A pool of comforting light, buzzed and flickered above her and the small scrap of paper she was holding russled in the wind. Her dirt brown hair fussed in the breeze, which tugged at the baggy jeans and sweatshirt she was wearing, and the bag which hung familiarly at her side. Admittedly, she looked very much American, which tended not to blend in very well in Japan.

She pouted at the peice of paper. She was to follow it's instructions exactly and without fail. However, all it had managed to do in the past 30 minutes was lead her in circles. Then agian, she couldn't be sure she was even turning in the right places, walking for the correct distances, or anything else it had implored of her.

Where am I?

She let it go and read the next direction. There will be a bridge where you are to meet your escort, Akina Mizushima. She should be under the bridge. Be sure there is no one following you. Low and behold, there was actually a bridge there! Which meant that she probably got the directions right.

After she looked around and saw that there was no one around, she approached the bridge. There she saw a girl of about her age. "Hi there!" She said as quietly as her excitement would manage. "You must be Akina. My name is Erica Strayden. It's nice to meet you!"

Who's bright idea had it been to send Katherine Richney to Japan of all places?

Somewhere in Europe would be understandable, as she was fluent in both Spanish and French.

Even America would've been a better option, though she personally considered it a bit on the wilder side there.

But, of course, they had to send their only expert Fire Gatekeeper to the one place where she would be completely and utterly left out.

Maybe she was being a tad dramatic about it. I mean, who knows? Give it a few weeks, a month even, and she'd hopefully be sprouting Japanese as easily as she did English. Somehow, though, Kate doubted it. She'd never been one of those in your face people, and not speaking the native language was not bound to make it any better. If she was lucky, they'd realize that Japan was perfectly fine without a fire expert and send her back.

She was very quick to forget it's location to the Ring of Fire, wasn't she?

Still, she wasn't going to be doing much of anything until she found where her guide was. Trudging along through the chilly night air, Kate absentmindedly tucked a chestnut strand behind her ear before spotting a bridge up ahead. A sigh of relief left her body as she increased her pace, eyeing the dark alleys around the area with dislike. She understood the need for a secure meeting place, but she didn't know what was wrong with doing it during the day.

Who knew what could be wandering around the alleys at this hour?

None the less, Kate continued her path until she found herself underneath the bridge, eyeing two girls suspiciously. If the first one's reaction was anything to go on, she was stuck with over-energetic peppy people. Not exactly the kind she got along with it, but she doubted they'd even understand a word she said.

Anyways, nodding was so much easier than botching up her guide's native language.

"Katherine Richney."

In the end, her name would hopefully be all she had to say.

I need to simmer-down. Erica thought to herself. I mean sure I'm only in another country for the first time in my life, but that's no reason to let excitement get the better of me.

She took a deep breath, the cold air biting at her insides, watching as the other two arrived. Letting the breath leave her, she watched as it formed fog and carried away some of her excess energy she had built up. She was taken surprise by Akina's clairity of speech, figuring that she could have just as easily been American rather than Japanese.

"So... I know that I'm American, and Akina is Japanese." She started, speaking far more calmly, and pleasantly. "By your accent, I'm guessing that you're from England." She said turning to Katherine. "But," She asked, speaking to the boy this time. "Where might you happen to be from? I can't say I'm familiar with your accent."
