does exist and can corrupt the unwarey. Vampires roam the night feeding on a pople that think them but a myth. Mummies denfed thier ancient tombs from would be grave robber, And on certin nights Men become animals that hunt for live prey. Despite the disbleif of such things there are those that do indeed belive thes things exist and indeed face them as defenders of mankind. (Lovecraft, Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy (karloff version), Frankenstien, Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde, League of exsrodnary gentleman, Caption Kronos the vampire hunter, Masque of the red death RPG setting)

came up with a few more
An era when the maericai west was being explored. Gunslinger lived and died by teh gun and great herds of catel romaed the plains along bufflo. However there is a side unseen here. where indian medicmen use rtuals handed down for genrations to helas and protect their tribes. Americains Bring thiers inguinty with them as the iron horses of the railway bring more over with thier machines and greed. Marshals and sheriffs deal with not only the people and do what they can to keep the peace but also must deal with things that were never mentioned wen they took thier jobs including ancient animals spirits, ghost, shapshifters, and even at time the undead. (from just about any wierd wierd west thing plaus red death setting. the Wild Wild West, Rifleman and other gunslinger shows and movies)
An Alternate relaity where a powerful force has taken the land and heros of several smilier eras and merged them in one place so that he could test his power aginst these men and woman of legend. Now thes mene and women must not only deal wiht old foes and alinces but forge new ones wiht thes similer yet diffnret factions whiel ther forece that did all this tests the bonds of old and new allinces and even sways some to his own side for thier own various reasons even as the force opposed to this new foe in thier own way work to stop him. (Warriors Orochi series of games)
A possible future where beside the nations, powerful companies control world power from thier lofy building. These power use pawns in tehir shadow games of corprate espionage, hireng mercenaries form varios backgrounds form teh strret thung that did well ther the ex copr secirrity head that is still hutned by his fomrer employers. Informations is like money if you know the right people and they do not try to kill you once ther get what they want. The boundries of what is humna is futher and further pushed as ever new and better cybernetice hit the market and some decide to becoem more machine then man. Even robotics has advance to teh point of borderline Ai and robots that look almost human. Gentics has goen to the poitn that some poelp porpusly add animla dna to themsleve to make themsleve more exotic or to gain certin advantages without out having to add machiner to themselves.(Ghost in teh Shell, Shadow Run game, Johnny Pnemonic, Armitage series, Bubblegum crisis, Tank Police I am Robot, Blade Runner. and similer)
