The brown haired man made his way through the doors, one tan hand tousling an obviously bad case of bedhead. Or, in his case, barber-chair- hair. Mateo had just left from his hair salon/barber shop, and from the looks of it, he'd just woke up. Eh, his customers were used to his slacking and laziness; it was a wonder his business stayed afloat. The man stood near the entrance, looking around a moment before making his way to the front desk. Looked like some kind of lab of sorts....cool. What did they want with him again? He'd failed Chemistry, Physics, and pretty much every other science course he'd ever been in.
"Um, you guys wanted to see me?" the man murmured, stifling a yawn with one hand as he held out the letter that summoned him here with the other. On a normal occaision, he'd be worried. But, right now, he was protected by a warm, sleepy sense of security.

Kayen's voice was calm and smooth as she spoke from the desk. "Yes. You were selected to become the parent to a small child." she stated curtly, her long pink hair brushed neatly back form her shoulders as she looked up, face hidden behind a visor.
The woman was pale and thin, with plain features - well, those that were visible anyway - and a manner that stated she wasn't one to be ******** with. Her clothes were a plain gray jumpsuit and she looked very stern as she seemed to size the young man up under his visor.

Some of the drowsiness seeped out of the man's expression. "Wait wait wait. You want ME to be a parent?" the brunnete asked, nervously running a hand through his hair. "Ma'am, there must be some mistake. I'm not prepared for taking care of a kid or nothing." He offered an awkward smile and shrug, one hand still in his hair. "Are you sure you've got the right Mateo?" It was hard to tell whether he was was trying to convince Kayen or convince himself.

"Yes. You were selected." Kayen repeated smoothly. "And yes I do. I am never wrong about those sorts of things."
Standing, she closed the book on her desk and looked sternly at the man through her visor. "Do you wish me to select one or will you pick out the child?"

Well, holy hell. Looks like he was gonna be a father. Damn, and he hadn't even been taken out to dinner first. "Well, if you're sure...." he said, smiling awkwardly. Oh, this wasn't an uncomfortable situation at all! Nope, not one bit.
The man paused, thinking a moment. "Well, I'd like to have a little girl, if at all possible. Other than that, ma'am, I think I'll trust your judgment." he said, slipping his hands into his pockets and nodding. This all felt so surreal.....him, a parent?

Kayen nodded and waited for his answers, "I don't recommend that but I will return in a moment." trusting Kayen's judgment of what was an "acceptable" little girl was very different from what most would think. She generally was VERY accepting about some things.
Shortly she returned with....holy crap what was that? It was walking on it's hands for chrissakes! "Sorry, she ended up a little messy scraping her underside playing outside." the girl said, pointing to the minor bloodstains on her outfit, "but she's a good girl."

Why wouldn't she recommend that? Eh, Mateo figured it was nothing to worry about. After all, how bad could it- "Oh my ******** god, what the hell is that thing?!?!" the man exclaimed in fright, recoiling back from the creepy girl-child...thing. He thought he was getting a child, not some monster thing!
Rosamund immediately cringed at the loud noise, eyes widening and lip quivering before she let out an ungodly loud wail of a cry. Scary loud man was scary! The girl scuttled and stumbled, ducking behind Kayen to hide from the big mean scary.

Immediately, from the lab area came a woman with large floofy brown hair and big glasses, rushing out to scoop the little monster up into her arms. "Awwwww, baby, don't cry." she cooed, holding her around her strange torso and coddling the weird thing.
Glaring at Mateo from behind her glasses, she marched over and smacked him across the face. "How dare you use such language about a child? Just because she's different doesn't mean she doesn't deserve love and caring as much as any other little girl. How would you feel if everyone mistreated you for how YOU look?" she said coldly, poking him in the chest with each word. For a tiny little woman with an upturned nose and freckly cheeks, Apoxi looked downright scary right about now, cuddling the freaky girl to her like she was the most precious little thing.

The little blonde-haired thing clung to Apoxi, sniffling and burying her face in the woman's shoulder. "Scawweh!" she sniffled, her night-dark eyes squeezing shut as she clung to the adult. She didn't want to go with scary man! He was scary!
Mateo stood there in a stunned silence, his hand sliding out of his hair and moving to his stinging, rosy-tinged cheek. Wait, wait, wait, this was the kid he was supposed to take home? "I...um....I'm sorry, miss?" he started out, his tone awkward and apologetic. "I, er...I didn't say she didn't deserve love and care and stuff, she, ah....she just took me by surprise, that's all." The man took a step back away from scary-psycho-lady and her pokes. "I, um...I...I'll still take care of her and all that jazz. She just, ah....I'm not used to...well, you see... I'm just going to stop talking now."

Apoxi gave him a dirty look, "Yes, it's best that you do. You're scaring Rosie. She's delicate and doesn't take well to loud strangers." she explained, petting the little girl's hair and bouncing her a bit more. It was strange seeing a toddler with such humongous gangly arms wrapped around a little woman with that kind of expression. "She's a good girl and a sweetheart."

Well, now that Mateo felt like a kid being scolded by the teacher.... The man shifted awkwardly. Okay, he needed to look on the positive...this kid may scare the crap out of him, but she obviously wasn't that bad. And it looked like she was more scared of him than he was of her. He felt like an a** now; poor little fella. "Um...is it alright if I hold her?" he asked, holding his arms out to receive the little girl-child-thing.
Rosamund flinched away from the man, peering at him from behind the safety of her hair. She then looked up at Apoxi, wide eyes silently asking if the man was okay and safe and not a scary. He was being quieter now...but that didn't mean he wasn't still a scary. It just meant he could be being a quiet scary. And quiet scaries were worse than loud scaries; at least you could hear loud scaries coming.

Given that he was behaving more like an awkwardly scolded child and not an a*****e still, Apoxi decided to give him the chance to redeem himself with the girl. She nodded down at Rosamund before holding her out to Mateo and helping him to get a grip on the girl. "Just be careful with her."

"I will be, ma'am." the hairstylist said, taking the little one into his arms carefully, albeit a bit awkwardly. His experience with children? None, and that was blatantly obvious. But hey, he was trying. "Hey there, kiddo..." he greeted quietly, forcing a small smile as the large arms weighed down at him.
Rosamund looked between the the two adults, leaning cautiously around the one that held her. This wasn't so bad...maybe this guy was alright. Maybe.
Mateo looked back up at Apoxi, clearing his throat a little. "Is there anything else I should know about her?" he asked, keeping his tone even.

"She's easily frightened and rather delicate, and due to obvious reasons, has some special needs. You'll need to be very patient and gentle with her. She has to be brought back to the labs once per stage for observation - you'll be allowed to drop her off for the day and come back later." Apoxi explained and tenderly pet Rosamund's hair for a moment before backing off some.
"We'll also provide monetary assistance if that's required at any point." Kayen added in, voice still somber and humorless, though she had a small, amused look on her features. Apoxi could get so attached.
