 Ailbhe had wandered far from home in the middle of the afternoon. It was late fall, and Ailbhe was still too young to know that that meant that the days were getting very short, and night wasn't a good time to be out and about. However, Ailbhe was as curious as the father who had decided to secretly periodically visit her and her two older siblings. Ailbhe smiled as she trotted through the dried grasses and fallen leaves of the hills, her long feline tail swishing and her keen feline ears pricked for trouble. If one disregarded her long fangs, she could have passed for an angel of a mutant kitten Soquili, with a deep golden mane and deep sapphire eyes. Her voice was sweet, too, as she sang what little she could remember so far of a song she'd heard somewhere today.
I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen:
Of meadow flowers and butterflies in summers that have been,
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were,
With morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see,
For still there are so many things that I have never seen:
In every rock, in every tree, there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago
And people who will see a world that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet and voices at the door.
There. She'd memorized it. But what to sing next? Well...there was her great experiment. How did things react to her fangs? Some things bled this red stuff that kind of tasted interesting. Other stuff gave off this sweet liquid she'd been told was juice. Hmmm. She could test the flowers....
She reached down to chomp on a flower petal without any real intent on eating it, unaware of how bizarre she must look.

Black Prince walked, squinting in the sunlight. His sensitive eyes could see better at night but he had a hard time sleeping during the day. That made him surly. Being abandoned by his mother also made him surly, though his mind didn't quite realize that abandonment was what had happened. It was still a big game. Waiting in the swamp kingdom for their royal father to find him and his brother. It would happen. He believed that.
He browsed idly as he walked but without much enthusiasm. The leaves had a tendency to become caught between his fangs and that annoyed him. It had just happened again and he contorted his face in attempt to wiggle it out. It was like this, with his mouth hanging open and his long tongue coiled up that he met eyes with the filly. Quickly he composed himself and straightened up to stare at her haughtily.
"What are you doing heeeere?" his voice came out in a serpentine hiss. It was hard to talk normally with his tongue.

Ailbhe looked up, startled by the voice hissing out along a serpentine tongue. She hadn't let the flower petal go, so accidentally swallowed it unchewed, causing her to cough it up. Embarrassed, she looked up at a handsome dark colt with bizarre eyes, long fangs like hers, a long tongue, and a single horn extending from his forehead. Being one of three mutant children with a mutant father was a good way to have the terror of mutants voided at an early age, so she smiled without fear or apprehension, her fangs showing only by dint of their size.
"I'm exploring and doing experiments," she explained cheerfully. "Are you also exploring, or is this your home?" It was proper to greet him properly if this was home. Besides, it was probably not a good idea to run experiments on your host, even if he looked like a good candidate. Deep down inside, though, Ailbhe was starting to shift him toward the mental category of Not to be Bitten Because He's Nice.

Black Prince stared at the filly. He hadn't met a wide variety of soquili yet so didn't have a large idea of what was normal or not. His brother had a tail that was a little like hers but without the fur. He had long teeth like her. It was only her ears that he couldn't match up to a member of his family. She was so brightly colored. He squinted a little while looking at her. He didn't like the way the sun reflected off her pale coat. He scowled.
"Nooooo," he muttered hissingly in response. "Thissss is not my hooome. I live in the ssssswamp. Don't be ssssstupid." He was already getting tired of this filly... but he didn't really have anything else better to do, either.

Ail cocked her head. "I don't know where everyone normally lives, so you living in the swamp wasn't obvious to me." She shifted into a patch of shade, since it looked like he was squinting. Maybe he couldn't see her well because the light was bright. Maybe his home was darker than this.
"I've never been in a swamp. What's it like?" she asked, ever the curious feline foal.

He still didn't like her any more than he had. He watched her with an unfriendly and mistrustful glare. Still, he followed her into the shade. His gaze immediately became less squinted and he was grateful for the lack of sun beating down on his black fur. He could get hot standing in the sun even on cold days. It wasn't pleasant.
"It'sss like.... Many animalsss. Much water." He tried to think of something else to add. "Don't go there. It is our kingdom."

Ail hadn't seen much water, but something feline about her made her not happy about going somewhere where there was a lot of water. "Don't worry," she assured him, "I won't go there." She shivered a little. "Some like water, but I don't know if I'd want to live somewhere where there's a lot of water everywhere. It's probably very nice and very homelike for some, but probably not me," she added, not wanting to make him feel bad about his home.

Black Prince regarded her disdainfully. To him, not liking the swamp was a sign of some shortcoming in a soquili. The swamp was a wonderful place. It was full of interesting creatures and tasty plants. Where else could you find the tender shoots of cattails or hear the serenade of frogs?
"That'ssss a dumb thing to ssssay," he hissed at her. "Maybe you don't like the sssswamp becausse you would sssink and drown." He smirked smugly with the thought. That was right. Not everyone was smart enough to live in the swamp like he and his brother were.
