I shall be doing an informative speech on the subject of Steampunk,
and I would love to hear your opinion on what I should discuss.
Sadly, the speech may only be 7 minutes long,
(Hardly enough time to tell the whole story of our beloved Steampunk)
so it must be kept short.
But I'd love to know your thoughts!

well ive always found that everyone sees it differently (unless your not actually steampunk, then you see it the same way that people see all goths as listening to marilyn manson and wear black eye liner)
i personally think of steampunk as being a mix of the inventions of the modern era, powered by the means of the victorian era, mixed with the romantic side of the victorian era. however, i also think of the Mortal Engines books as being steampunk and they are set in the future... so its really up to interpretation

I think there a lot of things that most steampunks would agree are a part of steampunk as a concept. This is just from my experience, though. It does, of course, vary by area and individual.
Adventure, for one. It's something which is tragically missing from a lot of people's lives. Through steampunk we recapture that. We are able to become the people we wish our lives would let us be. We become more ourselves.
There's also a certain gentility which is regained with steampunk. We can be rough but we also act according to certain rules of propriety. This is, in part, what makes Steampunk so appealing for people who feel out of place in "normal" circles. Propriety decrees that we act with a certain degree of politeness, and show interest in others, maintaining light conversation when possible, even if we may not initially be interested in someone.
I think a lot of us, even those of us who make our way through average society without arousing suspicion, find that in Steampunk we can actually be around people who get us. We're a little quirky, with somewhat niche interests and tastes. We watch Dr. Who without smoking pot and love it anyway. We think rust looks good. We have no problems with monochrome outfits and believe that the more cool crap we pile on our bodies the cooler we look.
Okay, so that last bit might be a overgeneralized.
The DIY ethic of steampunk is also a big deal. It's a rejection of our pre-fab, inscrutable, overly interfaced lives in this new age of technology. We want to see the gears and know how they work. We want to have real ownership over the things we "own": clothes, jewelery, accessories, props, and even our "real life" toys. We retrofit laptops, thumb drives, and instruments to look more steampunk to create this feeling. We crave the feeling we get when we say "actually, I made this myself."

http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/exhibits/steampunk/Since you're doing a presentation on steampunk, which I think is awesome, I thought perhaps this would be a good source. The Museum of the History of Science in Oxford has an exhibit on Steampunk right now, you can see a lot of the works on their website. P.^

fire - link: Oh cogs, it's 2010. I'm really bad with remembering the years. ^^; I figured they still had pictures from the opening online, that's what I saw of it, and it would be a good thing to cite in a presentation since it's a museum.
