Sarah's Story

User Image

" Mum, here are the eggs I collected," Sarah said as she made her way across the kitchen. Placing the eggs on a table the fourteen year old turned around to face her mother. " Can I have my breakfast on the hills again today? The weather's way too nice to stay indoors. Besides today is a holiday so I do not have to get ready for school. Please say yes,"

"Oh all right," Sarah's mother replied smilling as she kneaded the dough on the kitchen's table. " There's bread and cheese in the larder and you may fry yourself some bacon if you want. Just be careful now okay? The hills might be slippery after last night's rain,"

"Thanks mum," Sarah said giving her mother a hug before running off to pack her breakfast. Along the way she took an oportunity to ruffle her younger brother's hair as he had just got out of bed. " See you later sleepy head and bye mum," Sarah called out as she made her way towards the hills.

Climbing up the hills with her backpack containing her breakfast Sarah whistled joyfully. She always felt happy whenever she was given permission to hang out on the hills. She loved the scenery, the fresh air and most of all, the sight of birds flying gracefully as they search for food.

Finding a dry spot high up along the rocky lanes that were made to help people get through the hills Sarah promptly sat down and began to unpack her breakfast. Good it was still warm. Taking a bite out of her bread Sarah happily watched the birds as they flew along the hill's valley in search for food. It would be so cool to be able to fly like that Sarah thought as she observed an eagle swooping down tawards a nearby stream as it spotted a fish. Somewhere in the distance the familiar rumble of thunder could be heard...

"Uh oh," Sarah commented as the thundering grew louder. "I guess I should be heading home soon before mum gets too worried,". Saying so, the little girl hurriedly packed away her half eaten breakfast and made her way down the hill side. As she jogged down the narrow road a wild rabbit suddenly ran across her path. Startled Sarah took a step back and slipped on a surface of loose pebbles. Losing her balance the teenager tried to grab onto a nearby branch but failed. As she was falling, the last thing that Sarah saw was the outline of a falcon flying overhead.

The Encounter

User Image

It's so dark here....am I blind? was the first thought that came into Sarah's mind as the sensation of falling left her. What took it's place instead was the feeling that she was somehow floating on air. Looking about Sarah could seen nor hear nothing for miles.

Suddenly a voice spoke out. " Are you willing to die now little girl?" the voice asked through the darkness giving Sarah a mild shock. "Die? No way. I-I've got so many things to accomplish!" Sarah said looking around for the source of the voice. "Besides if I go, my brother, my mother and my father will miss me!,"

"I'm afraid that that can't be helped," the voice replied. " You are beyond hope of ever returning to them," " W-what do you mean?" Sarah asked he voice trembling in fear and confusion "Why can't I return to them?"
"You do remember that you fell off the hill side right?" the voice asked.
"Yes," Sarah said nodding in no particular direction. "Well, to put it mildly you died because of the fall,"

"What?!" Sarah yelled unable to accept this new piece of information. "T-then why aren't I in heaven or something?" Sarah asked her voice chocked with emotion. " Because you weren't prepared for it," came the reply.

"No way...," Sarah whispered to no one in particular. This was too weird.
"However,"the voice continued "I am able to give you a chance to see the world again though it may be from another dimension.
"What do you mean?" Sarah asked cautiously. " What other dimension?"
"You will be sent over to act as a guardian spirit to a child of great potential. Along with others similiar like you these children might just change the fate of their world. So do you accept this task little one?"

"Looks like I do not have a choice do I?" Sarah asked in a small voice. " B-but how will I know if I like the child entrused to me?"

"Don't worry, you'll have to," the voice chuckled before everything went black once more......

Falco's Story

User ImageThe area was silent as if devoid of life. Little swirls of dust and leaves silently blew past the empty landscape giving the area a sense of eeriness. On the ground unaffected by the winds however lay a single feather glowing slightly as if alive. Then suddenly as if a signal has been given the feather glowed even more strongly ; it's brighteness becoming darker and lighter as if in rythm to a heartbeat. Slowly little swirls of wind could almost be seen encircling the feather; lifting it up from the ground. Faraway the leaves on trees shook as the wind seemed to take on a life of its own and its target being the lone feather glowing in the air.

Then as suddenly as it started; it stopped and on the ground where the feather had been moments ago a tiny figure lay chirping softly to itself. If chirping could describe what the tiny figure was making. It was more to what Sarah would later describe as a mixture between chirps and gurgles.
Opening its eyes for the first time the small creature looked about; its golden eyes carefully taking in its surroundings. Suddenly a voice spoke out and the tiny figure immediately flared its wings as if in defense.

"Hey, steady the little fellow. I mean you no harm," the voice said in a friendly tone and suddenly the tiny figure felt warmth spreading through its body; almost as if a blanket has been placed over it. Cooing in delight the tiny figure nestled amongst the grass while flapping its wings gently.

"Who are you?" the little child-like figure asked as it opened its eyes once again." Are you ...my mummy?" Immediately after saying that the tiny figure could feel the presence of the being that had spoken to it withdraw and a sudden gush of sadness seemed to overwhelm it. "S-sorry...I shouldn't have asked...," the child said sensing the being's distress.

"No, it's...alright. I-I was being too emotional," the being replied. " And I'm afraid to say, I'm not your mother,"

"Oh," the child replied looking up towards where he deemed the voice came from. " You do not sound old enough to be my mother anyway," the child continued in a lighter tone as if in jest and he too could feel the being's emotion lightened as if it too were laughing. "You are really straight forward aren't you?" the voice continued in amusement. " Eventhough I'm not your mum, I'm what some would call a guardian spirit,"

"Really?" the child asked in awe at the thought of having a guardian spirit. "Please to meet you then miss Spirit,"
"Call me Sarah,"the spirit replied chuckling. "And please to meet you too. How would the name Falco Eis sound to you young one?"
"It sounds fine," Falco replied beaming.

After a while...
"...what do we do now Sarah?"
"We'll get you something to cover up,"
"Coverup?"
"You're naked Falco...,"
"Oh.....,"

User Image Feeding Time

It was roughly two days since the pair first met and now Falco was feeling rather hungry. But thinking that it would be polite to wait up for his guardian to be hungry too Falcon just kept quiet and hoped that Sarah would soon feel the need to feed. Unfortunately being a ghost Sarah wasn't aware of Falco's thoughts and observed the little Zahdl worriedly. "Is something wrong Falco? You do not seem to have the same energy as you did two days ago,"

"I-I'm alright Sarah," Falco replied wincing as his stomach suddenly gave a loud growl.Thankfully the growl was loud enough for Sarah to hear it too.

"Omigosh! Falco! I've just realised that you haven't eaten since we met! Aren't you hungry?" Sarah asked worriedly looking at the little zahdl.

"Umm..a little," Falco replied before his stomach gave another growl of hunger. " But I thought it would be better for us to eat together...,"

" Oh noooo!" Sarah moaned rather guiltily as she 'petted' his head. " I should have told you that by being a ghost I can't eat. But enough of that! We must find you some nourishment before you *ulp* die of hunger," Sarah replied with a slightly hysterical note to it. Looking around Sarah spotted a small tree with some fruits in it. "Let's try that tree over there!" Sarah said as she tried bear with the overwhelming guilt that was rapidly washing over her.

Falco nodded and feebly made his way towards the said tree. Plucking a reddish coloured fruit Falco was just about to eat it when Sarah stopped him " Listen Falco, though I was careless just now I'm not going to take the risk of you being poisoned too," Sarah said as she observed the tree with its red fruits.

"Then what should I do?"Falco asked as he stared longingly at the fruit in his hand. "Can't I take just a tiny bite?". Hearing those words Sarah nearly tore herself in two with guilt. " Of course you can Falco but you must be patient. Rub a little of the fruit's juice onto your arm and wait for an hour. If the fruit is poisonous, your arm should have an allergy reaction by then," Sarah replied glad to put her survival skills to use. "O-okay," Falco said reluctantly rubbing the red coloured fruit against his arm. The smell of the juice was almost too much to bear for the little Zahdl as he waited impatiently for the time to pass. After an hour there were still no signs of an allergy on Falco's arm and the little child bit into the fruit hungrily.

"I am really sorry Falco...I just forgot...," Sarah replied in a small voice as she watched Falco devour one fruit after another with gusto. " I should be more responsible next time...,"

"No harm done Sarah. Look! Now the fruit tastes so much better compared to if I ate it earlier," Falco replied trying to cheer his depressed guardian up. " Hunger makes one appreciate the food they have you know,"

"Oh Falco...," said Sarah stung by the zahdl's words. If she had arms she would have hugged the little guy then and there. I promise I'll be much better next time. I promise....

Falco's Thoughts.

Though I can't say I know much, I sometimes get the feeling that Sarah is hiding something sad from me. She sometimes seems to ponder over stuff that I don't understand and tries her best to teach me what she knows about the world. I shall try my best for her too!

P.S: Sarah and I now have a mutual understanding. When I'm hungry I eat regardless if Sarah ask me to or not.

Sarah's Thoughts.

Being sent to another dimension as a ghost to escape death still feels strange to me. Not that I'm complaining. Anything would be better than being stuck in that dark empty space. Besides, the longer I stay with Falco, the more I've come to love the little guy. He reminds me of my little brother back home and knows just what to say and at the right time too! I shall do my best to protect him at all cost!

P.S: Falco and I have now made a deal. Whenever he has the slightest pangs of hunger we'll go right off to find food. Can't risk having him go through the same situation as before!

Nature Study.

User Image

"Sarah! Let's do something fun. Alphabets are boring," Falco whined as Sarah used a bit of her wind energy( it was apleasant suprise for her when she found out that she was able to play around with the wind a bit)to scribble some alphabets onto the ground. "No Falco, you need to enhance your mental as well as your physical strength as well," Sarah said firmly. "But we've been at it for hours...plus it is such a wonderful day," Falco replied gazing longingly at the plains that surrounded them.

Sarah smiled inwardly at Falco's statement and sighed. She suppose that Falco did have a point. After all he was still a young child. "Okay then Falco, we'll leave off learning alphabets for the time being,"
"Yay!" Falco said flapping his wings in delight. "No more studying for today!"
"I did not say that," Sarah replied with a laugh. "You'll be having Nature Study now,"
"Nature Study? Oh...," Falco said his wings drooping a little. He was hoping that he would be able to have a quick run in the fields.

"Don't worry. I think you'll find this more to your liking Falco," Sarah said ruffling his head. Soon, just as Sarah had predicted Falco was imersed with the subject.

"Why is the grass green? Why does the grass grow longer near the water's edge?
Why...,"

"Woah, steady there. One question at a time please," Sarah replied giggling. She was really glad that all those stuff she had learnt at school were finally paying off." Okay, here's why the grass is green. It's because...,"

Falco's Thoughts.

Wow, Nature Study sure is an interesting subject. It helps me understand what's going on around me and Sarah seems to know alot about it too. Too bad I can't say the same for alphabets. I just don't see the point in learning it though Sarah claims that it'll enable me to use a skill called reading. She said that it was a combination of words that were formed from letters from the alphabets.

Sarah's Thoughts.

Teaching Falco was interesting. This guy learns his stuff fast but he prefers learning about nature to learning about the alphabets. Oh well, I suppose we all have our preferance to certain things.

Instinct

" Would you look at that Falco, a butterfly is emerging from its cocoon!" Sarah said directing her field of vision towards the said butterfly. Falco too turned his head towards the butterfly's direction and nodded. "Pretty,"he said reaching out his hand to touch it. But sensing Falco's presence however made the butterfly take off.

"He flew away....," Falco said looking at the butterfly fluttering in the sky. "Why did he do that Sarah?"

"Well, it could because of its instinct to take flight when it senses a threat...," Sarah said cautiously not wanting Falco to feel sad that he was the said threat but instead Falco nodded his head gravely in agreement. " It is smart. I want to be smart like that too,"

Remembring how Falco flared his wings on their first meeting Sarah chuckled." That, Falco I believe shouldn't be a problem to you,"

Falco's thoughts

It's been quite sometime since I've met Sarah and I've learnt a lot from her. She said that even my reading skills have improved though I'm not too sure about it. I still prefer learning things that are useful to me now and not something that might prove to be useful to me later...

Sarah's thoughts

Falco is learning fast though he does learn his alphabets rather reluctantly. I wish that there would be a situation where reading is required so that Falco will finally understand how important it is to be able to read. Till then perhaps I'll try mixing spelling and nature study together...
