Xiu hit the unyielding ground with a sickening thud. It was the blood that made it the worst. Xiu could feel it slick beneath him and he vaguely realized that his robes were ruined as he lay there in a daze with Jianyu’s hand wrapped around his ankle. He tried to gather his wits, tried to shut out Jianyu’s words and remembered all the things that Sakn had taught him. Fight with everything you’ve got.
“How should I know how it happened? It could be your own fault for all I know.” Harsh, but he didn’t care and some small part of him wanted to hurt Jianyu as much as he’d been hurt. Xiu struggled against that iron grip, scrambling for purchase against the slick grass. He swiveled his hips and shot out his leg in rotating kick, trying to hit Jianyu in the head. Not to maim of course, but only to be given a few moments to escape.
“Let me go Jianyu! Go back to your lords!”

My own fault.
The words reverberated throughout Jianyu's mind, echoed inside of his skull like some sort of demented game of tag. He felt a ripple of horror seize his chest again, ice accumulating around his heart, and for a moment he was dragged back into his memories, feeling the rush of terror as the knife was swung upwards, the second of panic, of complete and utter helplessness and hopelessness. And then, finally, the feel of the blade as it ripped down his face, the taste of blood on his tongue, covering his face.
"NO!"
The scream ripped out of him unintentionally, and Jianyu barely felt Xiu's kick to his head, his fingers loosening barely enough to let the younger boy scramble away. Staggering to his feet, Jianyu pressed a hand to his head, trying to stop the memories, the pain.
Make it go away. Please, goddess Lunaria, make it go away.
Following after Xiu, Jianyu grabbed him by the back of his shirt, throwing him to the ground. Within seconds he was kneeling atop of him, pinning the boy's wrists.
Please, someone, anyone - make it go away.

Xiu flung himself away, feet slipping in the grass as Jianyu’s scream filled his ears. The pain in that voice almost made him hesitate, the strong urge to comfort Jianyu surging to the fore. Xiu refused though. His brain told him that he’d be killed if he lingered any longer. What in the gods’ name was wrong with Jianyu. What happened to the confident young man he’d known? What happened to that kindness? It was almost like nothing was left.
He could barely find purchase to stand before he was slammed into the ground with a shriek of anger. He thrashed, arms and legs failing widely until grabbed his wrists and sat on him. Xiu bucked, trying to throw Jianyu off. He didn’t think himself capable of a head butt so he just continued to twist about.
“Let me the ******** go Jianyu!” He shouted, using a word he’d learned from Sakn. It let an acrid taste of his tongue, but it was oddly appropriate. “Will you kill me then? Murder me? I’m innocent!”

Jianyu let out a snort of derisive sounding laughter, the sound echoing oddly and horribly amidst the otherwise silent forest. "Someone's been learning a lot of big words lately, haven't they?" he said, raising an eyebrow, but then let out a snarl of anger as one of Xiu's flailing fists broke free of his grasp, catching him in the side of his head. Jianyu fell sideways, stars reverberating in front of his eyes, and swore loudly, letting out a string of foul curses, most of which he had gained from his relationship with Bataar.
Bataar. Yet another reason for his anger. The pain in his chest intensified, making it more difficult to breathe, more difficult to even think, and Jianyu let out a small gasp for air. He reached up, fingers rapidly moving to untie the cloak tied around his neck and threw it off to the side, shoving his upper armor off as well. It was too hot, too suffocating, and he pushed himself towards Xiu, aiming his fist for the younger boy's head.
"I am not a murderer!" he screamed, his hand shaking, loosing most of his strength.

“I’ll speak any way I please!”
Luck was on his side it seemed and Xiu darted out from under Jianyu. Fear was eating at him, making it hard to move. He’d never experienced anything like this before. The war had always seemed so far away, like it hadn’t even existed. Yet now, here it was, staring him in the face. Taunting him. He ignored Jianyu. Didn’t care why the male was stripping. It didn’t matter. Living did.
Xiu staggered forward, falling to his knees again, his hands meeting the body of one of the corpse. He fumbled through the folds of fabric, his body telling him to do something his brain hadn’t yet comp rending. He pushed rich and bloodied fabric aside, fingers brushing against the harshness of a scabbard. His life saver.
At least if would have been if that fist hadn’t collided with his head. His vision swam and black out for a moment, the even seemingly weak punch to his temple sending him sprawling over the corpse below him. Unable to fight past the throbbing of his head, Xiu moaned softly as he desperately yelled at himself to get up.

Jianyu hadn't thought that his punch would have been that hard; after all, it had been a weak one, and he had never been all that physically adept when it came to close-range, hand-to-hand combat. On the contrary, it was why he had lost most of his fights with Bataar. Not only had the Mongol been outrageously strong, fit, and muscular, but he had excelled, thrived upon hand-to-hand combat, which had put Jianyu at his biggest disadvantage.
But Xiu was different; Xiu was smaller, much smaller than Bataar had been, and more slender, lithe. Jianyu's hit sent the Noble boy sprawling sideways, falling against one of the bodies in the field, and it took every ounce of Jianyu's self control not to heave. The smell of blood was all around him, suffocating him, and his fingers reached down, grasping for Xiu's collar, where he hauled him to his feet, up into the air. He did not see the knife, nor did he comprehend exactly what he was doing.
"You Nobles...are all...the same." Jianyu whispered, but the anger had turned to anguish, his throat thick with pain and frustration. He wanted to throw Xiu aside, drown himself in his own memories, his own demons, but he couldn't. His fingers tightened around the collar of Xiu's shirt without realizing it, tighter and tighter.Somebody let me go.

The knife was clenched in his hand, but he barely comprehended it as he was hauled into the air. His feet dangled uselessly as he gagged, realizing he’d been laying on a CORPSE. His skin crawled and he nearly wretched right at Jianyu’s feet but he somehow managed to contain himself as he blearily stared at the Captain. He shuddered, not liking what he saw.
Sorrow.
He saw a sorrow so deep that he wasn’t even sure he comprehended it. Even as the collar of his own shirt stole his breath, Xiu let the knife fall to the ground, fingers limp. He could have, perhaps, stabbed Jianyu. Blinded his other eye maybe in a fit of vengeance, but he couldn’t. He just couldn’t. Xiu was no warrior. He was just a monk and all he wanted was quiet.
“Ji…anyu?” Xiu reached for the male’s face, touching it gently with bloodied hands, fingers lightly touching that eye patching before falling to broad shoulders. If he could have, he would have hugged the male tightly. “Don’t be sad. It’s…okay.” Anything to make that look go away.

He was losing it. Jianyu felt as if his heart were collapsing into a million tiny pieces, shattering across the bloodied forest floor. The anger had melted away to reveal his rawest nature, and he felt horribly exposed.
"No," Jianyu whispered, his eyes still focused on the blood that streaked Xiu's face, then falling briefly to notice the knife still clenched in his slender hand. Xiu's hands were gentle, almost painfully so, as they touched his face, his covered eye. "No, I...I..."
With one hand still clutching the Noble's collar, Jianyu reached out, his fingers closing around the blade of the knife as he wrenched it out of Xiu's grasp. A stinging pain shot through his palm and up his arm, and he let go of Xiu, dropping him to the ground as he staggered backwards. Blood spattered the forest floor, followed by the knife and Jianyu felt his knees give away as he collapsed, his hands pressed against the grass. His body shook, but he refused, still didn't let himself move.
"Don't be sad. It's...okay."
His vision was clearing slightly, the haze in his mind slowly drifting aside. For the first time Jianyu saw - really saw - Xiu, lying on the ground a few feet away, and a feeling of horror welled up inside of him, threatening to choke him.
What...have I done?

Jianyu was babbling about something but Xiu didn’t understand. He didn’t understand anything as his world was upended and he was being thrown away. He crashed into the grass, blood smearing him further as his face was scrapped. He lay still after that. His body just didn’t want to listen, his brain sluggish and slow. That punch had caught him just right, despite the weakness, and he was still trying to recover.
He was just so damn tired, more so than any of the times he’d sparred with Sakngea. It was a bone kind of weary, stemming from the fight and Jianyu’s riotous emotions. It was like Xiu could almost feel them and they were cloying.
Forcing himself to move, Xiu painfully got his sore body up off the ground. His hair had come free and hung down in a soft wave around his face, some of the strands sticking to his bloodied face. He crawled back for Jianyu, wondering why he did so. The male had cut himself and despite everything else, Xiu focused on the minor wound, unnecessarily worried.
“Jianyu?” Xiu asked again, voice hoarse as he reached for the male. He didn’t know what else to do, simply reacting as he curled around Jianyu. He didn’t care that they were muddy and covered in blood. He hugged the anguished Captain, pressing close as he buried his face into beaded hair.

At first, Jianyu didn't notice the younger Noble moving towards him, didn't hear the quiet, hoarse whisper. His thoughts were still twisted, still lost inside of himself, trying to fight his way back to reality. He knew it wasn't Xiu that had killed the family - anyone could have seen that - but his heart felt as if it were being ripped apart.
Too many times have I lost what's dear to me. Too many times have I crossed the line, moved too far, lost too much.
How much more will it take for this pain to end?
Gentle hands touched his shoulders, and then Xiu's warm body was pressed against his, the younger man's face pressed into his hair. For a moment, Jianyu couldn't move, surprise and despair ricocheting against one another inside of him.
How much more can I take?
Slowly, slowly, Jianyu lifted his hands, putting his arms around Xiu hesitantly, barely touching him. But after a few seconds his hesitation vanished, and Jianyu crushed Xiu to his chest, his breathing labored, barely keeping himself from falling apart.
"I'm sorry," he breathed out hoarsely, his head against the Noble's shoulder. Jianyu turned his face, pressing a kiss to Xiu's neck, trying to keep it together, keep from collapsing, from letting the blackness seize his heart again. "Xiu, I'm sorry...I'm so sorry...!"
Let this pain leave me.

For a few dreadful moments, Xiu was sure he was going to be pushed away until Jianyu hugged him back. He heard the pitiful apologies and only smiled softly. What little anger he’d held was go, replaced with compassion for a person who’d been through too many things.
“Ssh.” Xiu murmured, fingers stroking through Jianyu’s hair. “It’s okay. I forgive you Jianyu. It’s okay.” He felt the kiss and pulled back, cupping Jianyu’s face gently with both hands. He leaned in and kissed the male’s face, each cheek and then his mouth in a reassuring kinship that went deeper than just a shallow friendship. “You’re going to be alright. I promise.” He added in a fierce whisper, willing Jianyu to believe it.
It was time to go now. There were too many bad things in this field. Xiu would sent someone from the Temple later. For now though, he was standing on wobbly legs, helping Jianyu up as well.
“Come on. Let’s leave this place.”
