Ishekhesi had just completed a big move. The carvers had outdone themselves, but the rocks they had chosen for this newest shrine were the largest yet. He had to be laced into a harness just to drag the stone downhill, and he was sore all over. Luckily, only the one had to be moved today. Unfortunately, he hurt now. And if he didn't do something about this soreness, he wouldn't be able to move anything tomorrow.
The big lion padded down to the stream. He wasn't big on swimming, but he thought the water running over him might sooth his aching muscles.
As he waded in, he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye. He wasn't really paying attention though; he was too focused on the water.

Jatayu was currently doing what he usually did best -- blending in. At least, he thought that's what he did best. Jatayu wasn't the type to be in anyone's face, really, but ever since he first saw Ishekhesi he'd tried to keep in the big lion's shadows. The work of the Shifter absolutely fascinated the little leopard boy, yet his mother had always warned him not to be a nuisance to the others in the pride.
He'd taken her words to heart.
Jatayu figured that the lion must be thirsty when he first saw the lion move towards the water. He watched the lion from a distance, yearning to mimic each move the large male lion made.

Ishekhesi relaxed for a few minutes in the cool water, but he felt like he was being watched. And it was bugging him. Maybe he was being paranoid, but he was nervous that someone he knew from the old days would come looking for him and ruin what he had with the Shrinekeepers.
Ishekhesi tried to ignore it for a long while, but he finally turned back toward the bank. He wanted to call whoever it was out - even if it was just a hiding bird or something.
He even tried to shout so whoever was spying on him could hear him.
"Is someone there? Come out and let me see you."

Uh oh. He'd been found out. Puffing himself out as big as he could, Jatayu strutted his way out from the shadows. He tried to move just like he'd seen Ishekhesi do, and the little leopard cub made his way to the cool water -- even dipped his feet in the stuff -- before looking towards the large green shifter. Chest puffed out, Jatayu tried to make his voice as deep as possible.
"I was just over there in the shade," he explained, which was only half a lie. Jatayu coughed as his voice broke on the last word, and it embarrassed the little cub. He just wanted to impress Ishekhesi so badly and it wasn't working very well.
"I'm Jatayu," he continued, giving up the big tough-guy act.

Ishekhesi was puzzled. Another cub following him around? Where were they all coming from? And didn't they have moms or something that should be watching them and making sure they didn't get flattened by rocks or scare the fecal matter out of giant, paranoid lions who were just trying to take a dip?
"Oh. Uh, hello, Jatayu. I thought you were . . . something else. What were you doing over there in the shade?"
Now that he knew nothing bad was over there, Ishekhesi plowed through the water toward the little cub, and sat down with the water frothing around his front knees. The water he displaced formed a little wave around him.
"I"m just puzzled because it seems like I keep finding cubs around, and I'm not sure where you all keep coming from."

"I came from my mom," Jatayu said, giving the lion a confused look. Now, he wasn't completely sure about the mechanics of that kind of thing, really, so that answer would have to suffice. "She says to keep out of the way, but I just like watching you because you're so big and stuff. I want to be a shifter," he said softly, eying Ishekhesi.
"What's your name," he asked -- really, he demanded it, but very nicely. Jatayu was a polite cub. "And why do you talk so quiet?" That was strange. Jatayu thought for certain that he'd have a big loud boomy voice, but no, the green giant didn't have the voice that Jatayu imagined he'd have. That was weird.

Another one? Why did all the cubs in the pride want to be shifters- and why did they keep coming to him? Ok, there we're probably more cubs in the pride- but these were the only ones he'd seen.
"My name is Ishekhesi, and I talk quietly because awhile ago I was in a fight and my throat got hurt, so I can't be as loud as I used to be."
He didn't really want to go into a whole lot more then that . . . but hopefully it would be enough for the little cub.
"How big are your parents? If they're big, you'll probably be big enough to be a shifter, too."

Jatayu really, really wanted to know how Ishekhesi's throat had been hurt. He really did. But his mama had taught him that it was important not to be a pest, and for a moment Jatayu debated disobeying his mama and just outright asking the lion how his throat had been hurt. After a swift opening and closing of his mouth, though, Jatayu decided that it was a question best left unasked and instead he answered the lion's question.
"Well," he said thoughtfully, "They're not real big, I guess... but maybe I'll be bigger'n them!!" He hoped so, anyways. He really wanted to be a shifter.

Ishekhesi seemed relieved that the little leopard was focusing on his own future as a Shifter rather then Ishekhesi's past.
"There's more to being a Shifter then being big. You can be as big as a rhino, and if you're not strong it won't get you anywhere. There's another little cub that's training with smaller rocks so she can get all of her muscles in shape before she has to start moving the big rocks. And we have a new shifter in the pride that's very small, but he knows so much about rocks that it doesn't matter that he can't move the big ones."

"I been watching you," Jatayu mumbled, eyes wide as he peered at Ishekhesi. "I been watching you shift rocks. You're real good at it, and I want to learn everything that you know." He fudged his toe into the ground a little sheepishly, eyes downcast as he drew up the nerve to ask the large lion his next question.
"I promise to stay outta the way if you show me everything there is to know 'bout shifting," Jatayu didn't want to beg, but he couldn't help the way he sounded just now. "I promise I won't get in the way. I'll just watch you and I swear I won't be a pest. I'm real good at staying out of the way."

Ishekhesi knew there was very little point in protesting. Even if he told the leopard cub that he couldn't watch him, he'd just go after another shifter or try and be sneaky about it and wind up hurt.
"Look, I'll give you the same deal I gave the other cub. You can watch me, an you can help, as long as you follow directions, ok? You have to let me know when you're around, you have to do what I tell you, and if I tell you you have to move or get out of the way you have to do it. Otherwise you might get hurt and we don't want that. Do we have a deal?
At this rate, he wouldn't have to bother with any of the smaller stones because he would have a troupe of cubs following around behind him, just waiting for him to tell them to take on the rocks. With luck, it would help them be more productive, and not slow them down.

Yes! Jatayu couldn't keep the glee in. He gave a little squeal and spun in a quick circle. He couldn't wait to tell his mom and his siblings that he was going to be a shifter! Once he'd calmed down, Jatayu bounced once and nodded his head vigorously.
"We have a deal, we have a deal!" He squeaked, marching in place.
"I'ma go tell my mom. I'ma go tell my mom! I'll see you tomorrow, mister Ishekhesi. I swear I won't get in the way. I promise."
Offering the large green lion one last grin, Jatayu sprinted off. He halted a ways away and turned to glance over his shoulder to shout, "We have a deal!"
After all, he didn't want Ishekhesi to forget!

Ishekhesi shook his head. The leopard cub hadn't even waited to find out where he would be tomorrow. Oh well. He had know doubt Jatayu - and his other cubling follower - would track him down and be ready to work. For now, he was going to finish his soak in the water.
