Nessie found herself peering out of the water at what appeared to be some kind of Kalona. She'd always heard they were an evil sort, what did this one want her? This was her home, her place... Was she thinking that maybe she could terrorize her, Nessie? As if! She wasn't afraid of a Kalona. That might be foolish to think, but Nessie know that her mighty jaws and ability to dive and swim gave her a great advantage. Something rose within her, an idea. A mean idea, but a justified one--or so she thought. She would terrorized this Kalona, show her what it was like to be the one receiving the terror.

Branwen was unaware of the creature watching her from the water. She had intended to stray away from her mate and father-in-law for a moment, since the two were quite absorbed in their knightly training. And while they were busy she thought she would just take a quick swim. Sure, it was just a bit chilly for that but it would give her an excuse to snuggle close to Lafayette later. Chuckling softly at her thoughts she made her way to the water's edge, gingerly dropping a hoof in. It was cold. It was really cold. Enough to make her wince just a bit as the water touched her skin, "Ooo....Maybe this wasn't such a good idea..."
She was second guessing her decision. But she had come this far, she couldn't just wuss out now! In the very least she could wade around a bit, it wouldn't be as bad if it were just her legs in the water. Scrunching up her face she decided to just get it over with quickly and jumped into the water. It was really a bit over dramatic, considering the water hardly even reached her knees. Branwen gritted her teeth and waited for the sting of the chilly water to subside.

Nessie found herself swimming closer to the "evil." The female was in much to shallow water yet to do anything yet...She couldn't reach her yet, but the desire to was very great in her...
She'd never felt this yearning to terrorize someone, to show them pain. And she delighted in the savageness of it, but she was repelled....horrified. She was scared of the feelings going on inside her, but at the same time she reveled in it. It was an amazing sense of power, of release.
She didn't want to go back to how she was before, it was a great emotional release. Why did she have to not be the monster? Why not be the monster?
Monsters weren't so bad. She could be a monster, and no one could stop her. No one would bother her again, they'd never laugh again....

Eventually she got accustomed to the water's temperature and even dared to go just a bit deeper. She waded further into the water but didn't let it go past her chest, she wanted to keep her wings dry. Her tail trailed behind her like a snake as she wandered around in the water. The one thing she really didn't mind about being part kalona, the smooth, arrow-tipped tail was so much more easy to handle than a mass of hair like the rest of her family had.
But it was still a symbol of her darker blood, like her horns, cloven hooves and the tiny canines she tried her best to hide even still. If she could, she would trade all of these to look like the rest of her relatives. Even if it meant getting unruly hair as a tail. At least she wouldn't instantly be judged based solely on her looks any more. But that wasn't such a big deal any more, she had people who knew and loved her for who she was and they were the ones who mattered.

She felt the emotions overwhelming her more and more, she was the monster in this moment. She was done with fighting with trying to not be evil. There was no more guilt as these waves of emotion washed over her.
Her eyes watched through the water as the kalona waded in. Opening her mouth, she let her teeth shine through the water. Without another thought, she lunged forward, thrashing. She wanted to protect her home, her place...She had to strike now!

From the corner of her eye, Branwen caught something flashing in the water. Something that seemed different from the sunlight being reflected on the lake's surface. Before she even had the chance to investigate it something lunged out of the water at her. She had no clue what it was, her mind had shot into flight mode far too quickly for her to even think about looking at what was attacking.
With hooves flailing, wings flapping and other very chaotic movements, Branwen tried her best to make her way to the shore. But the suction of the water around her legs was making that difficult. All she could think was that her father or one of her sisters had managed to learn how to swim and was here to eat her like they had threatened to so many times. What would Lafayette do if she didn't return home? Would he look for her only to find a skeleton? That thought was what made her start crying. Not the fact that some unknown danger was possibly about to pounce on her but the thought of her love finding her body after the deed was done. And it seemed to be enough to force her to push through the water and make it to the shore.
But once she was there she lost her footing, stumbled and fell to her knees. And that was it. She was certain she was a goner now. All she could do now was was hope that it would be quick and painless.

Nessie had expected a lot of things when she lunged. She had expected claws, blood, writhing, chaos--so many things. She'd been prepared for hooves to tear into her skin or fangs to pierce her hide. She'd been prepared for the flapping wings, even cunning guile--but this, this she had never expected.
Tears, soft feminine tears. She had backed off, stopped her gnashing and flailing, let the creature make it's way to land where it collapsed in sobs. Nessie was taken back, a Kalona...crying?
She studied the sobbing wracked body, not Kalona wings...those of a Wind. It's appearances...she had assumed. She had become the monster, this--this girl was no more an evil Kalona then she was--well that wasn't true anymore.
After what she had done, she was a monster. Vile, evil...she could not disillusion herself anymore. She choked out in her low, gutteral voice. "I'm, sorry...I thought." She paused, "I won't hurt you."

She couldn't understand. Where were the teeth? The claws, the tearing of flesh? Was whatever had lunged out of the water waiting? She practically jumped out of her skin as the mer's voice reached her ears. And it took her a moment to register what she had said. Daring to peek behind her, Branwen was quite surprised at what she saw. She'd heard of the mer soquili but never actually seen one. Fear was slowly being replaced with curiosity as this new creature seemed to be less of a threat than she thought.
Getting to her feet, the mare turned to face Nessie, sniffling a bit as she recovered from her tears, "I-I'm sorry if this is your lake...I didn't mean to trespass...." It was the only reason she could think of for such a dramatic change in personality in this water-dwelling creature, other than just being completely insane. And if that was the case, if this soquili was actually crazy....well, Branwen would just stay on the safe side and remain on land for a while.

She watched as the creature's eyes turned from fear to interest. She could see what she perceived as shudders, probably at her horrid skin, from the girl. "Yes," Nessie's voice was low, very unused to talking. "This is my home. I thought you were...Kalona." She felt ashamed to admit it.
She had attacked this girl on an assumption of what she might be. Guessing at what she would be like...why she was here. It was unfair to the girl and she was sorry. "I'm so...sorry." She hid her head down, "I thought you brought danger. The sniffling, the tears...the fear and terror, almost like a small child, hurt Nessie deeply. She was becoming a monster...

Thought she was Kalona? Well, that really wasn't far from the truth. And Nessie wasn't the first to make that mistake, albeit, she was the first to have such a strong reaction. But at least she seemed to recognize that Branwen wasn't malevolent, like some tended not to. Giving a small, slightly awkward smile the mare tried to ease the situation, "It's alright. I shouldn't have come into your home like that."
She was beginning to believe that the mer really didn't mean her harm. After all, if a kalona had wandered into her home she wouldn't exactly welcome them with open wings. Besides, there was a look in her eyes that showed true remorse for what she had done and she hadn't actually hurt Branwen, "No harm, no foul....Right?"

Nessie shook her head, "How can you forgive me?" It didn't make sense. She had just about chomped this girl in two, had tried her very best and she was forgiving her. What difference was it if she didn't get hurt if that was what Nessie had initially intended?
"I've proved it. What I've fought so hard against. I've proved I'm the monster others see me to be." She felt the overwhelming sadness come over her, the torment and anguish. This was what it was like to truly be the scourge of the earth, but to feel it with humanity. Monster and Humanity, it was a heavy weight.

Branwen was truly touched by Nessie's words. She was caught up in the same conflict the half-kalona had gone through herself. It brought back memories of her own fears of becoming a monster. It had taken the bond she had with her family and love she formed with Lafayette to help her through it. Somehow, though, Branwen was willing to bet that this mare didn't have anyone like that to help her. But maybe she could change that.
"But you haven't. In fact, you've proven the opposite. If you really were a monster you wouldn't feel sorry. I've seen monsters before, and you're not one. You're just...conflicted, like I was." She really hoped she could help Nessie. Her own struggle had been such a burden on her. If she could help another through the same thing...Maybe it would mean that she herself had finally, truly come to terms with who she was.

Nessie kept her eyes shut, the image of her viciousness playing over and over in her mind. "You...were conflicted?" Nessie looked up. Someone else who knew the pain she was going through, "But how did you fight it? There are parts of me, that want to do things...things that repulse me."
She shook her head in frustration, "I am Nessie, I've only ever been the Loch Ness Monster. They've called me that since I was born."

"I had lots of friends and family that believed in me. The hardest one to convince wasn't those around me, they all knew I wasn't a monster. It turned out I was the hardest to convince." There was something almost cathartic about telling her story to someone else. Her family members were all aware of her struggle ever since she was born, so there had never been any need to tell them. But having this stranger, who was so much like herself, listen seemed to lessen a burden she thought she had rid herself of, "It's not easy, but if you have others to support you then you can do it."
Branwen smiled kindly at Nessie and moved closer to the water, laying down at its edge, "Just because they call you that doesn't mean it's true. I know someone named Rocket, but that doesn't mean he is one, does it?" She gave a sheepish grin, hoping this would help ease some of the mer's mental anguish.

Nessie smiled at her, trying to show she meant no harm. "I have no one like that. No one to help me, not really." She looked at the girl, envying her support system and...well, her hair. Land-goers had such lovely hair.
Edging forward, she tried to cover her teeth--to downplay their prescence. "I am..so sorry."
