*team rp for prompt 1 : "nov 1 to 7 - the one about the mini having a crush on your otter, and your otter seeking advice. challenges were to include something catching on fire, and the line "that's maddeningly unhelpful." " *
breakfast wandered down to the creek to see what he could catch for a snack. he paced on the water's edge, eying the riverbed. it wasn't that he was normally impatient, he just....well, ok. he was normally impatient. after a few short moments with no sight of movement underneath the surface, he snorted, then hopped onto a rock that was jutting out slightly over the creek. he crouched with his front paws on the front edge and peered down, tensing up in anticipation of a fat, juicy fish.
meanwhile...
a smallish otter trotted along through the reserve, humming to herself. she tossed her head back and forth to the rhythm, enjoying the scenery. it was days like this that she enjoyed wandering aimlessly; how could you not be in a good mood with such perfect weather, the birds chirping, a bright orange otter fishing in the distance...
wait, what? the mini did a double-take, then quickly hopped behind the nearest tree. she peeked her head around to get another look. she had never seen another otter that looked quite like this one. those extra tufts of fur, those non-retractable claws, those handsome glowing eyes...
she retreated back behind the tree, blushing. he was rather cute, and seemed to be by himself. she didn't usually approach strangers, but maybe this time, it'd be ok. the mini took a deep breath, then padded around the tree and closer to the stranger.

Snack was having a relaxing day thus far, all by himself for a change, as he walked about in no particular direction. He was stretching his legs and planning to find something to eat. Thus far nothing had caught his attention. He really wasn't keen on eating fish, again, and had hoped a rabbit or something larger would wander by.
He was passing by when a scent tickled his nose. For a moment his eyes seemed to glow more intensely as the thought of food seized his stomach. Then they returned to normal as he realized that wasn't food, it was Breakfast. Any other otter would have found this strange, surely, but not Snack. He had after all grown up eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and midnight snacks with Breakfast, Lunch, Fish Dinner, and himself--Midnight Snack.
Deciding to pay his brother a visit, Snack swung about--ignoring the slight scent of a mini otter for the time being--and made to find the orange male. It didn't take him long to find his sibling crouching on a rock, waiting for a fish. He grinned, trotting down the edge of the water and turning to use his tail to send a wave of water towards his brother.
"'lo Brekfie," he greeted with a laugh.

breakfast leaned back and shielded his face with a front paw as the wave splashed towards him. he looked at his brother with a look of total annoyance. "whuttdya doin'?" he grumbled. "you d'sturb thuh fish." he gave one more sideways glance at snack, then turned his gaze back down to the water. he liked his brother and all, but he was hungry, darnit!
meanwhile...
as the mini neared, she took a few deep breaths. she ran through her introduction in her head - she certainly didn't want to look like a fool in front of this very cute stranger. she paused next to a small puddle about a hundred feet away from the creek, checking her reflection to make sure that her fur was tidy and that there were no stray berry stains or fish scales. first impressions mattered!
when she looked up, a second otter had joined the orange one. he looked exactly like the first, except this one was black, green, and white, with piercing yellow eyes. she gave a loud gasp of surprise, then slapped her paws over her mouth. she crouched down and squinted her eyes closed, but she was sure that they had heard her.

His nose wrinkled up at the mention of fish, "Whud you wan' feesh for?" he huffed. He was about to send another wave of water towards his brother, perhaps then he'd give up fishing and they could find real food, when he heard a loud gasp of air. His face froze as he inhaled deeply and then grinned.
"Minnnnnniiiiii," he growled, stomach echoing the sentiment. He turned his head eyes searching for the little one he smelled. He didn't see it but it had to be close. "We could catch mini meal," he suggested turning back to his sibling.
It sure sounded a lot better than fish. And surely between the two of them they could catch a mini. Perhaps it had a friend and they could each have one to eat. The fact of the matter was, Snack's stomach was doing all of the thinking.

Small paws scrambled frantically through the bracken as Ritz darted past trees and sprinted over roots in a panicked haste, casting a quick glance over her shoulder every few seconds. The glowing fairy floating over her head zipped about like a hysterical glow bug. The mini had the misfortune of coming across an otter, who was tearing apart a misplaced camping back and demolishing most of its contents. When the small, glowing otter shrieked in alarm how the bag was someone else's property and clearly shouldn't be dealt with so violently, the other otter (who perhaps was a runt for its kind, but still bigger than her) whipped its head out of the bag, revealing a murderous pair of glowing eyes and razor-sharp fangs latched onto a small, clear, plastic, retangular container with ignitable fluid inside.
It was then Ritz knew she was a Very Sorry Otter.
She ran from the site as quickly as she could, having the feeling she was being chased despite not seeing the otter directly behind her, and searched wildly for the safest place to hide, or someone to protect her. And then there he was. In a bold shade of ginger with obsidian-like eyes, Ritz discovered the perfect form of a knight in shining, orange-fuzzy armor. And boy was he a looker~! He had a friend with him as well, which the mini supposed could be helpful...
"My hero!!!" she trilled in excitement as she rushed in the direction of the orange male, completely oblivious to the fact that he and the black otter were of the same subspecies of the otter in pursuit of her-- but collided into the back of another mini before she could even reach them. "Ommffhh! Gah! Sorry!!" she squeaked apologetically, probably blowing the mini's cover. "I didn't see you!! You see, I was-- Oh wait, do you know those two males over there? Do you think they can help??" the bright blue mini asked rapidly, giving no time to explain her situation.

breakfast glowered at his brother. "i like fish. they small 'n stoopid 'n tasty. nao go 'way." he turned back once more to the creek, half tuning out snack. however, he cocked his head at the mention of a mini meal. he muttered gruffly, "hmm...you have point. mini meal's tasty. you smell mini, you say?" he glanced around and sniffed at the air, catching a whiff of something - no, someone. "hmmm, maybe our lucky day. you want we go looksie 'round?" he grinned slightly for the first time that day. he was annoyed that his fishing was interrupted, but if they were successful at the new hunt, it would make up for it. plus, minis didn't have nearly as many tiny little bones to get stuck in your teeth...
suddenly, breakfast jumped in surprise. he heard high-pitched shouting coming from the opposite side of the creek. "wuzzat? izzat mini meal?" he squinted across the way; he could make out some streaks of bright blue, but couldn't tell who or what exactly it was making such a commotion. he elbowed snack, then motioned for his brother to follow. the burnt orange feral jumped into the creek and paddled through to the other side. after shaking most of the water from his fur, he padded over.
meanwhile...
the nervous mini was still huddled down, eyes closed tightly, until she heard a voice similar to hers. it was loud, and getting louder. she sat up and started turning to see who was heading towards her, when she felt a great *smack!* on her back. "waugh!" she yelped, falling flat on her face. she sat up gingerly, holding her snout with both paws, as tears of pain streamed down her lavender cheeks. "oooowwhhh" she moaned, gently pinching her injured nose closed to stop a mild nosebleed. "doe, i don'd know who dey are. i was going do see when you ran indo be..." she turned back to get another look at the two large strangers as saw that they were missing from their previous location on the bank of the creek. "uh-oh. did you see dem? did you see where dey wend?" she glanced anxiously around.

Snack nodded vigorously in reply, he knew the smell of a mini like he knew the scent of his brothers and sister. He was about to reply that looking around was exactly what he wanted them to do until he too heard the screaming. His ears perked up, he didn't think it was the mini he smelt but it was something. He was too interested in the commotion to be anything but surprised when he was elbowed in the chest.
He let out a half growl-half whine, as he rubbed the pad of a paw over his chest pretending to be wounded by the action. Not that it lasted long because Breakfast was already leaving and he was much too hungry to care about a mild pain that was already fading. He slunk after his brother, slipping into the water and swimming swiftly through the waves. He pulled himself up on the shore, shaking off the water and making his fur temporarily poof before it settled back down.
"Moor mini," he cooed as the scent of two small otters filled his nose. He grinned, eyes glow intensely. What luck, now they could each have their own mini meal!

breakfast glanced back to make sure that his brother was following, then proceeded to sidle up to the two minis. "huuuh, looksie snicky. two mini mea...uh, new friend. hi there, mini friend." he grinned widely (a little too widely...) while casting a sideways glance at the black otter next to him. now that he knew that his fishing wasn't interrupted for nothing, he thought he'd have some fun with the two. he did, however, want to be sure he could find them if they escaped. the orange feral circled the two smaller creatures, taking note of their blue and lavender fur and their scents. "say hi to new friend, snicky. dun be rude."

Ritz blinked in confusion at the other mini's muddled words. "You really shouldn't talk with your paws over your--" she cut herself off as a smell hit her senses. The deranged otter was coming closer. The glowing mini gasped loudly and grasped the other by her shoulders. "We've got to get help! It's coming!!!" she wailed fearfully before sporadically looking around for the saviors. Where did they go?!? Wait! They'd come across the stream in their direction!
"Oh look! They've come to us!! Oh glorious day!" she squeaked joyously, giving the other mini a nudge in the males' direction before dashing towards the burly orange specimen "My Savior!!" she squealed, latching to his leg before he could even react. "Oh bravest and noblest and most handsomest warrior. Won't you fend off the horrid beast that is on my trail?" she pleaded with doleful eyes peering up.

Following advice not to be rude, the feral opened his mouth to speak when his brother was on the receiving end of an over jubilant mini. His mind flashing back to another insane mini, he was about to grumble and grouch at it when he reaffirmed that it was talking to Breakfast. Well that was all right then.
"Lo, minis," he cooed making sure not to call them meals. In his experience live things didn't tend to react well to that. Or maybe he was simply a bit too over-enthusiastic and thus scary during those times. So far he was being rather calm about the whole thing though shots of excitement did shoot up his spine causing his tail to flick lazily back and forth.
It was as he was imagining their lovely mini meals that he realized that the blue one had said a beast was after it. Well that wouldn't be nice, he didn't want to share his mini meal. Even if the beast was horrid. "Who after you?" he questioned a bit fiercely.

breakfast stumbled back slightly as the overexcited mini grasped his leg. he restrained himself from growling at it - he couldn't have his upcoming meal running off quite yet. bravest and handsomest, it said? well, he couldn't disappoint now, could he? if he did something to protect them from the threat, they'd believe anything he said until he had the right opportunity to turn the tables. plus, he needed to protect his new "friends" from being eaten by someone else before he had the chance to. "yeah, wut snicky said. who coming? we'l take him, right snicky? two 'ganst one." he bared his teeth and flexed his claws, waiting for whatever the bright blue mini had said was following her to show itself.

"It's got claws l-like--" she stretched out her paws for emphasis. "-- a-a-and teeth like..." she brought a paw up to her mouth to preform an eccentric display of fangs. But before she could describe the spiteful otter any further, said beast bolted out from the bracken and skidded to a halt before the group. "THAT'S IT!" she shrieked before diving for cover behind her manly, orange, new companion, trying to beckon the other mini over.
---
The actual beast, which was merely a rather small, highly irritated female feral otter, stood tensely in front of the quartet. Finch was momentarily displaced at what she was looking at. The bizarre sight of a mini clinging to a feral's leg might have not have been all that strange... if it weren't for the fact that ferals were one of the rarest species in the reserve. It was uncommon to come across one, much less two at the same time. She kept a cautious stance and studied the two warily in case they were as prone to attacking as she was. "Wha en blahdy ell's name," she muttered around the lighter in her mouth before spitting it out to speak clearly. "--is this supposed to be?" she hissed, looking between the two males before settling on the orange, fixing him with a glowing, amber-eyed stare, tail flicking in contemplation. "Does this," the feral gestured to the blue mini with a flick of her maw. "insolent excuse for a pest belong to you?"

That wasn't a beast--at least Snack didn't think so. She actually looked kind of small and he couldn't help laughing a bit. The blue mini was scared of her? He snickered quietly before trying to show off a calm, neutral expression. It didn't really work. He was clearly amused. And the fact that she, like the minis, seemed more inclined to speak to Breakfast was just fine with him. It made it all the more amusing really, he was like a spectator.
A hungry spectator. One that really rather hoped she wasn't going to stick around. Unless she didn't mind getting short-changed. He wrinkled his nose, perhaps it wasn't so amusing.

the lavender mini gasped as yet another wild-looking otter appeared. where were all these new creatures coming from? she gazed at them with wide, bright eyes, then, still half in shock, followed the blue otter's frantic waves behind the big orange one. after a moment, when the newest arrival spat out the lighter, she couldn't help turning her attention to the item on the ground. it looked strange, but she couldn't help wanting to play with it and see what it did...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
oh, boy. two clingers-on, now? breakfast signed inwardly. the lengths he went to for a decent meal.
he looked across the way at the creature that the blue mini pointed to. this is who his new plaything was so worried about? he snorted in a half-laugh. she was definitely a feral like his parents and siblings - odd to see another one, since he always thought of his family as the only ones on the reserve - but this one was a bit runtier. and she sounded funny. he frowned as she talked, trying to understand what she said. insolent? bloody? well, he knew what blood was, but there wasn't any on the mini... "b'long to me? nuh uh...dun have mini friend 'cepts for now. jus' met, jus' now. 'n dun try to hurt 'em or you get hurt by me 'n snicky here." he said as he bared his teeth ever so slightly at her and narrowed his smoky grey eyes.
Ritz clung to Breakfast's flank, whimpering slightly and looking up at him with big doe-eyes. "Oh my lovely and handsome warrior, you will chase this creature of foul repute away, right??" she pleaded, grasping onto his fur for dear life, as though the small beast might snatch her up if she were to let go.
"Just met?" she scoffed. "Well if you don't mind, I'm going to have that luminous blue rat become better acquainted with the inside of my mouth." Now that winter was but a fox's-leap away, much of the smaller animals were taking refuge in their hibernation abodes. So letting a decent wad of food like this get away was out of the question. Finch snorted at the orange feral's threat. "Is that so..." she sneered, glancing over to the black male for confirmation, as it seemed he appeared hardly interested in acting anytime soon. "...Snicky?" The converted feral had thwarted bobcats for morsels smaller than these minis. Naturally, the idea of another otter of her kind being able to intimidate her away from her meal was a laughable notion, at best. "As riveting as your twisted fetishes concerning polygamy with these little pieces of meat are..." the riled otter muttered blandly. "It seems you lot already got your own purple twerp to do with as you please. Now quit acting like a half-baked, unconscionable ninny and kick over my lunch." the female growled, clawing at the lighter on the ground, which began spitting out small sparks, unbeknowest to her.
"Did you hear that?" the mini gasped horrifically. "She wishes to devour me!!! Can you believe such a horrid thought? Oh dearest hero, you'll protect me from this wretchedness, won't you??"
Finch nearly gagged at the overly-exaggerated swooning from the male's girlfriend. God, how she wanted to shut that thing up.
